Maharaj reclaims No. 1 position in ICC Men's ODI Bowling Rankings
South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj has regained the top position in the ICC Men's ODI Bowling Rankings after helping his team beat Australia by 98 runs in the first ODI of their three-match series in Cairns. The 35-year-old left-arm spinner, who was named Player of the Match after grabbing five for 33, overtook Kuldeep Yadav and Maheesh Theekshana to the top spot, which he had earlier held briefly in November and December 2023. West Indies fast bowler Jayden Seales was another one to make huge inroads in the ODI Bowling Rankings after his superb haul of six for 18 in the final ODI of their three-match series against Pakistan, moving up 15 spots to 18th position. Pakistan leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed (up 15 places to joint-39th) and West Indies off-spinner Roston Chase (up five places to 58th) are others to move up the list. In the Men's ODI Batting Rankings, West Indies captain Shai Hope is up two places to ninth position after scoring 120 not out in the final ODI against Pakistan while Aiden Markram (up four places to 21st), Temba Bavuma (up five places to 23rd) and Mitchell Marsh (up six places to 48th) are the others to progress. In the Men's T20I Rankings, South Africa's Dewald Brevis continues his upward movement, gaining nine spots to reach 12th position while Australians Marsh and Glenn Maxwell have progressed four and 10 spots, respectively, to reach 25th and 30th positions. The T20I Bowling Rankings see Australia seamers Nathan Ellis (up three places to ninth position) and Josh Hazlewood (up two places to 18th) make significant gains, with South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada moving up from 44th to 37th position.

Magical Maharaj guides South Africa to big win over Australia
Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj produced a career-best 5-33 to dismantle Australia and bowl South Africa to an emphatic 98-run victory in the opening one day international in Cairns on Tuesday. Home captain Mitchell Marsh made a defiant 88 but Australia, chasing 297 for victory, could never recover from the Maharaj-inflicted blows and were bundled out for 198 inside 41 overs. Put into bat, South Africa posted 296-8 after Aiden Markram, Matthew Breetzke and skipper Temba Bavuma produced half-centuries. Travis Head was pick of the Australia bowlers claiming 4-57 but Maharaja proved nearly unplayable when the hosts returned to bat. "I made my debut in 2016 in Australia. So it's a wonderful opportunity to get my first five-for here," Maharaj said after collecting the player of the match award. "I just tried to utilise the condition. The wicket was a little bit sticky with the new ball. I just tried to utilise that and got the reward." South Africa got off to a strong start after Markram (82) added 92 runs for the opening stand with Ryan Rickelton, who made 33. Rickelton got an lbw decision against him reversed but was dismissed by Head, while Markram fell near the halfway stage of their innings. Bavuma (65) and Breetzke (57) combined in a 92-run stand, though South Africa fell short of the 300-mark. When Australia began their chase, Head hit Nandre Burger for five fours in an over as the hosts reached the 50-mark in five overs. South Africa struck back with spin and once Prenelan Subrayen dismissed Head, Maharaj turned the game on its head claiming five wickets in 26 deliveries. Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey were trapped lbw, Cameron Green and Aaron Hardie had their off-stumps knocked back while Josh Inglis had his defence breached as Australia slumped to 89-6. With wickets tumbling at the other end, Marsh, who hit 10 fours, had to temper his natural aggression. Ben Dwarshuis contributed 33 down the order but it was of little significance. The teams move to Mackay for the second ODI of the three-match series on Friday. Australia prevailed 2-1 in the preceding T20 series between the sides.
