Cowboys' Dak Prescott says legacy takes a back seat in Super Bowl pursuit, wants to win for personal 'sanity'
Earlier this year, longtime Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Zack Martin retired after 11 seasons with the team.
Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is entering his 10th season in Dallas.
Martin's departure made the 31-year-old Prescott the longest-tenured player on the Cowboys' roster. Prescott recently reflected on his career and admitted the past decade has gone by quickly.
"It's not hard to be reflective," he said Thursday at the Cowboys' mandatory minicamp. "I think you have to, especially with how [his 10 seasons] have been. Some being injured, some getting to knocking on the door and not finishing it. What it does really is just makes you grateful for the opportunity. Every day you get to walk into this building, you're healthy. Every day you get to approach your teammates. You get to approach this game that you love."
The Cowboys finished with a disappointing 7-10 record last season, but the new season will bring changes to the team's roster and coaching staff. Prescott will have a new wide receiver in 2025, George Pickens. Last month, the Pittsburgh Steelers traded Pickens to the Cowboys.
The franchise also moved on from coach Mike McCarthy and promoted Brian Schottenheimer to head coach.
Prescott has received numerous accolades over the course of his NFL career, including offensive Rookie of the Year in 2015 and leading the league in passing touchdowns in 2023. But he has a 2-5 postseason record and has never made it to a conference championship game or Super Bowl.
While Prescott wants to win a Super Bowl ring, he made it clear he is not pursing the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy to secure his personal legacy.
"I want to win a championship," Prescott said. "The legacy, whatever comes after I finish playing, will take care of itself. I want to win a championship. Be damned if it's just for my legacy or if it's for this team. It's for my personal being, for my sanity. The legacy will take care of itself.
"For me, it's about not taking anything for granted," he added. "Living in the moment, soaking up everything and just making sure I'm the best version of myself to push these other guys to do that. I know we'll feel good about the results."
Prescott missed nine games last season with a hamstring injury, and the Cowboys missed the playoffs.

The demise exposed the underbelly of the loosely regulated world of cryptocurrencies, and it devastated investors who in some cases experienced crippling financial losses. It also embroiled in legal action celebrities, influencers and venture capital firms that had endorsed the exchange, with FTX customers arguing that they had been deceived. In 2022, a group of FTX customers sued Mr. O'Neal and a string of other high-profile actors and athletes for compensation. Mr. O'Neal's $1.8 million settlement, which the filing said was finalized in April, makes him one of several defendants who have settled the suit since it was filed. Trevor Lawrence, the football player, and popular content creators were among a group who agreed in 2024 to a settlement of about $1.3 million. This settlement, which pertains only to Mr. O'Neal, still needs court approval. Sunil Kavuri, an FTX customer who has said he lost his life savings of about $2 million, welcomed the news. 'Settling with Shaquille O'Neal helps bring closure to the darkest period of our lives,' he said on Saturday. Other defendants, including Tom Brady, Gisele Bündchen, Larry David and Steph Curry, have argued for the claims to be dismissed. A judge dismissed some of the claims, which include conspiracy and deceptive practices, but allowed others to proceed. In an interview in 2023 with Vanity Fair, Ms. Bündchen said that she had 'trusted the hype' and felt 'blindsided.' The actions have not been limited to high-profile celebrities: Some YouTube influencers have also settled after FTX customers accused them of illegally promoting the exchange on their platforms. Lawyers listed for Mr. O'Neal and for the FTX customers who brought the suit did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Saturday.

"He was always somebody that really was on his details. What I guess seeing now is just the accuracy, the footwork, so more of his body mechanics that he wanted to emphasize. I see that coming through in his play." Last season, Daniels was playing with house money as a rookie just looking to prove himself. That will not be the case in year two, as he has lofty expectations to live up to. After leading his team deep into the postseason, many want to see him keep solidifying himself as one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL. In the span of one year, Daniels was able to turn the Commanders from a retooling team to a contender. Now, the pressure is on for him to keep Washington in a position to contend in the NFC. Daniels does have a lot of things going for him when it comes to maintaining his current trajectory. For starters, he knows what he's getting into now with a year of experience under his belt. Also, Washington continues to put him in a position to succeed. They went out and upgraded the cast of talent around Daniels in the offseason, most notably trading for Deebo Samuel. Coming off his strong rookie campaign, Daniels looks ready to take the reigns as one of the premier QBs in the NFL. Only time will tell if he can continue to answer the call for the Commanders as the face of the franchise.
