'Making these mistakes is a huge gap': Ashwin slams Shubman Gill's captaincy, blames him for potential series loss
Ravichandran Ashwin has criticised Shubman Gill's captaincy during the England Test series, blaming tactical mistakes for India's likely series loss. His comments come after Day 4 of the final Test, where Joe Root and Harry Brook dominated and took England closer to a record win. read more India are on the verge of losing the Test series in England, and veteran spinner R Ashwin believes one big reason is poor captaincy from Shubman Gill. Speaking on his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat', Ashwin didn't hold back as he pointed out some key mistakes India made, especially around how they used their bowlers. Ashwin said that India have shown a lack of game awareness in this series, especially with tactical decisions on the field. 'Coming back to the topic of spinners not being used, I have felt in this series that there has been a lack of game awareness and in many ways, our tactical acumen both on and off the field. This is the main reason why England are ahead in this series and India are behind. We haven't been the sharpest,' he said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Ashwin slams Gill for not using spinners properly He believes Gill will improve with time, but said that missing key moments in the match is costing the team. 'Sometimes if you feel you play spin well, you don't bring in your own spinners at the right time. And when that happens, spinners become a defensive option instead of an attacking one,' Ashwin explained. He gave a specific example from , when England batter Harry Brook was scoring freely. Ashwin said that was the moment to bring in Washington Sundar to slow down the runs. 'You could've had a spinner from one end and a fast bowler from the other. But we missed that chance,' he added. Ashwin blames the Indian team management Ashwin also said it's not clear whether these calls are made on the field or come from the team management. 'Making these mistakes is a huge gap. We don't know whether the message is going from outside to the middle. We don't know the dressing room talks. But in today's day and age, these mistakes can definitely be avoided,' he said. Ashwin's comments came after India showed some fight on Day 4 but still allowed England to come close to victory. Joe Root and Harry Brook both scored hundreds and stitched a massive 195-run partnership, taking the game away from India. Brook smashed 111 runs off 98 balls, while Root made 105. India did strike back after tea, with Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna picking up wickets and slowing the scoring. The match was paused due to bad light and rain, with England at 339/6, just 35 runs away from a record win.

The way Divya won the World Cup was really inspiring. It is not easy to win the tournament, you have to play regularly for a month. I have played the World Cup two times, so I know how difficult it is to win,' Gukesh said in a Velammal Nexus event that was organised to felicitate Mount Everest conqueror Ashish. 'Both of them (Divya and losing finalist, veteran Koneru Humpy) played amazingly well. For Indian chess, it is important that we have good results in both men (open) and women.' India can complete a WorldCup double when the global tournament is hosted in the country later this year. While chess world's governing body FIDE have announced the dates for the event – October 30 to November 27 – the host city is yet to be finalised. Poll Who do you think is the most inspiring figure in Indian chess currently? Divya Deshmukh Koneru Humpy Gukesh D R Praggnanandhaa 'For sure, I will take part in the World Cup. I am really excited and looking forward to it. In chess, we do not have many knockout events, so the World Cup is the biggest knockout tournament. After the Olympiad (in 2022), India hosting a big event is important for Indian chess,' added Gukesh, who will be gunning for his maiden WC trophy. 'Will play more classical chess in the rest of the year' After playing in just two classical tournaments – Tata Steel Chess in Wijk aan Zee and Norway Chess in Stavanger – in the first half of the year, Gukesh intends to compete in more standard events in the remaining part of 2025. On his form in the other formats, Gukesh said: 'My performances in rapid were good in Zagreb (he topped the chart in SuperUnited Rapid), but I need to correct my mistakes in blitz.'

The moment was enough to electrify the crowd. He stunning performance also earned a public message of praise from Los Angeles Lakers legend and part-owner of the Spirit, Magic Johnson. Trinity Rodman earns heartfelt praise from Lakers legend Magic Johnson On a thrilling evening in D.C., Rodman reminded fans why she's a generational talent. With just minutes left on the clock, she buried a decisive goal to give the Washington Spirit a 2–1 victory. For Trinity, it was a storybook return after injury kept her sidelined for weeks. Magic Johnson, who is part of the Spirit's ownership group, didn't hold back his excitement on X. He wrote, 'Welcome back superstar Trinity Rodman! Congratulations on scoring the game winning goal for our Washington Spirit in a 2-1 victory over the Portland Thorns. The entire National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) has missed you!' It wasn't the first time Johnson praised the young forward, but this moment carried added emotion. After all, Rodman's prowess in the game has become as much a part of her identity as her footwork and finishing. Trinity explained her relationship with her father, Dennis Rodman In an emotionally raw interview earlier this year on Call Her Daddy, she opened up about her strained relationship with her father, NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman. 'He's not a dad,' Trinity said. 'Maybe by blood, but nothing else. Hearing his voice is painful.' She described a childhood marked by instability, often living in a car with her mother, while her father's absence left emotional gaps. Even when Dennis Rodman showed up — like when he surprised her at her NWSL debut — the gestures felt more about control or spectacle than support. 'I answer the phone now for my conscience,' she added, 'to be like, he needed to hear my voice before anything else happens.'
