BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man accused of driving drunk when his SUV collided with a car in east Bakersfield has pleaded no contest to a charge of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, according to court records.
Gabriel Coronel, 33, also pleaded no contest to DUI causing injury in connection with the fatal crash that occurred last year on Pioneer Drive east of Denison Lane, records show.
He faces seven years and eight months in prison, prosecutors said. A sentencing hearing is scheduled next month.
Early on Feb. 17, 2024, Coronel's Chevy Traverse collided with a Honda Accord.
The Honda had four occupants. Three were found unconscious by California Highway Patrol officers, according to court documents, including a woman in the front passenger seat who was later pronounced dead.
Coronel told investigators the Honda veered into his lane, but physical evidence revealed the westbound Chevy crossed the yellow line and collided with the eastbound Honda, according to the documents.
Breath tests revealed Coronel's blood-alcohol content at 0.12 and 0.13%, above the 0.08% legal limit, documents said.
The driver of the Honda was also intoxicated, documents said, and was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI charges.

Mexico's president condemns violence amid protests against ICE raids

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday denounced acts of violence linked to widespread demonstrations in Los Angeles against the Trump administration's immigration crackdown. Speaking during her regular morning news conference, Sheinbaum called for respect for legal processes in immigration enforcement and asked U.S. officials to uphold the rule of law. 'We condemn violence wherever it comes from,' Sheinbaum said, per Reuters. The protests erupted on Friday after Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted raids in the city and surrounding communities. Demonstrations were largely peaceful, but tensions flared Saturday and Sunday. Police have reported 42 arrests after Sunday's protests turned violent, including 19 by the California Highway Patrol, who were called to a demonstration that closed the 101 Freeway through DTLA for several hours. Local and state leaders, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, have criticized President Donald Trump's use of the National Guard in trying to quell anti-ICE immigration, saying the escalation in force has led and will only lead to further trouble. Newsom also announced plans to sue the Trump administration over the deployment. Trump also indicated that he would be willing to bring in the U.S. Marines if he deemed the situation warranted it. Salt Lake man charged for making plans to meet stranger and sexually abuse child, documents say

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah () — A Salt Lake City man has been arrested and charged after making plans to meet up with an online stranger — who was an undercover investigator — and abuse an 11-year-old child. Maclovio Coronel, 21, was charged with three felony counts of attempted sodomy on a child and one felony count of enticement of a minor. On June 5, 2025, documents say that a West Valley City Police officer who works with the FBI's Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force (CETF) used social media to pose as an adult who said they had 'sexual access to a child under 12 years old.' West Haven man charged for sending and receiving CSAM through social media, documents say The post said the man was 'looking for a possible third' person to join, and was not directed toward anyone in particular, documents say. Coronel responded quickly to the post and began conversing with the undercover officer, according to police. The conversation moved to a separate social media platform, where the undercover investigator said that they had 'access' to an 11-year-old family member. Coronel responded with interest and began making graphic sexual comments, and said that the two should 'hang out' sometime. The investigator asked if Coronel had any child sexual abuse material (CSAM), and Coronel responded that he had some from 'old groups,' according to documents. Coronel again asked to 'meet up' and made more graphic sexual comments about who he believed was an 11-year-old. Coronel and the undercover investigator made plans to meet up that day, June 5. According to documents, he was 'given multiple 'outs' throughout the conversation, meaning opportunities to disengage from criminal conduct.' Instead of disengaging, he continued plans to meet up, and even said he was 'begging' to. Cedar City man arrested for allegedly sending sexual photos to officer posing as 12-year-old Documents say that Coronel took a 40-minute train ride on Trax with a bicycle to meet up with the man he had met online. Only two and a half hours had elapsed between Coronel making contact with the investigator at 9 p.m. and his arrival at the meeting location at 11:26 p.m. CETF members surveilled the area and saw Coronel exit the train with a bike. When he arrived at the meeting location, he was taken into custody by investigators. The detective sent a message through the account, and Coronel's phone allegedly received a notification while they observed. 'Coronel's lack of concern for the child's safety, immediate willingness to travel to sexually abuse a child, and comments about begging to sexually abuse a child show that he is a substantial danger to any child in the community,' the arresting officer wrote in his probable cause statement. Coronel was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail and is currently being held without bail. He has an initial appearance before a judge on June 11. Union County reports two separate one-vehicle fatalities on Highway 34 last week

Jun. 9—A Clarinda man and an Osceola woman were killed in separate Union County one-vehicle accidents five days apart. According to a Union County Sheriff's report, in the early hours of Tuesday, June 3, a 1983 Honda motorcycle, driven by John Pace, 54, of Clarinda, was traveling eastbound on Highway 34 when it didn't navigate the turn properly. The motorcycle traveled into the north ditch of the highway where it came to a rest on its side and Pace was located on the ground south of the motorcycle. The accident was found around 4 a.m. by a driver of a semi who had seen the lights and turned around to check. Pace was deceased at the scene and has been taken for autopsy. The investigation is ongoing. On June 8, the Union County Sheriff's Office received numerous 911 calls at approximately 11:50 a.m. regarding a reckless driver who was all over the roadway eastbound on Highway 34 past Highway 169. As the vehicle was close to the Clarke County line and without a Union County deputy in the area, a call was transferred to Clarke County. Union County was then advised that the vehicle, a 2015 Chevrolet Traverse, driven by San Vega, 43, of Osceola, was involved in an accident at mile marker 102 in Union County where it went off the roadway, down an embankment and came to rest in the Grand River. The caller told Clarke County they were able to get the Traverse stopped on the side of the road. When they went to put the vehicle in park, it was instead put into reverse. Vega lost consciousness and lifted her foot off the brake, causing the vehicle to reverse down the hill. Witnesses were unable to stop the vehicle. A Clarke County deputy and first responders arrived on scene after the car went down the hill. They were able to get Vega out of the vehicle before it became fully submerged in the water. Vega was transported by an ATV from the water to the Clarke County ambulance to be transferred to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines where she was declared deceased. Medics reported to deputies they smelled alcohol on or around her person. The investigation is ongoing. This is the third vehicle fatality reported in Union County this year.
