'Making these mistakes is a huge gap': Ashwin slams Shubman Gill's captaincy, blames him for potential series loss

Ravichandran Ashwin has criticised Shubman Gill's captaincy during the England Test series, blaming tactical mistakes for India's likely series loss. His comments come after Day 4 of the final Test, where Joe Root and Harry Brook dominated and took England closer to a record win. read more
India are on the verge of losing the Test series in England, and veteran spinner R Ashwin believes one big reason is poor captaincy from Shubman Gill. Speaking on his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat', Ashwin didn't hold back as he pointed out some key mistakes India made, especially around how they used their bowlers.
Ashwin said that India have shown a lack of game awareness in this series, especially with tactical decisions on the field. 'Coming back to the topic of spinners not being used, I have felt in this series that there has been a lack of game awareness and in many ways, our tactical acumen both on and off the field. This is the main reason why England are ahead in this series and India are behind. We haven't been the sharpest,' he said.

Ashwin slams Gill for not using spinners properly
He believes Gill will improve with time, but said that missing key moments in the match is costing the team. 'Sometimes if you feel you play spin well, you don't bring in your own spinners at the right time. And when that happens, spinners become a defensive option instead of an attacking one,' Ashwin explained.
He gave a specific example from , when England batter Harry Brook was scoring freely. Ashwin said that was the moment to bring in Washington Sundar to slow down the runs. 'You could've had a spinner from one end and a fast bowler from the other. But we missed that chance,' he added.
Ashwin blames the Indian team management
Ashwin also said it's not clear whether these calls are made on the field or come from the team management. 'Making these mistakes is a huge gap. We don't know whether the message is going from outside to the middle. We don't know the dressing room talks. But in today's day and age, these mistakes can definitely be avoided,' he said.
Ashwin's comments came after India showed some fight on Day 4 but still allowed England to come close to victory. Joe Root and Harry Brook both scored hundreds and stitched a massive 195-run partnership, taking the game away from India. Brook smashed 111 runs off 98 balls, while Root made 105.
India did strike back after tea, with Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna picking up wickets and slowing the scoring. The match was paused due to bad light and rain, with England at 339/6, just 35 runs away from a record win.

IOA athlete commission takes important steps towards making athlete-centric environment

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has moved towards getting substantial athletes representation in the governance of various sports. The IOA athlete commission held its meeting yesterday deliberating to create an athlete-centric enviornment in the apex sporting body of the Olympic movement. One of the key decisions to come out of the meeting is the establishment of a dedicated within the IOA, which will be staffed with professionals committed to addressing athlete needs. This department will play a pivotal role in ensuring that athletes have a structured channel for feedback and support. Another primary focus of the Commission was to ensure robust athlete representation in governance structure. To achieve this, each National Sports Federation will be requested to provide details of their Athletes Commission representatives. This will enable the IOA to establish a comprehensive framework for gathering feedback and insights from athletes across different sports disciplines and present the athletes' point of view through their official representatives. One of the major problem areas in Indian sports is the transition of the athletes to normal life after their sporting career is over. The IOA Commission proposed the development of an athlete career pathway that would provide opportunities in coaching, administration, and other fields beyond sports. To demonstrate its commitment, the IOA will hire two Olympian interns who will contribute to the initiatives and programs of the Athletes Commission. The financial framework for these initiatives was also a key point of discussion. The IOA Commission acknowledged the support of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), which provide $10,000 and $5,000 grants, respectively These funds will be instrumental in organizing a National Athletes Forum later this year, which will bring together representatives from each National Sports Federation to discuss athlete-centric issues and chart the future course of athlete engagement in India.

Should Be The Most Desperate Team: Not CSK, Aakash Chopra Feels This Team Will Go All Out To Get Sanju Samson In IPL 2026 Auctions

Former India opener Aakash Chopra has opined that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) might be the most desperate to acquire Sanju Samson if Rajasthan Royals (RR) release him before the IPL 2026 auction. He pointed out that KKR need an Indian wicketkeeper-batter and a potential captain, and could release Venkatesh Iyer to create enough budget space. "KKR don't have an Indian wicketkeeper-batter, and that just ties their hands behind their back. Secondly, what's wrong if you get a captain? I am not denying that Ajinkya Rahane has captained well and has scored runs as well," Chopra said. "However, Ajinkya Rahane as a batter, either he opens or else the batting order has been a bit of a problem. They have a player they can release as well. If they wish, they can release Venkatesh Iyer, free up nearly ₹24 crore, and then they can actually make a difference." Reports suggest Samson has asked RR to release him before the IPL 2026 auction. KKR didn't have a recognized Indian wicketkeeper-batter in IPL 2025, with Quinton de Kock and Rahmanullah Gurbaz performing that role. In a video on his YouTube channel, Chopra reckoned that KKR might be keener than even CSK to onboard Samson. He added, "One shouldn't be surprised at all if the Kerala player is acquired by the three-time champions if released by RR." Chopra also discussed RR's possible motivations, saying, 'When the last mega auction happened, they let Jos Buttler go and I felt they let Jos Buttler go because Yashasvi had come and Sanju wanted to open, and Sanju and Rajasthan Royals were really, really thick." He continued, "Vaibhav Suryavanshi has come, so two openers are already ready, and you also want to bat Dhruv Jurel up the order. So Sanju wishes to leave. If he is thinking like that, it's possible. These are conjectures. I don't know what's in his and Rajasthan's minds." Sanju Samson had aggregated 285 runs at a strike rate of 140.39 in nine innings during IPL 2025. Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashed 252 runs, including the fastest-ever IPL century by an Indian, at a strike rate of 206.55 in seven innings that season.
