Notting Hill keeps giving London diners reasons to come back and feast.
The neighborhood, internationally famous for its annual carnival, Portobello Road antiques market and that eponymous movie, has more recently become known as one of the city's top dining areas. That's thanks to a slew of openings including, most recently, the country-stylish Fat Badger pub and Jackson Boxer's neighborhood spot, Dove. One of the early attention-grabbing restaurants among this latest wave is Dorian; its reputation for modern bistro-forward fare and an expansive wine list has morphed into a zeitgeist-defining, perennially packed Beckham hangout.
Now, the duo behind Dorian, Chris D'Sylva and chef Max Coen, are following a different formula. Their newest spot is Eel Sushi Bar, located right across the street from their starry freewheeling bistro. The 12-seat counter (with six more spots outdoors) is using a high turnover formula— seatings are one hour—to accommodate both reservations and walk-ins from noon until 10 p.m. And the restaurant is already filling a sizeable gap in London's mid price sushi scene.

Amal Clooney spoke about how much she and husband George Clooney value privacy for their family while navigating life in the spotlight. In a rare and intimate interview, the human rights activist, 47, opened up about the delicate balance they've struck between global fame and preserving their personal world, especially when it comes to their kids. 'Creating private moments and spaces is becoming increasingly difficult,' Amal told Glamour in an article published on Thursday, July 3, revealing that it's led her to set rules when it comes to entertaining guests in the comfort of her abode. 'I now have a phone basket that I use to take everyone's phones away!' 'It's important to get that balance where you have time alone with your family and with your friends where people feel like you can have a safe and frank exchange,' she added. 'And I would say becoming a parent means you're more troubled by some of the intrusions.' As for why Amal and George, 64, don't share photos of their 8-year-old twins — Ella and Alexander — she said they have their reasons. 'We do the best we can to minimize any impact on our children. We don't put our children out there, we've never put their photo out there or anything like that,' the lawyer explained. The power couple welcomed their twins on June 6, 2017, at St. Mary's Hospital in London, nearly three years after exchanging their vows in Italy. Amal said that her passion for mentorship is something she would like to ingrain in her children. 'Thinking back to my days at Oxford — that's where I studied law — and now being back there two decades later, has made me reflect that I wasn't remotely as engaged with the world, as knowledgeable about the world, as this generation is,' Amal said. 'The people I'm meeting now are not only unsatisfied with the status quo, they are determined to be agents of change. It's invigorating to be around them. They ask really good and sometimes difficult questions. I love seeing that sort of curiosity,' the mom of two went on. 'It's something that we're trying to instill in our kids.' Amal credited George with helping her to stay motivated and empowered to chase after her goals. 'I have a partner in life who is so supportive of what I do,' she continued. The Right to a Fair Trial in International Law author also discussed her meaningful philanthropic work shortly after visiting Buckingham Palace to support The King's Trust. 'And I remember when I became a mom, which was obviously a new frontier, he was the first one to say, 'I know you've got this speech at the Security Council. You have to go, I've got the kids, don't worry about it.' I feel so incredibly lucky to share every day with him,' she said of George. 'And now we're four. And I don't take any of it for granted,' Amal gushed. 'I treasure the laughter and the joy that I get from just being with them.'

'Nobu' strains to showcase a humble man at the center of a sexy global brand

It takes a little over an hour for 'Nobu' to marinate long enough to approach a point of complexity, not exactly bitter but no longer cloyingly sweet. Nobu Matsuhisa, the celebrated sushi master, is running quality-control checks in one of his restaurants. A poor chef is sweating the test so badly, he won't need soy sauce soon enough. His dish keeps being sent back: Chop the chives finer. Why is this pile of raw crudo smaller? Why did you paint a line of salt instead of a dot? The scene goes on, excruciatingly. A few minutes later, Robert De Niro — an early investor and co-founder — dominates a private board meeting with concerns about too-rapid growth. It's not quite the ominous Waingro showdowns of 'Heat' but in the ballpark. Fastidiousness, precision and a kind of reputational exclusivity are at the heart of Matsuhisa's enterprise. These are hard things to make a documentary about. But it's also why Nobu needed to come to Beverly Hills for his concept take root — not just any Los Angeles but the '80s-era boomtown of power lunches and spend-to-impress dining. Spago's Wolfgang Puck makes an appearance in director Matt Tyrnauer's half-interesting film, fawning over his longtime friend sitting next to him but not quite articulating the essence of their revolution: high-end branding. You wish more time was spent on that conceptual idea, enabled by celebrities throwing around money on food they barely ate. The kind of doc that 'Nobu' more often resembles (as do most foodie-targeted profiles) is a gentle chronology of a humble genius and everyday guy who just happens to fly private. Matsuhisa bows to euphoric local fishmongers, does a lot of hugs and selfies with his staff, visits his roots in Japan and Peru. There are family interviews and a detour to Alaska, where, years before he had a 300-person nightly waitlist, an early restaurant of his caught fire — in the bad literal way (Tyrnauer cuts to the Anchorage newspaper headline). These false starts are somehow exhausting, lacking in suspense. He contemplated suicide, then came to California. Read more: Sushi and be seen at Nobu The food sails by: wedges of black cod with miso, delicate plates of thinly sliced fish adorned with tweezer-manipulated herbs. All of it is crazy-making and delicious. Still, apart from former Los Angeles Times food editor Ruth Reichl, who witnessed the rise of Nobu as it happened, there are few on-camera voices who speak directly to Matsuhisa's gifts and experimentation with form. 2011's 'Jiro Dreams of Sushi' does a better job of delivering the intimate discipline of cutting and shaping. More testimony to the experience of eating at Nobu would have helped this feel less like a commercial. 'Nobu' is a film oddly unconcerned with the communal experience of dining. We hear about the way his sushi workstations are elevated (a 'stage,' Matsuhisa calls them) and that's central to the performance going on here, also the remove. Something clicks when the film heads to Nobu Malibu and visits the table of supermodel Cindy Crawford, whose 'Cindy rice,' a dish he invented for her, adorns the menu. There's a deep mutual gratitude between them that goes back years. An appreciation of the finer things? No doubt. Game recognizing game? Definitely. It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's the Superman fan event in London! The team behind the upcoming DC Studios movie stopped by London for a fan event last night, ahead of the film's official world premiere in LA next week. Fans dressed up as Superman and various other DCU characters descended on London's Leicester Square and competed for Superman-themed prizes. Deadline was on the red carpet and spoke to the Superman writer, director and producer James Gunn and stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult.
