RACE 8
(2) COUNTRY GOD is undefeated across a trial and two race starts this preparation and gives the impression the step-up to 1,400m will be ideal. He defeated Riva Aquarama (subsequent winner) and Friar's Legacy (subsequent winner) last start to strengthen his formline up even more. Looks hard to beat.
(1) CAPE LEEUWIN took full advantage of a soft lead at Pinjarra last start and only rises 1kg from the win. Steps up from 1,200m to 1,400m now but Brad Parnham has options from his inside draw.
Stablemate (3) BUNDABERG only won a Maiden last start but did it with ease and won two trials leading into it to suggest he has come back a bigger and better horse this prep.
(4) MY AUTHORITAH was not overly convincing when breaking through at short 1-2 odds first-up.
RACE 10 (BEST BET)
(3) SENSESSIONAL just about ticks every box here. His first-up win in a similar field was soft and while he meets them 2kg worse off now, he has won three from four second-up and is undefeated four from four at this track and distance. It would be a big surprise if something turned the tables on him.
(5) INVESTMENTSTRATEGY loomed in the same race before peaking on his run and should have improved since. He has never been a first-up horse but typically improves sharply second-up (won two from three) and reunites with Brad Parnham who knows him back to front for having been aboard him in all five of his wins.
(1) SENTIMENTAL HERO is first-up, no trial at 1,600m with 60kg but must still be respected. His first campaign for Peter Fernie last year was remarkable and he has a top fresh record.
(7) KAPTAIN KAOS hit the line strongly to produce his best run in a long while last start.
RACE 12
(5) HANCHI has not won a race for 616 days but also had more than 12 months off the scene in that time. He did not handle the soft-7 track last start but his efforts both two and three starts back when hitting the line powerfully without much luck were good enough to win this. Like the fact he gets back to Belmont (where two of his three career wins have come) and Chris Parnham sticks in a smaller field.
(3) MADHI GIRL is flying and will be hard to beat again. She is gunning for a winning hat-trick and drops 1kg off the seven-day back up.
(8) DEFERRED resumes off the back of a slashing trial but 1,000m looks short of his best trip.
(2) CUT THE TALK has not raced for almost 20 months but has a great record and should get the run of the race.
RACE 14
(3) IMMORTAL BLISS trialled up nicely then could not have been more impressive at his WA debut. He only defeated a moderate C3 field but they went hard and his change up speed and late sectionals were still that of a horse who has the progressiveness to go on with it. There is a stack of speed engaged here, so William Pike should be able to sit back and launch late.
(8) SNOW GOD drops back to 1,000m after hitting the front over 1,200m last start and getting gunned down in the final strides. Both of his starts back this prep have been good and he is a big danger.
(4) NONESOSPICY has won three of five (including three of three over 1,000m) and looks the likely leader but she has had four trials over the past 12 weeks and did not set the world on fire in any of them.
(1) MILITARY POWER faces much tougher opposition than his last-start win but has been in the money at six of his nine starts at this track and distance.
RACE 16
(3) ON PATROL can be tricky to catch with his negative racing pattern but he is going as well as ever. Won first-up in this grade, finished powerfully to be beaten a head second-up and was not suited making his run down the middle of the track last start when closer to the fence was the place to be, but he was a good run in review.
(5) DOCTOR JAY jumped favourite first-up but was unsuited on the wrong part of the track. He is a lightly-raced 5YO with ability who can bounce back.
(14) FORTUNE'S LUCK is a consistent mare in and around this grade. She has stuck on well at her last two starts, now gets Pike and can roll forward.
(8) KIRALUI will need luck from the gate but she was luckless first-up and hit the line better than anything last time.
RACE 18
(11) MR TALENTINO was heavily backed on Aug 9 and got the job done. He is one from one off a seven-day back up, drops 1kg and can roll forward from his sticky alley in a race where a lot of his main dangers will likely be back in the field. Could be hard to catch in the straight.
(3) COSMIC CHAOS is ready to win. He has been building into his campaign nicely and just needs some luck from a tricky draw to find a nice spot in running.
(7) TRUE PLAYER backs up off seven days and gets blinkers on for the first time which is always an important gear change with Team Williams.
