Pune ‘drug party' raid: CM Fadnavis' first reaction as ex-minister Eknath Khadse's son-in-law among 7 held

Mint27-07-2025
In first comments after former Maharashtra minister Eknath Khadse's son-in-law was arrested after Pune Police busted a rave party on Sunday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that although it appears that a crime was committed, he will only be able to talk more about it after he receives a proper briefing.
According to a PTI report, police arrested seven persons after busting a "drug party" following a raid at an apartment in Pune early on Sunday and seized narcotics, hookah set ups and liquor, officials said.
Pranjal Khewalkar, the husband of former Maharashtra minister Eknath Khadse's daughter Rohini Khadse, was among those arrested, they said. Rohini Khadse is state president of the women's wing of the opposition NCP (SP).
Reacting to the arrest, CM Fadnavis said, 'Even I saw it only in the media. I've been attending programmes since morning, so I haven't received an actual briefing on it yet. Based on what is being shown in the media, the police have busted a rave party, and some people have been found there. Drugs were reportedly found.'
'Once I receive a proper briefing, I will be able to comment on it. Prima facie, it appears that a crime has taken place at that location,' the CM was quoted by ANI as saying.
The police's Crime Branch carried out the raid at the studio apartment located in the upscale Kharadi area of Maharashtra's Pune city based on a tip-off about a rave party, an official told PTI.
The raid was conducted around 3.30 am on Sunday and a 'drug party' was busted at the studio apartment, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Nikhil Pingle said at a press conference in Pune.
During the raid and subsequent search, police seized 2.7 grams of cocaine-like substance, 70 gm of a ganja-like substance, a hookah pot, various hookah flavours, and liquor, and beer bottles, Pingle said.
"We have arrested seven individuals, identified as Pranjal Khewalkar, Nikhil Poptani, Sameer Sayyad, Shripad Yadav, Sachin Bhombe, Isha Singh and Prachi Sharma, under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act," he said.
All the accused were sent for medical examination and their reports are awaited, the official said.
Reacting to the raid, Eknath Khadse said it should be probed if there was a political motive behind the police action. Shiv Sena (UBT) deputy leader Sushma Andhare said the raid is a message for those speaking against the government.

‘A for Akhilesh', ‘B for Babasaheb': FIR against SP leader Farhad Alam over ‘PDA Pathshala'

Samajwadi Party leader (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over an FIR filed against a local SP leader in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur for allegedly teaching 'politicised alphabets' to children. SP City Vyom Bindal said a complaint was filed by Main Singh, a resident of the Kallarpur Gurjar village, alleging that local SP leader Farhad Alam Gada was teaching children "politicised alphabets" at a 'PDA Pathshala.' According to news agency PTI, the complainant said that the children were taught "A for Akhilesh", "B for Babasaheb", "D for Dimple," and "M for Mulayam Singh Yadav". The incident came to light after a purported video of the lesson, recorded at the SP leader's home in Ramnagar, was posted on social media and went viral. The children in the video were reportedly from a private school and were seen wearing their uniforms. In his defense, Farhad Gada had previously claimed that the "PDA Pathshala" was not just for teaching ABCs but also to educate children about the 'great men of Samajwadi ideology,' PTI reported. He had also stated his intention to open similar schools across the district. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav posted on 'X', 'Even the British did not file an FIR for studying. The anti-education face of the BJP has now been exposed to the public. Now the BJP will be gone forever. Condemnable.'

Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar come together for family function in Mumbai

Two years since the split of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), the rival Pawar factions came together for the engagement ceremony of Sharad Pawar's grandnephew Yugendra Pawar with Tanishka Kulkarni. Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar, Supriya Sule, and her relatives also attended the ceremony(X) NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar and Maharashtra deputy CM Ajit Pawar attended the traditional ceremony held in Mumbai on Sunday. The private ceremony, conducted at the Mumbai home of Yugendra Pawar's bride-to-be, Tanishka Kulkarni, turned into a setting of family warmth and festivities, and united members of the formerly split Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) under one roof. Images and videos from the event show smiles, blessings, and familial bonds. Yugendra is the son of deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar's younger brother Shrinivas Pawar. In spite of having a tough electoral background, Yugendra lost from his own uncle Ajit Pawar in the 2024 Assembly polls from Baramati. Present there too were Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar, Supriya Sule, and her relatives. This comes just a few months after the Pawars attended the engagement ceremony of Ajit Pawar's younger son, Jay Pawar, in Pune. NCP 2023 split In 2023, Ajit Pawar's breakaway from the NCP and joining the BJP-controlled Maharashtra government caused waves in the state's political scene. The move led to a formal party split and saw family members contesting elections against each other. Supriya Sule, who contested against her sister-in-law Sunetra Pawar in the Lok Sabha polls, added fuel to the narrative of a divided family. Political attacks continue Meanwhile, on the political front, Supriya Sule slammed the BJP-led Mahayuti government, which her cousin is also a part of, for failing to address the rising crime rate in Maharashtra. She accused it of being a mute spectator as miscreants had no fear of the law. Addressing media persons, the MP from Baramati alleged that a ₹4,900 crore scam was executed in the Majhi Ladki Bahin Yogana, the Centre's pet scheme, where women receive monthly support of ₹1,500. She also raised a red flag on irregularities in the Election Commission's management of voter lists in Bihar, calling for a detailed debate in the Parliament on electoral accountability and transparency.

Man held at Mumbai airport with marijuana worth ₹14.73 cr concealed in 'diplomatic' cargo

Mumbai Customs has arrested a traveller at the international airport here for allegedly trying to smuggle 15 kg of hydroponic weed with an estimated value of ₹14.73 crore, officials said. The contraband was concealed in a packet labelled as "Diplomatic Pouch of Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)", officials said on Sunday (August 3, 2025). The traveller had landed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport from Bangkok, an official said. "During the examination of his baggage, Customs officers recovered 14.738 kg of suspected hydroponic weed (marijuana), with an illicit market value of approximately ₹14.738 crore," he said, adding that the accused was trying to smuggle the contraband by falsely declaring the consignment as confidential diplomatic cargo linked to national security. The contraband was concealed inside envelopes bearing purported Ministry of External Affairs markings and sealed with official MEA tape, he said, adding that the trolley bag also contained copies of various UNODC and fake "top secret mission" reports. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
