Red Giants battle Asia Warriors to stalemate
The match also served as the unveiling of Selangor's 2025-2026 M-League squad.
Among the fresh faces in the Red Giants' lineup were Willian Lira, Moses Raj, Picha Autra, Chrigor Moraes and Zach Clough.
In the ninth minute, Selangor captain Faisal Halim nearly created a goal with a pinpoint cross to Lira who forced a save from Asia Warriors' veteran goalkeeper Made Wirawan.
The 44-year-old Wirawan suffered a knee injury in the 12th minute, and was replaced by Yoo Jaehoon.
Selangor's best chance came in the 55th minute when Sharul Nazeem Zulpakar, who replaced Harith Haiqal Adam Afkar at halftime, spun and unleashed a low shot, only to be denied by Yoo.
Asia Warriors suffered another blow late in the game when Daisuke Sato was stretchered off in the 78th minute.

No happy ending in Macau for Yew Sin and wife Ohori
KUALA LUMPUR: Ong Yew Sin's recent good run, which coincided with his marriage to former Japanese shuttler Aya Ohori, came to an end in Macau on Tuesday. Yew Sin and his long-time partner Teo Ee Yi were dumped out in the first round of the Macau Open, falling 21-15, 16-21, 23-21 to Indonesia's Rahmat Hidayat-Yeremia Rambitan in 53 minutes. The world No. 29 Malaysians even held match point at 21-20 in the deciding game, but the world No. 50 Indonesians clawed back to snatch victory. The defeat ended a promising two-week streak for Yew Sin-Ee Yi on the World Tour, which included a semi-final finish at the Super 750 Japan Open — their first deep run this year after seven straight first-round exits — followed by a quarter-final showing at the Super 1000 China Open last week. With Ohori cheering from the sidelines in Tokyo, the veteran Malaysians appeared to have found a second wind, and despite the Macau setback, will aim to bounce back when the World Tour resumes after next month's World Championships. They are expected to feature at the Hong Kong Open from Sept 9-14. Meanwhile, world junior champions Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing also crashed out in the opening round. The world No. 61 were no match for top seeds Sabar Karyaman-Moh Reza Isfahani of Indonesia, going down 21-16, 21-17 in just 29 minutes. The defeat raises alarm bells, with Aaron-Khai Xing having now failed to progress beyond the second round in all eight of their World Tour outings this year. In women's doubles, world No. 32 Carmen Ting-Ong Xin Yee bowed out in straight games, losing 21-13, 21-11 to world No. 23 Americans Allison Lee-Lauren Lam in 30 minutes.

Big worry as Selangor struggle to find form after poor results in pre-season ties
New leftback: Selangor have signed Thai international Kevin Deeromram to beef up their defence. — Port FC PETALING JAYA: Pre-season results are usually not a true measure of a team's capabilities, but in Selangor's case, there is cause for concern as the team still appear to be struggling to find their rhythm before their season opener against giants Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) in the Charity Shield on Aug 8. Selangor's pre-season struggles continued on Sunday when they were held to a goalless draw by Asia Warriors – a side made up of former regional stars, many of whom are past their prime. Although it was just a friendly, Selangor's lacklustre performance was cause for concern as even head coach Katsuhito Kinoshi admitted. 'I'm not happy with the result. It's a bit of a difficult situation right now because we've made some changes and I need to rotate the players. So it's not the same as a competitive match,' said Kinoshi. 'But we must improve with each game. We need to be more aggressive, show more attacking intent, and play with greater determination. 'I can't say how ready we are in terms of percentage, but to me, it's not enough yet. 'We still have about two weeks, and we need to make the most of it.' Earlier, the Red Giants had travelled to Thailand for a training camp and a series of pre-season friendlies, but the results were far from encouraging. They began with a 1-0 defeat to Ratchaburi, followed by a 2-1 loss to Chonburi. Fortunately, they managed to end the trip on a positive note with a 3-1 win over Bangkok FC. Selangor have also endured a long winless run against JDT, with their best effort in recent years being a 1-1 draw in a Super League clash back in 2022. Their last victory over the Southern Tigers came eight years ago – a 2-1 win in the Super League, courtesy of goals from Andik Vermansyah and Amri Yahyah, before Natxo Insa pulled one back for JDT. Selangor have bolstered their squad for the new season with several notable signings, including Thai international Kevin Deeromram, who is expected to add stability on the left flank of the defence. They have also brought in former Bolton Wanderers midfielder Zach Clough, as well as attacking options in Willian Lira, Omid Musawi, Chrigor Moraes and Picha Autra.

Yew Sin seeks perfect wedding gift for wife Ohori at Macau Open
KUALA LUMPUR: After two fabulous weeks on the World Tour, Ong Yew Sin will be hoping to deliver the perfect gift — a title at the Macau Open — for his wife Aya Ohori, a former world No. 7 in women's singles. The Super 300 tournament begins on Tuesday, with Yew Sin and partner Teo Ee Yi taking on Indonesia's world No. 51 Rahmat Hidayat-Yeremia Rambitan in the first round. Yew Sin tied the knot with former Japanese shuttler Ohori in Melaka last month, and since then, the pair have enjoyed a much-needed upturn in form. After seven straight first-round exits, Yew Sin-Ee Yi roared back to reach the semi-finals of the Super 750 Japan Open a fortnight ago — cheered on by Ohori from the stands. The momentum carried into last week's Super 1000 China Open, where they advanced to the quarter-finals. While the Macau Open may not match the prestige of their last two events, Yew Sin-Ee Yi are now eyeing their first title since the 2020 Thailand Masters. However, the path to glory won't be easy. Standing in their way could be Indonesia's world No. 8 Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Moh Reza Isfahani in the quarter-finals Sabar-Reza, coached by former Olympic champion Hendra Setiawan, will first face Malaysia's world junior champions Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing in the opening round. Another experienced Malaysian pair, Nur Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong, will also look to build on recent form after reaching the Japan Open quarter-finals and narrowly losing to compatriots Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun in the second round of the China Open. World No. 25 Azriyn-Wee Kiong will begin their Macau campaign on Wednesday. In women's doubles, world No. 22 Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing, who impressed by reaching the China Open quarter-finals, will be fired up for another good run. They open against India's world No. 137 Apoorva Gahlawat-Sakshi Gahlawat in the first round.