(6) NOBLE CONNECTION is on trial at the staying distance but has impressed at all three starts in easier grade this prep and gives the impression he will get the trip.
RACE 19
(3) EXCELTRAIN is a model of consistency and was a bit stiff not to finish closer to Little Silver last start after he was momentarily held up behind the leader on straightening. He profiles well at the Belmont 1,400m circuit, gets a drier track which he will appreciate, should lead this time around and Clint Johnson-Porter jumps aboard. Looks a nice race for him.
(4) LITTLE SILVER is flying and meets Exceltrain 1kg better off for beating him last start. Drawn awkwardly but has the tactical speed to slide across to park in the breeze and can win again.
(2) COLD SHIZZLE does his best work at Belmont and caught the eye late last start. He should be ready at his third run back.
(10) STREET BAND is yet to tick the 1,400m box but was very good first-up. No clear run last start.
RACE 20
(4) GAGE ROADS may have been advantaged by parking up outside the leader on an on-speed day in his last-start win but he may land in the same spot again here. He is super consistent across all tracks and conditions and will look the winner again at some stage.
(1) AUTUMN REBEL made a terrific return off a lengthy layoff when second to the in-form Little Silver. Extra 200m suits, will get a lovely run parked off the speed.
(2) HOSTILE TALK backs up off seven days after hitting the line nicely over 1,300m last week and now gets Pike but also rises 300m to a mile for the first time.
(7) BECALOTTI steps up 400m at her second run back but trialled well and ran an absolute bolter first-up at odds.

Our Jet ready to take off in Malaysia

Our Jet's trial at Sungai Besi on July 22 was his first and only official hit-out in Malaysia, and true to his name, he took off and soared. Such was his dominance that, when the finish loomed, he had put three lengths on his stablemate and the second-placed Momochiko. The Winson Cheng-trained galloper also pounded home the message, when he broke the minute mark for the 1,000m by running out the trip in 59.69sec. Until then, the Bradbury's Luck five-year-old had been kept under wraps. That trial was the first time racegoers had seen him in an official outing. On the morning of Aug 19 and, on a track rated good, Our Jet was put through his paces on the training track at Sungai Besi. Just like he did in that impressive trial a month ago, the Australian-bred again turned in a performance when he ran the 600m in a flashy 37sec. That piece of work was enough to suggest that Cheng's runner could play a big part in the Novice event (1,150m) on Aug 24. Besides, until being flown to Kuala Lumpur to continue his racing career, Our Jet - who was then known as Salt Lake Shake - won once and placed four times in Australia. That win was in a Maiden contest over the 1,000m on Oct 29, 2023. The Alan Leung-owned gelding will be taking on some other proven runners on Aug 24, but he looks up to the task. Cheng will also be looking for a good showing from Dragon Cavallo. Down to contest the Class 4B sprint over the 1,020m on Aug 24, he turned in a nice workout when running the 600m in 38.7sec. Dragon Cavallo may be an "old-timer" at nine years old, but the son of Spirit Of Boom still has what it takes to threaten younger rivals. Take his last run in the Class 4B race (1,020m) on Aug 2, he teased his rivals with a front-running show, only to be caught in the closing stages. He eventually had to settle for third behind the winner Smart One. Dragon Cavallo, who used to race as Boom Shakalaka when prepared by Tim Fitzsimmons and Shane Baertschiger at Kranji, is not yet ready to be put out to pasture. The eight-time winner, who last won in a Class 4B sprint (1,020m) on March 9, still looks capable of adding money to the kitty. Another runner who knows how to win a race at the Selangor Turf Club is Infinity Victory, who ran out the 600m in 39sec on Aug 19. From the stables of Simon Dunderdale, Infinity Victory scored a smart win at his last start when, in pouring rain, he beat Family Delight by a short head in a Class 4A (1,700m) event on Aug 9. Troy See did the navigating. That was Infinity Victory's second win in 11 starts. The son of Alpine Eagle had opened his account on June 7 when, in yet another Class 4A race over 1,700m, he beat Elite Boy by 1¼ lengths. He goes over the shorter 1,600m in a Class 4B event on Aug 24, but it should not pose any problem. After all, it was on April 6 that the six-year-old ran a gallant second to Enticing in an Open Maiden race over the mile. Then, from the training track, there was Khan Pegasus. Lowly