Federal youth age cap not practical for Sabah: Fairuz
Published on: Sat, Jul 26, 2025
By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The national policy capping youth age at 30 is not suitable for Sabah, said Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Fairuz Renddan ( pic ). He said Sabah, like Sarawak, has long maintained the age limit at 40 and does not see a need to align with the federal stance. Fairuz noted that while the law passed in 2019 has seen multiple postponements, its implementation in Sabah could prove unhelpful. He pointed out that most active youth participants in the state are in their late 20s or older, with many still finding their footing well into their 30s. Sabah is developing its own Youth Development Enactment with the Sabah Youth Council, and Fairuz emphasised that maturity and character matter more than age. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ministry approves new site for 188-year-old Sung Siew
Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 By: Mardinah Jikur Text Size: Also present were Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee, Sandakan District Education Officer Roslin Siabok, school principal Kwok Chee Yen, SM Sung Siew School Board Chairman Vun Soon Chong and representatives from the Sabah Education Department and alumni. SANDAKAN: The Education Ministry approved the relocation of the 118-year-old Sekolah Menengah Sung Siew here to a new 25-acre site at Batu 4 near Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Sung Siew. The approval letter was handed over during a ceremony at the school on Saturday, witnessed by Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh during his official working visit here. Also present were Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee, Sandakan District Education Officer Roslin Siabok, school principal Kwok Chee Yen, SM Sung Siew School Board Chairman Vun Soon Chong and representatives from the Sabah Education Department and alumni. The Ministry granted the approval on June 25, following a request submitted four years ago by the school, Sandakan District Education Office and Sabah Education Department. Kah Woh hopes the relocation approval would expedite the construction process. The current school, built on 2.24 acres owned by the Basel Christian Church Malaysia, would move to the new site at Batu 4, where Sung Siew's primary and preschool sections have already been operating for several years after relocating there. 'Over 80 per cent of students live near Batu 4 residential areas which was a key factor in the decision. Our priority is to provide the best educational access for all students here,' he said. Meanwhile, Vun Soon Chong thanked the Ministry, the Sabah Education Department and the District Education Office for the approval, adding that the school board, parents and staff had been actively fundraising for the new campus through charity events and marathons. Earlier, Kah Woh visited SK Sri Tanjung Papat I and SK Sri Tanjung Papat II in Kampung Sim-Sim, which currently share premises after the latter was destroyed by tidal waves in 2018. Following discussions with parents, the Ministry would seek a new site for SK Sri Tanjung Papat II to accommodate the growing number of students. The Deputy Minister also inspected SK St Mary Town and SK St Mary Labuk, where the Ministry has allocated RM185,000 for upgrading works, including a new canteen. He also attended a Bahasa Malaysia Oratory Competition and a Multilingual Writing Test (in Malay, Chinese and English languages) involving 144 finalists from eight districts, praising the decades-old programme for nurturing student talents. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kota Kinabalu: Sabah FC brushed aside DPMM FC from Brunei 3-1 in their latest pre-season friendly at Likas Stadium on Saturday. They took a 2-0 lead at half time against this season's Super League newcomers with goals from Daniel Ting in the 11th minute and Miguel Angel Garrido Cifuentes in the 31st minute. Daniel added his second in the 71st minute before the visitors reduced the deficit late in the match. It was also the third pre-season match for Sabah FC following the 2-8 thrashing by Thailand top club Buriram United in the Asean Charity Shield match held two weeks ago in Thailand preceded by the 4-0 win over another Brunei club side Kasuka FC a week earlier at Likas Stadium. Coach Alto Linus was happy with the progress of the players following the big win. 'It was a good result from the team, but there are still several aspects of our game that need to be improved before the start of the new league season. 'I am satisfied with the overall performance of all the players, including the substitutes who came in the second half. 'This friendly was to strengthen the team's match fitness before the league begins in early August and I want to see the players are fully prepared and able to maintain their consistency to get positive results in every match,' he said. Meanwhile, the Rhinos are set to play more friendly matches before the opening match in the new season against Melaka FC at Likas Stadium on August 10. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
