Over 500 killed around GHF aid distributions in Gaza: UN - War on Gaza
More than 500 Palestinians have been killed in the vicinity of the US- and Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation's (GHF) distribution sites since late May, the United Nations said on Friday. The GHF, presented as a private initiative, began operating on 26 May after Israel enforced a total blockade on all supplies into Gaza for more than two months, triggering warnings of famine. Since then, Israeli troops have repeatedly opened fire on Palestinians gathering near GHF aid sites. The UN said these incidents, along with Israeli attacks on humanitarian convoys, have resulted in hundreds of deaths. 'We have recorded 613 killings near GHF distribution points and near humanitarian convoys since the GHF began operations, until noon on 27 June,' UN human rights office spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani told reporters. 'Of the 613, 509 were killed near GHF distribution points,' she said. The rest were killed near UN and non-UN aid convoys. Shamdasani said the numbers are likely higher, as the UN continues to receive further reports of Israeli attacks it is working to corroborate. Call for investigation She added that Israel's refusal to grant access to Gaza was obstructing independent verification. 'It is clear that the Israeli military has shelled and shot at Palestinians trying to reach the distribution points,' Shamdasani said. 'How many killings? Who is responsible? We need an investigation. We need access. We need an independent inquiry, and we need accountability for these killings.' The UN and major humanitarian groups have refused to work with the GHF, warning that it was created to serve Israeli military interests and violates core humanitarian principles. Headquartered in Delaware, the GHF is chaired by Johnnie Moore, a Christian evangelical leader and ally of US President Donald Trump. On Thursday, the foundation claimed to have distributed over a million food boxes in Gaza. 'We have not had a single violent incident in our distribution sites. We haven't had a violent incident in close proximity to our distribution sites,' Moore told reporters in Brussels on Wednesday. That claim is contradicted by numerous eyewitness accounts and medical reports from Gaza. Rik Peeperkorn, the World Health Organization's representative in the occupied Palestinian territories, condemned the killings: 'The senseless killing in Gaza must stop.' After visiting Nasser Medical Complex this week, he described hospital corridors packed with wounded civilians. 'There are patients everywhere — on the floor, in the corridors,' he said. 'It's mainly boys, young adolescents, young men, and we all know that they go to these so-called safe, non-UN food distribution sites,' he added. 'There are so many of these cases shot in the head, shot in the neck, shot in the chest. *This story was edited by Ahram Online. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Trump says Hamas to respond within 24 hours to 'final' Gaza truce proposal - War on Gaza
US President Donald Trump said on Friday he expected Hamas to respond within 24 hours to what he described as his 'final proposal' for a ceasefire in Gaza. Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, Trump said: 'We'll know within the next 24 hours,' when asked whether Hamas had agreed to the deal. His remarks came two days after announcing that Israel had accepted a US-backed 60-day ceasefire proposal, pending Hamas's approval. Trump on Thursday said Gazans had 'been through hell,' while sidestepping a question about whether he still intended for the US to take control of the Strip — a reference to his earlier proposal to turn Gaza into a 'Mideast Riviera,' a plan that drew international condemnation. 'I want the people of Gaza to be safe,' he said. Hamas, which has repeatedly said it would only agree to a deal that permanently ends the war, confirmed it was reviewing the proposal. 'The movement is conducting consultations with leaders of Palestinian forces and factions regarding the proposal received... from the mediators,' it said early Friday. On Wednesday, the group signalled openness to a ceasefire but stopped short of accepting the US-backed plan, reaffirming its demand that any deal bring a permanent end to Israel's 21-month war on Gaza. Saudi outlet Asharq News reported that Hamas officials have shown 'flexibility' on the issue of disarmament, which Israel has demanded as a condition for a permanent ceasefire. According to the report, the group may agree — via mediators Qatar and Egypt — to halt weapons smuggling, shut down weapons manufacturing, and transfer existing arms to a location without Hamas presence. It could also accept the temporary exile of a symbolic number of officials from Gaza, in response to Israeli demands to remove the group's leadership from the territory. A Palestinian source familiar with the negotiations told AFP that the proposal includes a 60-day truce, during which Hamas would release half of the living Israeli captives in Gaza in exchange for Israel releasing Palestinian prisoners and detainees. The source said the terms do not differ significantly from earlier proposals. Israel's foreign minister, Gideon