Kelsey Mitchell hit seven 3-pointers and scored 35 points, and the Indiana Fever defeated the Chicago Sky 93–78 in a marquee matchup on Sunday that was missing stars Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. Clark missed her fourth-straight game for Indiana with a groin injury and has only played in half of the teams' games, and Reese was out for her second-straight for the Sky with a back issue. Aliyah Boston had 14 points, 11 rebounds, and six assists for the Fever (14-12), who have three double-figure wins over Chicago this season. Makayla Timpson had 14 points off the bench, and Aari McDonald added 10. Mitchell had her 100th career 20-point game, second in franchise history behind Tamika Catchings, and her ninth 30-point game. She also picked up her 200th career steal, and the Fever turned 23 turnovers into 31 points.
Rachel Banham had six 3s and 26 points for the Sky (7-18). Kia Nurse added 14 points, Rebecca Allen 13, and Kamilla Cardoso 12 with 12 rebounds. The Fever had a 16 point lead early in the fourth quarter, cut to six with less than five minutes to go, but Mitchell responded with a 3-pointer and a couple of free throws to end the threat. Indiana closed out the first quarter on an 18–2 run to lead 26–13. Mitchell had 13 points, and the Fever had 14 points off nine Chicago turnovers. The lead reached 16 points in the second quarter before the half ended at 51–39. Chicago got off to a quick start in the third quarter, pulling within 56–55 at the midway point on consecutive jumpers by Nurse. Mitchell responded with a 3 and a layup before consecutive baskets by Timpson pushed the lead to 65–55. Lexie Hulls' buzzer beater made it 75–61 entering the fourth quarter.

Mets slugger Juan Soto out of lineup a day after fouling a ball off his left foot

Mets slugger Juan Soto wasn't in New York's lineup on Wednesday for a series finale against the San Diego Padres after fouling a ball off the top of his left foot a night earlier. Manager Carlos Mendoza said Soto was better but still sore. 'Getting treatment. We'll see where we're at. He hasn't done anything. He's in the training room. Hopefully he gets in the cages and see if he's available or not for the game. A little bit better.' Jeff McNeil was in the lineup in right field as the NL East-leading Mets tried to avoid being swept. The team announced that Soto had a bruised foot and that X-rays were negative. Soto appeared to be in considerable pain after fouling a ball off his foot in the fourth inning of a 7-1 loss. He hopped down the first base line on his right foot and then crouched down. He was checked by an athletic trainer, took a few swings, and then finished his at-bat grounding out to second baseman Jake Cronenworth, who made a nice diving stop. Soto was then lifted from the game. He's hitting .248 with 25 homers and 62 RBIs. Soto joined the Mets in December when he signed the biggest contract in baseball history–a 765 million 15-year deal.

Angels acquire relievers Chafin and García from Nationals in trade for lefty Eder, prospect Brown

The Los Angeles Angels have acquired relievers Andrew Chafin and Luis García from the Washington Nationals in a trade for left-hander Jake Eder and minor league first baseman Sam Brown. The Angels announced the deal to bolster their bullpen on Wednesday. Los Angeles also designated left-hander José Quijada for assignment to make room on its 40-man roster. The 35-year-old Chafin joins his eighth major league team after going 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 26 appearances for Washington this season. Left-handed hitters are batting just .147 against him. The 38-year-old García will begin his third stint with the Angels after playing for the club in 2019 and 2024. He made 28 appearances for the Dodgers to start the current season before joining the Nationals on July 8 and allowing just one run in 10 appearances out of Washington's bullpen. The Angels have one of the major's highest bullpen ERAs despite the presence of closer Kenley Jansen, who has 20 saves and a 2.93 ERA in another strong season. Jansen is among several veteran Angels players who could have value on the trade market this week, making it unclear whether Los Angeles made this four-man trade to boost its chances for contention or to set it up for additional moves. The Angels began Wednesday at 53-55–only four games out of the final AL wild-card spot but with four other teams above them in the standings. Eder has a 4.91 ERA with 15 strikeouts in his eight major league relief appearances for the Angels, who acquired the former top prospect from the White Sox in March. He has been starting in the minor leagues. Brown, the Angels' 12th-round pick in 2023, has been playing at Double-A Rocket City.

Bills rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston diagnosed with sprained right knee ligament, AP source says

Buffalo Bills rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston is out indefinitely after the first-round draft pick was diagnosed with a sprained lateral collateral ligament in his right knee, a person briefed on the injury told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team is off and hasn't provided an update on Hairston's injury since he was hurt in practice a day earlier. first reported the diagnosis. No timetable was provided for how much time Hairston will miss with the injury, which is not as severe as initially feared. He will, however, miss valuable practice time and preseason experience as he competes for a starting job opposite Christian Benford. The injury opens the door for veteran TreDavious White to begin the season as the starter. White, the Bills' 2017 first-round pick, returned to Buffalo for an eighth season after splitting last year with the Los Angeles Rams and Baltimore Ravens. Hairston was hurt when he apparently tripped himself up during individual drills early in practice Tuesday. He lay on the field in pain while having his right knee examined. After getting up under his own power, Hairston was consoled by several teammates, including White. Noted for being among the fastest players in his draft class, Hairston was selected 30th overall following his junior season at Kentucky, where he was a two-year starter. The Bills return to practice Thursday at their training camp facility in suburban Rochester.
