'If you don't have the experience, don't pretend to know'

KUALA LUMPUR: While pretty much of the world have finalised their domestic league fixtures months in advance, Malaysia is, once again, struggling to come out with its M-League calendar.
And the organiser, Malaysian Football League (MFL), has been slameed for lack of professionalism and poor planning.
Football critic Datuk Dr Pekan Ramli said the "uncertainty" reflects poor governance by the powers-that-be.
"We already know how many teams are competing. We should be able to release the fixtures. Once they are out early, people can plan properly," he said.
"Last year, there were too many last-minute changes. Some teams had already made travel arrangements, then the schedule changed. That's not professional.
"You ask clubs to be professional, but you can't even plan fixtures properly. What kind of example is that?
"If you don't have the experience, don't pretend to know. Go study how the Premier League or J-League do it.
"It's a professional league. Don't run it like amateurs," said Pekan.
Meanwhile, MFL chief executive officer Shazli Shaik said they are in the final stages of preparation and awaiting further details from the Asean Football Federation (Johor Darul Ta'zim and Selangor will compete in the Asean Club Championship).
The Super League is expected to kick off on Aug 8.

Red Giants battle Asia Warriors to stalemate

PETALING JAYA: Selangor drew 0-0 against the Asia Warriors, led by Japanese legend, Keisuke Honda, in a friendly match at MBPJ Stadium today. The match also served as the unveiling of Selangor's 2025-2026 M-League squad. Among the fresh faces in the Red Giants' lineup were Willian Lira, Moses Raj, Picha Autra, Chrigor Moraes and Zach Clough. In the ninth minute, Selangor captain Faisal Halim nearly created a goal with a pinpoint cross to Lira who forced a save from Asia Warriors' veteran goalkeeper Made Wirawan. The 44-year-old Wirawan suffered a knee injury in the 12th minute, and was replaced by Yoo Jaehoon. Selangor's best chance came in the 55th minute when Sharul Nazeem Zulpakar, who replaced Harith Haiqal Adam Afkar at halftime, spun and unleashed a low shot, only to be denied by Yoo. Asia Warriors suffered another blow late in the game when Daisuke Sato was stretchered off in the 78th minute.

Kinoshi won't reveal much to inquisitive Honda

KUALA LUMPUR: Japan football legend and co-founder of Asia Warriors FC, Keisuke Honda, thought he could get some info from his countryman, Selangor head coach Katsuhito Kinoshi, ahead of tomorrow's match at the MBPJ Stadium. But Kinoshi remained tight lipped, as Honda jokingly tried to persuade reporters to ask Kinoshi about his plans during a pre-match press conference at the Selangor FC training centre today. Selangor will use their friendly match against Asia Warriors as part of their preparations for the 2025-2026 M-League. "I asked Kinoshi to share information, but he didn't want to share, so it means that he is gunning for a win against us. "It's going to be a challenging game. I'm looking forward to playing against Selangor," said Honda. Honda said Asia Warriors aim to beat Selangor 1-0, but should the hosts score, they will have to double the score. "I think it's not easy for us to score two goals against Selangor, but that's our game plan, we don't hide any tactics." Kinoshi said that his Selangor team have had a good preseason and, without giving too much away about his squad, said that the Red Giants will have another friendly match after playing the Asia Warriors. Selangor star Faisal Halim, who also joined the pre-match press conference, said: "This is the year I will bounce back and regain my form. This is the time for me to come out with the Faisal Halim (everyone grew to know and love)."

Spain stint spurs winger Arif to take on bigger responsibilities

JDT's Arif Aiman (left) control the ball from Sri Pahang's Muhamad Baquidin during Malaysia Cup final match at National Stadium, Bukit Jalil. — FAIHAN GHANI/The Star PETALING JAYA: National winger Arif Aiman Hanapi's time in Spain during the pre-season has prepared him to take on bigger responsibilities ahead of the new season. The 23-year-old, who was captain of Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) during the team's pre-season stint in Spain, said the time abroad has further motivated him ahead of the Super League season starting next month. "I'm honoured by the trust placed in me. Rather than taking it as pressure, I saw it as an opportunity for me to prove myself both as a player and leader," said Arif after being announced as sportswear brand Puma's newest ambassador yesterday. "I learned a lot from that experience." Arif said there is no rivalry between local-born and heritage players in the national squad. "The presence of heritage players has been a big help to the team from time to time," he said. Arif also said the players are fully focused on preparing for September's friendlies against Singapore and Palestine, and declined to comment on Malaysia's withdrawal from the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup. "It doesn't affect me, I'm just focused on what lies ahead. Preparation is important, even in a friendly game. We need to be fully prepared for our next matches regardless of who we play," he said. The Harimau Malaya will play friendly matches against Singapore on Sept 4 and Palestine on Sept 8.