Saar, said this week that any chance to free the captives 'must not be missed.' Trump said a deal could come together as soon as next week. Israel's war on Gaza has killed more than 57,000 Palestinians since October 2023, with women and children making up the majority of the dead, according to Gaza's health ministry. Independent estimates indicate the actual toll is higher. Over the past 48 hours, Israeli forces have killed more than 300 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Government Media Office, which said Israel carried out '26 bloody massacres' during that period. Two previous ceasefires, brokered by Qatar, Egypt and the United States, led to brief halts in Israeli attacks and the exchange of Israeli captives for Palestinian prisoners. In a celebration of resilience, inspiration, and human connection, the main theatre of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation (NMEC) in Al-Fustat hosted the official launch of the global Hope Giver campaign, renewing commitment to spreading messages of hope and positivity from Egypt, the cradle of civilisation, to communities worldwide. The ceremony, organised by NMEC and the Egyptian Ministry of Youth and Sports, was an opportunity for guests to learn more about the Hope Giver campaign, founded by former international tennis champion Anwar El-Kamony. El-Tayeb Abbass, CEO of NMEC, with Mona Zaki, Hany El-Behairy and other guests. Attendees joining El-Kamony to mark the occasion included former Minister of Emigration and Head of the Technical Secretariat of the National Alliance for Civil Development Nabila Makram, Turkish Ambassador to Egypt Salih Mutlu Şen, Egyptian artist Safaa Abu El-Saoud, PR expert and novelist Mona Zaki, former Egyptian National Football team player Ahmed Hassan, fashion designer Hany El-Behairy, as well as ambassadors of the Hope Giver global campaign: Jérémy de Champris in Japan, Raoudha Zarrouk in Tunisia, Manuel Collas de la Roche in France, and Claudio Alessi in Switzerland. About "Hope Giver" The Hope Giver campaign was founded as a global movement dedicated to nurturing optimism, spotlighting human potential, and empowering communities through uplifting narratives and shared experiences. The international campaign seeks to inspire individuals and foster collective action for a better future through storytelling, community-driven events, and a celebration of perseverance, kindness, and human achievement. The launch gathering served as a dynamic platform for cross-cultural dialogue, storytelling, and the exchange of ideas aimed at strengthening intercultural ties and global unity. Through emotional speeches, inclusive performances by individuals with disabilities, personal testimonials, and the screening of a campaign film, participants from diverse backgrounds came together to reflect on shared human struggles and hopes. Live discussions and informal "story circles" created space for meaningful interaction and mutual understanding. Partnerships with esteemed Egyptian institutions such as NMEC and the Ministry of Youth and Sports reflect a powerful synergy, drawing on Egypt's rich cultural legacy as a beacon of enlightenment, innovation, and hope throughout history. Addressing the attendees, El-Tayeb Abbass, CEO of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC), emphasised the museum's enduring mission to promote the humanistic and cultural values embedded in Egyptian civilisation, commenting, "This launch represents a unique opportunity not only to explore our ancient history but also to project powerful messages of hope from the heart of Egypt to the world." "Nestled in the heart of Old Cairo, NMEC is one of Egypt's most important cultural landmarks, offering visitors a rare and comprehensive journey through over thousands of years of Egyptian history—from prehistoric times to the modern era. The museum is not only home to the world-famous Royal Mummies Hall, but also serves as a vibrant centre for learning, intercultural dialogue, and global engagement. Its exhibitions, educational programming, and public initiatives have made it a beloved institution for Egyptians and international visitors alike," he added. "As part of an ongoing journey, the Hope Giver launch is expected to inspire young people and future generations, showcasing how hope can serve as a powerful catalyst for building brighter, more inclusive futures," said El-Kamony. Turkish Ambassador Salih Mutlu Şen, former minister of Emigration Nabila Makram, with global Hope Giver campaign ambassadors. At the ceremony, Turkish Ambassador Şen commented, "I follow with great interest the 'Hope Giver' campaign, organised at NMEC, inspired by extraordinary stories born from the belief that with struggle and determination, solutions and remedies can surely be achieved. I appreciate the support provided by the Egyptian civil society and private sector, under the state's encouragement, through their strong tradition of solidarity and cooperation, to individuals' efforts to regain their physical and mental well-being. I congratulate Nabila Makram for taking on the presidency of the alliance of civil society organisations aimed at solidarity and development." Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:
