One Week Before October 7, 2023, PFLP Official Khaled Barakat: The U.S. Is Enemy No. 1 Of The Palestinian People; It Is Important To Support The Palestinian Armed Struggle Against Israel And Its Allie
Barakat highlighted the role of Palestinian prisoner leadership, declaring that 'the prisoners of Hamas, the PFLP, the Islamic Jihad, and all the resistance movements in Palestine… are the true leaders of the Palestinian liberation movement.' He further stated, 'The Palestinian struggle has always been for liberation and return, not for a state.'
Barakat also stated that 'Palestinians are manufacturing 90% of their weapons, thanks to Iran, which has provided knowledge and support, and to people like [IRGC Qods Force Commander General] Qassem Soleimani.'
The Tribunal was hosted by the People's Forum, a New York-based socialist organization reportedly linked to the Chinese Communist Party, and was covered by Iranian state-run Press TV. The Tribunal steering committee was co-chaired by Nina Farnia, Professor of Law at Albany Law School, and Helyeh Doutaghi, former Deputy Director of the Law and Political Economy Project at Yale University. Khaled Barakat and his wife, Charlotte Kates, the International Coordinator of Samidoun, spoke at the event via video call.
Khaled Barakat is the founder of Samidoun and a leader of Masar Badil, an organization closely linked to Samidoun. He has been identified by the United States as a leader of the U.S.-designated terrorist organization the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), and Samidoun has been designated a U.S. Specially Designated Global Terrorist organization and a sham charity. A Canadian citizen, Barakat has been in Beirut, Lebanon, for several months following his designation as a terrorist by Canada in October 2024. Barakat's wife, Charlotte Kates, also in Beirut since February 9, 2025, has been arrested and investigated by Canadian authorities for hate speech in support of U.S. and Canada-designated terrorist organizations.
Khaled Barakat: "The U.S. is the enemy number 1 of the Palestinian people, and they initiate all of these war crimes.
[...]
"It wasn't the Lebanese government that was able to push Israel back, and to have the U.S. push back. It was the Lebanese resistance. And they did this by force – by weapons, by drones, by missiles, and by threatening to go into war. The same exact thing happened in Gaza.
[...]
"Tel Aviv will not listen to Palestinians unless it is hit by missiles. Only when Palestinians throw missiles at Tel Aviv, and those Israeli settlers, who are enjoying our shores and beautiful sands, go to their homes and to their refuge underground, Israel will not lose any kind of... In fact, they use the term 'tighten the noose on Gaza's neck.' And the only time they back off is when the Palestinian resistance shows force.
[...]
"These are for us the true leaders, and the trusted leaders of the Palestinian liberation movement. It is the prisoners of Hamas, the PFLP, and the Islamic Jihad, and all the resistance movements in Palestine. These prisoners in Israeli jails are the true leaders of the Palestinian liberation movement.
[...]
"The Palestinian struggle has always been for liberation and return, and not for a state.
[...]
"It is important to support the Palestinian people's armed struggle against Israel and against Israel's allies. The Palestinian people's armed resistance is a legitimate resistance.
[...]
"Now Palestinians are manufacturing 90% of their weapons, thanks to Iran, who provided us with the knowledge and the support, and thanks to people like the martyr Qassem Soleimani.
[...]
"Israel is doomed to fail. This Zionist racist colonial regime will fall apart.
[...]
"It is going to be a very tough battle for liberation, and a very painful process for liberation, but our people are going to be victorious."

Gideon's Chariots II: 80,000 reservists mobilize for new Gaza offensive
Shafaq News – Middle East Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has approved a new Gaza City offensive plan, with tens of thousands of reservists set for mobilization, local media reported on Wednesday. According to Channel 12, the campaign, named 'Gideon's Chariots II,' involves about 60,000 emergency call-up orders alongside an extension of service for 20,000 reservists already in uniform, bringing total manpower to roughly 80,000 troops. As part of the plan, 'the army will transfer civilians from combat zones in Gaza to the southern part of the enclave before advancing.' While Israeli authorities described the move as necessary ''to dismantle Hamas,'' critics warned it could complicate hostage negotiations and heighten domestic tensions. Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak, who led Israel between 1999 and 2001, cautioned that the offensive would hand Hamas a political victory and endanger captives. 'Occupying Gaza is a deadly trap,' he warned. 'It means we will not bring the hostages back; they will be killed during the operation.' כיבוש עזה הוא "מלכודת מוות" שתשרת את חמאס ותהפוך את תבוסתו לניצחון מדיני — אהוד ברק (@barak_ehud) August 20, 2025 Moreover, families of the remaining hostages urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to pursue a ceasefire deal for the release of roughly 50 captives. 'Everyone knows conditions are ripe for a deal, and it is in your hands,' the Hostages and Missing Families Forum stated, emphasizing that Israelis want the hostages returned rather than further reports of soldiers being killed. Mediators are also pressing for a 60-day truce, including phased prisoner exchanges and wider humanitarian access. Earlier, Israel's public broadcaster, citing an official from the Prime Minister's office, reported that Netanyahu rejected the proposal, 'which Hamas had accepted.' The war, now in its 22nd month, has drawn mounting international criticism. Gaza's Health Ministry reported 62,064 Palestinians killed and 156,573 wounded since October 7, 2023.

Australia responds to Netanyahu after 'weak' jibe at PM
Shafaq News – Canberra On Wednesday, Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke dismissed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's attack on counterpart Anthony Albanese, saying strength is not measured by 'killing people.' Netanyahu had earlier branded Albanese a 'weak politician' who betrayed Israel and abandoned Australia's Jewish community, after Canberra announced it would recognize a Palestinian state. Speaking to ABC Radio National, Burke argued that Albanese showed strength by informing Netanyahu of the decision directly before making it public, allowing objections to be voiced 'person to person," while the Israeli PM 'lashed out' at governments recognizing Palestine. Ties between the two allies have soured over the Gaza war, worsening after Australia recognized Palestine last week. The dispute further intensified on August 18 when Canberra cancelled the visa of Simcha Rothman, a far-right Israeli lawmaker, citing concerns his tour aimed to 'spread division.' Hours later, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar revoked visas for Australian diplomats accredited to the Palestinian Authority. Israel continues to face mounting criticism from international partners over the humanitarian toll of the Gaza war, which has killed 62,064 and wounded 156,573 since October 7, 2023, according to Gaza's Health Ministry.

Lebanese politicians seek legal action against Hezbollah's Secretary-General
Shafaq News – Beirut A group of Lebanese lawmakers and political figures announced on Tuesday their intention to file a legal complaint against Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem, accusing him of inciting 'sectarian strife and threatening civil war.' The group, representing the "Sovereign Front" — a group of US and Saudi allied parties and politicians — stated in a joint declaration that Qassem's recent statements come at a 'critical moment in Lebanon's history,' as efforts are underway to curb the proliferation of illegal weapons allegedly backed by Iran. The statement warned that remaining silent in the face of what it described as 'the actions of Qassem and his armed organization' could endanger Lebanese citizens. Qassem, in his latest speech, accused the Lebanese government of 'carrying out the American-Israeli agenda to dismantle the resistance, even at the cost of civil war and internal strife.' He added that Hezbollah would not surrender its weapons 'as long as occupation and aggression persist,' placing full responsibility for any potential conflict on the government. 'We do not seek strife,' he said, 'but others are working toward it.'
