Ombudsman lays down the law in Prince of Wales
The feat came one day after their superstar Field Of Gold destroyed his rivals in the Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes (1,600m) on the first day of the five-day meeting.
Ombudsman's jockey William Buick held his nerve when looking for a gap through a wall of horses as the race reached its climax.
However, the Norway-born jockey found a way round and then stormed clear to give the Gosden stable a sixth win in the race.
Having endured a tough time, Buick, 36, released his pent-up emotion, punching the air in delight as he steered the $42 outsider past the post.
"It has been a difficult few days," said Buick. "I have got a little bit of experience, so I try and stay level.
"I have a lot of good rides. You look forward right?"
John Gosden, for whom it was a 70th Royal Ascot winner, said Buick had been "patient and rewarded".
Earlier the Gosdens had enjoyed a record-extending sixth win in the £225,000 Group 2 Duke of Cambridge Stakes (1,600m).
Top Australia-based New Zealand jockey James McDonald swooped to win on Crimson Advocate ($38).
"Absolutely delighted, pleasure to ride a winner for the group (the Emir of Qatar's Wathnan Racing for whom it was their third winner of this year's edition)," said McDonald, recording his fifth Royal Ascot winner.
"I am very lucky to be jogging on the right spot at the right time.
"Even when you do not have a fancied horse in a race here it is a very special, elegant and graceful place to ride at."
Earlier, Aidan O'Brien ticked off one of the rare races missing from his win list, True Love winning the opening £150,000 Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes (1,000m) in fine style.
It was the 55-year-old Irish master trainer's 93rd Royal Ascot winner, English multiple-champion jockey Ryan Moore's 87th. AFP

Bittersweet day for Ismadi after Vincent's Star's easy win
Talented sprinter Vincent's Star posted an impressive 5¼-length victory first-up in the RM30,000 Enrich Stakes A contest (1,200m) at Ipoh on Aug 10, but that was to be his last run for trainer Ismadi Ismail. The five-year-old son of Epaulette, together with stablemate Quicken Away - who finished third in the same race - will both be transferred to trainer Wayne Lim's yard to continue their racing careers in Kuala Lumpur. The Ipoh-based Ismadi had already spoken to Vincent's Star and Quicken Away's owners, S-Equine Racing Stable and Jimmy Bin Nonong, about a month ago. "They will go to Kuala Lumpur tomorrow. Of course I feel a bit sad, but they are both good horses and I've already spoken to their owners about their future," he said. "I said it's better for them to race in KL where they can compete in better races than here, where races can sometimes get cancelled." Ismadi fielded a three-pronged attack in the highlight race, which also included Rocket Boy, and he was relieved to see Vincent's Star bounce back from his disappointing run last time. The Australian-bred was coming off the back of four consecutive wins - all over the 1,200m - when he stepped out in the Perak Turf Club Community Shield (1,200m) on May 11. Then ridden by regular partner Rueven Ravindra - who won on him on that four occasions - Vincent's Star could not muster an acceleration like he usually did in the straight and faded away to run sixth, almost 10 lengths behind the winner Faithful Leader. This time, however, Vincent's Star (Azizi Azhari) stalked noted speedster Big Bad Mama (Ganeesh Munusamy) in second, and his two-kilo claimer waited patiently till the 200m to make his move. Vincent's Star ($15) struck the front quickly, before going away to win effortlessly on the yielding ground. A line of four behind him fought for the minor placings, with Shirvo (Lim Aun Kean)grabbing second, just ½ length ahead of Quicken Away (Hafis Saari). Ismadi's third runner, Rocket Boy (How Yang) finished another short head away in fourth, beating Big Bad Mama into fifth. Ismadi said the three-month break did Vincent's Star a world of good. "He is very sensitive. After the run last time, his weight dropped and I suspected he had ulcer, so I let him rest," he said. "I probably rushed him a bit after his four straight wins, but he's back to his ideal weight of 528kg now. "I wanted to take two kilos off him, so I put Azizi on and he rode him beautifully." Malaysian jockey Lim took the riding honours of the day in Ipoh with a rare four-timer, booting home Northern Alliance ($84), Chosen One ($29), Mega Ocean ($31) and Autumn Blitz ($29), and brought up his season tally to 11 wins. sharonzhang@

Hard to resist Rebel's Romance
1 Cold Heart Group 1 winner of the Gran Premio Derby Paulista (2,400m) in his native Brazil in 2023 and an interesting recruit to the domestic racing scene. Slowly acclimatising and recorded an encouraging third in the Group 2 Grosser Hansa-Preis (2,400m) in Hamburg latest on July 5 - a race that is hard to read, though. Trip is not a concern and will aim to keep up trainer Peter Schiergen's hot Group 1 form after winning the Preis der Diana with Nicoreni on Aug 3. 2 Junko French stayer trained by Andre Fabre and who is no stranger to these shores, winning the Group 1 Grosser Allianz Preis von Bayern (2,400m) in Munich in November 2023, followed the next month by a Group 1 Sha Tin win albeit in the slowest-run Hong Kong Vase (2,400m). Relatively lightly raced since and winless in three races this season, but latest third to Calandagan in the Group 1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (2,400m) on June 29 looks good enough on paper. 