South Yorkshire PC famed for bike chase named officer of the year

BBC News28-07-2025
A police constable who caught a car thief after swapping his patrol car for a passer-by's bike has been named South Yorkshire's Officer of the Year. Footage of PC Paddy Connell chasing a man who had stolen a Range Rover Evoque in Rotherham was shared widely on social media in April last year. After the Range Rover crashed, the suspect ran off and a member of the public offered PC Connell his bike, allowing him to continue the chase and arrest the suspect. PC Connell, from the Roads Proactive Policing Team, also arrested a man who South Yorkshire Police said was their "most wanted burglar" after a pursuit in January this year.
Deployed stinger
During that incident PC Connell spotted a Suzuki Cross 4x4 in Penistone which failed to stop and resulted in a chase lasting almost half an hour. During the pursuit, which went in and out of West Yorkshire, the suspect threw items - including a fire extinguisher - from the car. PC Connell deployed a stinger just before a roundabout at junction 37 of the M1 as the suspect attempted to get onto the southbound carriageway of the motorway. He managed to take the vehicle off the road before it reached the motorway and both men inside were detained, including the "most wanted" who is now facing a prison sentence.
In what South Yorkshire Police called a "strange" pursuit last April, PC Connell asked a suspect in a Range Rover to stop on Dalton Lane but instead the driver reversed down several roads, driving at 80mph in a 30mph area before crashing. The suspect got out of the car and ran off, with the officer in hot pursuit - and an observer offered him his bike. The 25-year-old suspect was eventually arrested in a garden on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle.
Chief Inspector of Roads Policing Peter Spratt said: "We are immensely proud of PC Connell and the recognition he has received."He is an integral member of the team and has had so many excellent results with colleagues, bringing offenders to justice and making South Yorkshire safer as a result."He added: "Our officers regularly put themselves at risk to protect the public, managing these incidents to a safe conclusion through tactics that require dynamic teamwork and skilful implementation of their training. "Well done PC Connell, you are a credit to the department."

Man who was ‘fixated' with Anna Friel ordered not to contact her before sentence

A man who was 'fixated' with actress Anna Friel and stalked her for nearly three years has been ordered by a judge not to contact her ahead of his sentencing next month. Phil Appleton, 71, sent numerous messages, visited the actress's home address on several occasions and left 'unwanted' gifts between January 1 2022 and December 11 2024, Reading Crown Court previously heard. Appleton, of Windsor in Berkshire, pleaded guilty to a stalking offence under Section 2A of the Protection from Harassment Act 1997 earlier this week. He was due to be sentenced on Thursday but judge Alan Blake adjourned the hearing until September 18 for a pre-sentence report to be carried out. The court heard that a psychiatrist had diagnosed Appleton with bipolar disorder and erotomania, where a person believes that someone else is in love with them. The psychiatrist said that Appleton had a 'fixation' with Friel and was trying to determine whether this was still the case, the court heard. The defendant, who the court heard has been in custody for six months and has spent time in a mental health facility, was granted conditional bail. Appleton must not contact Friel or enter the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, and is to co-operate with those conducting the pre-sentence report. A website under his name appears to suggest that he is an actor and retired pilot. Friel, 49, rose to fame with her role as Beth Jordache in Channel 4 soap opera Brookside. She achieved international renown in 2007 starring as Charlotte 'Chuck' Charles in ABC comedy series Pushing Daisies. In 2017, she won the International Emmy for Best Actress for her role as the title character in the ITV and Netflix mystery drama series Marcella.

Teacher banned from the classroom after doing student's coursework for them

A teacher who wrote and submitted a student 's coursework for them has been banned from the classroom indefinitely. Lauren Oliver, 35, taught health and social care at Oasis Academy Shirley Park for 12 years, but in June 2023 it was discovered she rewrote a student's coursework and sent it to the exam board in November 2022. A panel found the teacher was 'guilty of unacceptable professional conduct' and was 'dishonest' and 'lacked integrity'. She has been banned from teaching indefinitely, with the right to have the prohibition order reviewed in two years. On 21 June 2023, the principal of the school was approached by a student who informed them Ms Oliver wrote their coursework five months earlier, a report revealed. Ms Oliver had advised the student that her work was due to be sampled for moderation by the exam board and that she would instead write the work and submit it on her behalf. The coursework that was submitted on behalf of the student was different to what they had originally produced, the report added. Ms Oliver resigned on 20 October 2023, after admitting to her actions. The report highlights Ms Oliver's actions meant the student temporarily received a better grade than they otherwise would have attained. Her actions may also have affected the student's overall grade because their work could have been disregarded. Ms Oliver had over a decade of teaching experience and was one of the lead internal verifiers at the school – meaning she was responsible for confirming to the exam board that the coursework was authentic. Considering this the panel decided Ms Oliver was aware that completing a students work on their behalf and attributing it to them was 'wrong'. The panel found Ms Oliver 'behaved in a dishonest manner' and concluded her 'conduct was capable of causing reputational damage to the school and her colleagues.' She was found to not uphold the professional and ethical standards expected of a teacher. 'Ms Oliver was in a position of trust and responsibility. Therefore, honesty and integrity were integral to her role. Notwithstanding this, Ms Oliver behaved in a dishonest manner,' the panel said. The former teacher is now banned from the classroom and cannot teach in any school, sixth form college, relevant youth accommodation or children's home in England.

Why staff at this zoo are receiving death threats

Tiergarten Nuremberg Zoo in Germany euthanised 12 Guinea baboons on 29 July due to severe overcrowding in their enclosure. The culled baboons were either used for scientific research or fed to carnivores, including lions, at the zoo. Zoo staff have since received death threats and insults, prompting a police investigation into the abuse. The zoo director stated that previous attempts to rehome the animals or use contraception had failed, and the overcrowding led to aggression among the baboons. The decision sparked outrage from animal rights activists, who protested the cull and plan to file a criminal complaint. Zoo staff receive death threats after baboons culled and fed to lions