rated at 23 points, he worked above his grade when running the 600m in 36.2 sec. An eight-year-old by Deep Field, the Ananthen Kuppan-trained gelding has been finding it hard to add to his six career wins. The best he did in recent times was finishing fourth behind Forget Romance in a Class 5B race (1,600m) three starts ago on June 22. That day, when ridden by Lim Aun Kean, he was slowly out of the gates and last of 14 runners at the 1,000m mark. However, he started racing at the top of the home stretch and was doing his best work late. The ex-Singapore galloper eventually finished just 2¼ lengths behind the winner. On his workout, Khan Pegasus begs to be included in those novelty bets. brian@

Two from three for Mega Skye

Watch for Mega Skye when he makes his debut at the races. For now, trainer Frank Maynard has been sending his galloper to barrier trials and, like it was on Aug 5, Mega Skye once again turned in an impressive show at those early morning hit-outs. Ridden by pre-apprentice jockey M. Zulhilmi, he ran away with the third contest in stylish fashion. Here is how this trial went down on a good track at the Selangor Turf Club. Having had to clear the outermost gate, Mega Skye was neatly into stride and quickly sat at the withers of the leader and stablemate, Northam Beach. There he stayed for most of the trip but when push came to shove, he pulled clear to win by an impressive margin of two lengths. Red Sky, who was also in a stalking position for most of the 1,000m trip, claimed second spot, a half-length ahead of the early front runner, Northam Beach. But it was all about Mega Skye. In quick succession, that was his second win at the trials. It was only a week ago on July 29 that Mega Skye claimed his first trial victory. That day, when ridden by Andre da Silva, he did the trip in 1min 1.26sec. His time for this latest run was a tad slower. He ran home in 1:02.12. But it was just as impressive. A New Zealand-bred by Ocean Park, Mega Skye is a three-year-old and Maynard is in no hurry to thrust him into the real action. However, the day has to come sooner or later and when it does, we could be looking at another one of those debut winners. If Maynard was a happy man trackside, Simon Dunderdale would have been as beaming as he downed that cup of coffee. Currently holding down second place on the trainer's log with 37 winners for the season, the New Zealander introduced racegoers to two more exciting newcomers. They were Fright and Capetian, who claimed the second and fourth trials of the morning respectively. As his name implies, Fright showed scaringly good action in his first appearance at these trials. Ridden by Khaw Choon Kit, he was last to be locked up but first to bounce out when the gates crashed back. Racing in a tight group, he was always among the first three. Hitting the 300m mark and he was in a fight until Khaw extricated him from the pack. Fright saw daylight and he kept up a brazen gallop to win by a short head. The Wonderbolt deserved credit for staying on to fight it out with the winner. He took second, beating the Sharee Hamilton-trained Radetzky Marsch into third spot by a massive 5 3⁄4lengths. Fright clocked a neat time of 1:00.85. A four-year-old by Brazen Beau, Fright is not new to the game. Until being flown out to Malaysia to join Dunderdale's yard, he raced four times in Australia where he picked up a second and two third-placings from just four outings. He placed second on July 5, 2024 in a 1,000m Maiden race at Ballarat. He later went on to take third in races on Nov 5 and 16, 2024. Both were over the short sprint trips of 1,000m. Watch for him when Dunderdale sends him out for his first Malaysian start. Capetian, who was having an Official Race Trial (ORT) had to really work hard for his win. Ridden by Marc Lerner, he had settled in fourth of five runners at the 600m mark. But the Frenchman was in no hurry as he allowed Storm Warrior (Shafiq Rizuan) and Swey City Flyer (Khaw) to trade blows up front. He made his move a furlong from home and quickly had them in his cross hairs. A flick of the reins brought him on level terms and he then got Capetian to put his head down where it really mattered. That did the job and Capetian took the honours, beating stablemate Swey City Flyer by a short head. Storm Warrior, from Richard Lim's yard, stayed on for third, another short head away. Capetian turned three on Aug 1. He is still young and learning the ropes. However, from the way he parked himself before picking off his rivals one by one showed fighting spirit. Under Dunderdale's guidance, he could and should shape up to be a good one. brian@
