
Prime accused in Sattankulam custodial deaths case wants to turn approver
He recently filed an application before the trial court, the First Additional District and Sessions Court in Madurai stating that he was willing to turn approver, depose as witness and disclose the truth in the case. He said he wanted to make full disclosure about the incident and sought to be pardoned.
Last month, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had dismissed the bail petition filed by Sridhar. The court had observed the alleged charges against Sridhar were serious in nature. Moreover, the case is admittedly almost at the end of the trial, the court had observed. Sridhar had sought bail for preparing the argument.
The CBI had filed the charge sheet against the then Inspector S. Sridhar, Sub-Inspectors P. Raghu Ganesh and K. Balakrishnan, Head Constables S. Murugan and A. Saamidurai, Constables M. Muthuraj, S. Chelladurai, X. Thomas Francis and S. Veilumuthu. Special Sub-Inspector Pauldurai, an accused in the case, died after contracting COVID-19.

Haryana schools to be closed on July 26 for CET exams, check details here
The Haryana government is taking all measures to conduct the Common Eligibility Test (CET), scheduled to be conducted on Saturday and Sunday (July 26 and 27, 2025), in a free and fair manner. Haryana schools will be closed on Saturday, July 26, 2025 for CET exams. (Representative image/Praful Gangurde/HT Photo) Officials have said that schools in the state will remain closed on Saturday owing to the examination. In addition, the Director General of Police Shatrujeet Kapur also issued necessary instructions to senior police officers in all districts for the fair conduct of CET, news agency PTI reported. Also read: Haryana CET exams 2025 to be conducted under strict police vigilance, DGP issues directives The directives include imposition of prohibitory orders under Section 163 (power to issue orders in urgent cases of nuisance or apprehended danger) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. This will be enforced within a 500 metre radius of all examination centres. Furthermore, no vehicles will be allowed to park within a 200 metre radius of the examination centres. Also, on the day of the exam, photocopy and printing shops near the centres have been ordered to remain closed. DGP Kapur also appealed to the residents, candidates, and their guardians to cooperate with the police and report any suspicious activity by dialling '112' emergency helpline or the local police. He urged the general public to avoid unnecessary travel on both exam days, and help maintaining a smooth and uninterrupted traffic system. This year, approximately 13.48 lakh candidates are eligible to appear in the examination this year and a total of 834 examination centres have been set up across the state. Madras HC flags lapses in SC/ST Act cases; directs DGP to enforce strict compliance with rules
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has flagged the procedural lapses committed by the investigating officers while dealing with complaints of caste discrimination filed under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 and directed the Tamil Nadu DGP to ensure strict compliance with the law. "In several matters relating to complaints made under SC/ST (PoA), procedural lapses are being noticed. The second respondent shall communicate a copy of this order to all SPs who shall ensure strict compliance with the provisions of the SC/ST (PoA) Act and the Rules, particularly Rule 7 relating to the rank of the IO and time-bound filing of the final report,' said Justice P Velmurugan in a recent order. Citing a Supreme Court order, he said when a complaint discloses a cognizable offence under the provisions of the SC/ST (PoA) Act, no preliminary enquiry is permissible either under this Act or the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the enquiry on the complaint shall be held by an officer in the rank of a DSP and not by an Inspector as provided under section 7 (1) of the Act.
