‘Revive scheme to bring more adi dravidar, tribal students to IITs, NITs'
Based on a reply to a Right to Information (RTI) Act query, activist S Karthik told TOI that had the scheme been properly implemented, hundreds of adi dravidar and tribal students in Tamil Nadu would have got opportunities to study in
IITs
or NITs. "The scheme became defunct almost the same year citing administrative reasons. As per the scheme, 50 students would be selected by an exam each year and given special training for JEE and AIEEE exams by selected institutions at 1 lakh per student for two years in their Class XI and Class XII," he said.
The RTI reply showed that a GO dated Oct 15, 2013, was issued by the adi dravidar and tribal welfare department, regarding implementation of the scheme under TAHDCO. However, the scheme was abandoned without a single beneficiary. He said it is baffling that the state government did not give a second thought to the scheme and urged it to immediately revive the scheme by allotting necessary funds and select at least 100 students for the following year.
Notably, at present, the Naan Mudhalvan scheme of the Tamil Nadu govt provides support for students from underprivileged backgrounds for higher education.

Group broke through barricades & scuffled with officers, says FIR
1 2 Lucknow: The FIR in the case lodged at 6.21 pm at Kotwali police station of Fatehpur, says that a group of approximately 160 individuals, led by one Abhishek Shukla and several others, attempted to vandalize the 200-year-old mausoleum. "The incident took place at the Mangi Maqbara in Abunagar, where the group, armed with flags, sticks and rods, sought to damage the site, claiming it to be a temple. The protest was organised by the Math Mandir Sanrakshan Sangharsh Samiti, which had called for a march to the site, demanding it be recognised as a Thakur Dwara temple. In response, local authorities had deployed a significant police presence, including officers from various police stations across the district, to maintain law and order," it says. "Despite repeated attempts by the police to dissuade the protesters, the group broke through the barricades and engaged in a scuffle with the officers. They managed to partially damage a tomb within the maqbara, leading to heightened tensions among the local Muslim community, who were left agitated and distressed by the actions," says FIR. The situation quickly escalated, creating a chaotic environment and threatening communal harmony in the area, it adds. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? Administration recommends two candidates for Padma Shri
Kanpur: The district administration has recommended the names of Dhani Ram Panther and Ranjit Singh for the Padma Shri award. The administration has forwarded their files to the government for consideration for the prestigious award. The Central government has instructed districts to submit the names of eligible candidates for the prestigious award each year. Dhani Ram Panther has cremated many unclaimed dead bodies, while Ranjit Singh, an artist, has created portraits of several individuals on copper plates. This is for the first time that the administration has recommended the names of two persons. It is unclear who will receive the award as the selection process is lengthy, but both candidates are deemed deserving of the award. District magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh said that the selection process for the Padma Shri award was a bit long and added that Dhani Ram was recommended for special services and Ranjit Singh for special art. Dhani Ram regularly performed cremations of unclaimed dead bodies with complete rituals. Around 80 years old, Ranjit Singh has preserved decades-old copper plate portrait art, including portraits of several celebrities such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Indian cricket captains. After Pak Army Chief Munir's visit, US designates Baloch Liberation Army as Foreign Terrorist Organisation
The US administration under President Donald Trump, continues to build closer ties with Pakistan, which has not only been on and off the Financial Action Task Force's (FATF) grey list, but is also known to have given shelter to the likes of Osama Bin Laden and Hafiz Saeed read more The United States Department of State on Monday (August 11) announced that it has designated Pakistan-based Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its armed wing, The Majeed Brigade, as a Foreign Terrorist Organisations (FTOs). The statement said the State Department is designating BLA and its alias, The Majeed Brigade, as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTO), and adding the Majeed Brigade as an alias to BLA's Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) designation from 2019. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The action, it said, 'demonstrates the Trump administration's commitment to countering terrorism'. The move comes shortly after Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, visited Washington DC and threatened to wipe out half the world with nuclear weapons. The US State Department said that in 2024, BLA claimed responsibility for suicide attacks near Karachi airport and the Gwadar Port Authority Complex. In 2025, the group came into the limelight once more for orchestrating the hijacking of the Jaffar Express train travelling from Quetta to Peshawar in March, which resulted in the deaths of 31 civilians and security personnel, and over 300 passengers being taken hostage. 'Terrorist designations play a critical role in our fight against this scourge and are an effective way to curtail support for terrorist activities,' the State Department said. Despite such lofty statements, the US administration under President Donald Trump, continues to build closer ties with Pakistan, which has not only been on and off the Financial Action Task Force's (FATF) grey list, but is also known to have given shelter to the likes of Osama Bin Laden and Hafiz Saeed. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In fact, the warming ties between Washington and Islamabad, as well as Field Marshal Munir's second visit to the US in as many months, come despite Pakistan Army's overt support to terrorists behind the globally condemned Pahalgam terror attack. Pictures of Pakistan Army personnel attending the funerals of terrorists killed in Operation Sindoor had earlier gone viral. Also notable is that the new designation to BLA, which Pakistan claims (without evidence) is an India-backed group, gives the powerful military man Field Marshal Munir a much-needed diplomatic win. He, and Pakistan, had been embarrassed on the global stage when Pakistani politicians defended the TRF after it was designated a terrorist organisation. The humiliation was only compounded when India presented proof that multiple Pakistan Air Force fighter jets had been downed during Operation Sindoor. In light of these events, a crucial question remains: Does the Trump administration truly have a 'commitment to countering terrorism' or only a relationship of convenience with the issue?