3 Narrativo Fancied for the Group 1 German Derby (2,400m) in 2024 which turned out to be a non-event for him. Then second - though well beaten - by Al Riffa in this race in 2024. Latest second (ahead of Cold Heart) in the Group 2 Grosser Hansa-Preis (2,400m) in Hamburg latest on July 5 was good, though he is not the easiest to win with. 4 Rebel's Romance Godolphin's globetrotting superstar who has more airmiles than most of us. Winner of this race in 2022 has shown that he retains all his ability at the tender age of seven in 2025 with three wins, including the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes (2,400m) on June 21, breaking a long run of outs at Royal Ascot for his trainer Charlie Appleby. British prodigy Billy Loughnane does the steering. Highest rated horse in this, and whatever beats him probably wins the race. 5 Straight Well-travelled galloper who has not shown much ability on the track since a fruitful period last autumn - second to Rebel's Romance in the Group 1 Preis von Europa (2,400m) in Cologne on Sept 22, and winning the Group 2 Gran Premio del Jockey Club (2,400m) at San Siro, Milan on Oct 13. The booking of English jockey Jack Mitchell points to some stable confidence. 6 Nastaria Tough and durable mare who has a bit of a cult following in Germany. A stout stayer who recently won the Listed Grosser Preis der Hannoverschen Volksbank - Steher Cup (3,000m) in Hanover on June 9, but looks outclassed in this. Aug 9 Perth form analysis of all eight Pinjarra races
RACE 5 (1) CASTLE ROAD will see many shy away from him for the 61kg but it is 1,000m and he is a Stakes winner taking on maidens. He beat subsequent Karrakatta Plate placegetter and Sires Produces Stakes winner Just Too Fly by nearly 3.5L in the Perth Stakes and he is a classy sprinter. (7) COSMIC TREAT is on debut and heads to the races this preparation off only a 400m jumpout, but she has always shown ability. (5) DESERT LIFE was scratched from Aug 7 to save for this. (4) SUNSET SESSION beat a winner in his recent trial. RACE 7 (3) NOBLE CONNECTION was still able to reel them in last start, even if the first 900m was run six lengths slower than average. He is flying and the new season four-year-olds have an outstanding record in Westspeed Platinum grade this time of year. Drawn a bit sticky but expecting a three-deep line to build. (4) CATCH THESE HANDS got to the line well fresh and all eight wins are in blinkers. Important gear change. (6) ROCK IN WONDER is always a winning chance with his free-wheeling racing pattern and should not absorb much pressure. (7) DECISION MAKER has come back bigger and better this time in. RACE 9 (1) LORD GANNICUS was beaten a nose by Famous Dain three starts ago and gets a 4kg swing in the weights to try and turn the tables. Since then, he has led and won beating First Encounter and last weekend led in the 84+ when beaten under 1.5L by Sensessional. He has backed up three times for one win and two minors and is in career-best form. (2) COOL MEMORY will need to be tough to breeze and win. (4) FAMOUS DAIN looked the mapped horse last start and got every favour. This looks a lot trickier but still has claims. (3) SUNNY HONEY is a query at the mile. RACE 11 (1) TRUE PLAYER is the progressive stayer in the race and, with the tongue tie going on, maybe there is an excuse to be made for his last-start failure. Query on the wet tracks but he is worth another chance. (2) ALASKAN is racing below his best. However, he also did not fire a shot last preparation until he was fifth-up over 2,200m when running third in a 66+. Timing is right for a sharp improvement. (3) MANZOR MAGIC was all the rage last weekend but never got into the contest and now loses William Pike. (4) LONG GENES is getting closer. RACE 13 (Best Bet) (10) SUNLIT FRESCO fits the profile of a Belmont 1,000m winner. This is a wet-track proven, high-speed mare who trialled super recently at Lark Hill and resumes with only 54.5kg on her back. (6) HORCRUX maps to get the drop on the speed pair and ran well last start from that position. Looks the danger. (7) EARTH GOD can come across from his wide gate and park up over the speed as well. (2) MADHI GIRL does it tough with 59kg. RACE 15 (3) SOLDANELLE made a brilliant return to racing, however, she does feel like a very risky betting proposition because she has burnt punters a few times over the journey. Trainer Stefan Vahala has now conceded that she does not stay and she is best ridden cold over the shorter trips. (6) ESSENTRIC NATURE was sent out as favourite in a 66+ that contained Want A Winner on his return to racing. Second-up he gets out to a more suitable 1,400m, he drops into a 60+ Graduation. Just barrier 15/15 and where he gets to are a query. (5) CRUISE TO VICTORY has raced well all campaign. (13) WHERE'S MY LUNCH would like it to pour during the meeting. RACE 17 (12) STORMCHASER returned in outstanding order first-up for Luke Fernie last campaign at 1,200m and won against the pattern from the back. This is the campaign that he can stand up and prove himself at this level. Was only two lengths off Luvnwar and Toropa last start and conceded them both weight. That form measures up. (4) WIND AND THE LION beat the older horses in the H.G. Bolton and did not look to handle the track conditions that well either. Super win. (10) PETULA is building in confidence again. (6) PULI gets conditions to suit and bears watching. RACE 18 (4) WANT A WINNER travelled like the winner from start to finish last race, when breezing on top of a genuine tempo and holding off the late challenge of horses who had far more economical runs than him in transit. If he marches forward into a similar stalking position, following up behind King Adviso and Dirty Chai, he will be hard to beat again. (8) SUPERNATURAL had her colours lowered last start in a 72+. Back in grade and will charge late if they overcook it. (1) DESERT NYMPH is a wet-track specialist. If she gets a Soft 6 or worse, she will run well and can even test the first two.
