Killer Nkuna charged again with Hillary Gardee's murder
Nkuna is accused of killing Gardee, 28, in 2022. Charges against Nkuna and three others were provisionally withdrawn in the Mpumalanga High Court in April 2023.
The state prosecutor said at the time the trial could not go ahead because three key witnesses, including a sangoma who claimed one of the accused in the murder case had consulted him for cleansing, could not be traced.
Mpumalanga NPA spokesperson Monica Nyuswa on Monday confirmed to Sowetan that Nkuna had been charged with Gardee's murder again.
'Nkuna appeared in separate courts today [Monday] in the Nelspruit magistrate's court. He first appeared in the district court where he is charged with possession of a firearm. I don't have background information [on this matter].
'He then appeared again in the regional court for the murder of [Godrich] Gardee's daughter. That matter is postponed to October for trial in the high court,' said Nyuswa.
She had not, at the time of going to print, responded to further questions about whether the state had been able to trace the witnesses or if there was new evidence in the case.

'Masterminds' who planned hit on DA's Nhlalayenza Ndlovu from prison arrested
Two alleged masterminds behind the December 2023 assassination of Umngeni local municipality DA councillor and chief whip Nhlalayenza Ndlovu are expected to appear in the Howick magistrate's court on Thursday. Police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe said the political killings task team arrested a 56-year-old inkosi and a 26-year-old man, who allegedly co-ordinated the murder of the councillor from Pietermaritzburg prison. Ndlovu was shot dead outside his home, in front of his wife, two children and a nanny. His family have since abandoned the home outside eMpophomeni. DA provincial leader Francois Rodgers said the DA had commissioned a forensic investigation last year which identified Buthelezi as one of the conspirators in Ndlovu's killing. Case dropped against Mduduzi Mnisi for Likhona Fose murder
The prosecution has dropped the case against murder accused Mduduzi Trevor Mnisi, who protested his innocence by telling police to pull his cellphone records to show his movements. He had been arrested for the murder of 14-year-old Likhona Fose two months ago. The Roodepoort magistrate's court previously heard Mnisi was allegedly linked to the crime through the statement of only one witness, who allegedly last saw the child alive with Mnisi. The witness was later described as uncooperative for failing to liaise with the investigating officer and prosecutor. Fose's mutilated body was discovered in a field in Durban Deep, Roodepoort, on June 1, a day after she went missing. Mnisi was released on parole in December 2018 after he was sentenced to 18 years' imprisonment for attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. During his bail application, Mnisi said he did not know the teenager. He testified he was with friends and had visited his girlfriend, who went to court to confirm this.
