Ahmad Zahid: Malaysia should leverage Asean chairmanship to expand halal market

The Star12-05-2025
BUTTERWORTH: Malaysia should seize the opportunity of its Asean Chairmanship in 2025 to expand the market for halal products and penetrate the Asean market, which comprises a population of 600 million, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamid.
He said that although halal products from Indonesia and Thailand are marketed in Malaysia, local halal products have yet to penetrate the Asean market due to insufficient marketing efforts.
"Since 600 million is a realistically large market for Malaysian halal products, the efforts by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) are geared towards expanding the market among Asean countries," he said.
He was speaking to reporters after launching the Penang Halal Industry Development Council here on Monday (May 19), which was also attended by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) Chairman Datuk Seri Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Malaysian Halal Industry Development Council chairman, proposed the establishment of an Asean Halal Council and the organisation of an Asean Halal Forum this September.
He said the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) will also feature halal products and invite Asean industry players for 'business matching' with potential importers.
In addition, he said Malaysia is also collaborating to expand the production of halal gelatine-which currently has only one producer in the country-for both Asean and international markets, as existing gelatine products lack the proper standards required for other halal products.
"This includes sectors such as medicine, cosmetics, and others, because we tend to focus only on the food and beverage (F&B) service sector, when in fact, other sectors hold vast market potential and should be further developed," he said.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid noted that Malaysia possesses a comprehensive halal ecosystem, including halal certification recognised by 92 foreign halal certification bodies from 48 countries.
At the same time, he congratulated Penang for becoming the first state in Malaysia to establish a Halal Industry Development Council.
Malaysia continues to lead the global halal industry, recording exports valued at RM61.79bil in 2024, a 15% increase from 2023, and maintaining the number one position in the Global Islamic Economy Index for ten consecutive years. – Bernama

Luxury properties thrive as affordability sinks

Picture an average Malaysian drowning in bills and rising costs, yet a simple glance at the Kuala Lumpur skyline reveals cranes gleaming hard at work, building brand-new, dazzling condominiums with million-ringgit price tags. Malaysia has a real estate paradox and it does not get more obvious than that. While an affordability crisis deepens for ordinary citizens, the high-end property sector continues to thrive. This contradiction raises questions about what drives such a phenomenon.

MOF: Tax Break On Rentals To Boost Competitiveness, Avoid Overseas Shift

The Finance Ministry (MOF) clarified that the service tax exemption on ship and aircraft rentals was introduced to protect Malaysia's competitiveness and prevent capital flight. In a statement, MOF said imposing the tax risked pushing local ship and aircraft owners to register abroad, reducing Malaysia's share of economic and tourism-related activity. At the same time, it noted that neighbouring countries do not impose such levies, meaning Malaysian operators could lose out to foreign competitors without the exemption. 'This exemption is targeted at the aviation and maritime sectors, which are vital to the supply chain, tourism and the national economy. It does not apply to other rentals such as cars, buses or premises,' MOF said, while emphasising that the tax exemption was not done through any 'silent' move. The ministry highlighted that the policy was officially communicated through Service Tax Policy No 2/2025 (Amendment No. 1), uploaded to the MySST portal on July 24, 2025.

Pahang launches Malaysia's first prebiotic rice for better health

TEMERLOH: Pahang has made history as the first Malaysian state to produce prebiotic rice, branded as Beras Pahang. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail highlighted its unique health advantages. 'Beras Pahang has its uniqueness. It is a prebiotic rice, low in sugar, and suitable for those with diabetes.' Currently, the rice is sold in limited quantities, with Pahang residents getting priority access. Grown in Pekan's Ganchong fields, it boasts enhanced taste, fragrance, and softness while aiding digestion. Priced at RM8 per kg, it was launched at Pahang Mini MAHA 2025 in Dataran Temerloh. The event drew over 80,000 visitors, prompting plans to rotate its location annually. Wan Rosdy cited Pahang's RM25.12 billion agriculture sector contribution, second only to Johor. Crops dominated with 88% of sales, led by palm oil (RM14.18 billion) and Cameron Highlands vegetables (RM3.6 billion). Musang King durian earned RM2.42 billion, reinforcing its global appeal. Pahang also leads in fresh milk production, with 9.05 million litres worth RM47.25 million. The state is expanding into premium livestock, including wagyu cattle, to boost high-value agriculture. - Bernama
