Former traffic cop who shot dead wife's boyfriend sentenced to 12 years

The Mpumalanga high court on Tuesday sentenced former traffic officer Abednego Desmond Mbuyane to 12 years' imprisonment for housebreaking and murdering his wife's boyfriend, Thamsanqa Sbusiso Nkosi. The conviction of Mbuyane, 39, relates to an incident on April 15 2023 at Kwanyoni Lodge in Nelspruit. 'T he accused became suspicious of his wife's whereabouts after multiple unanswered phone calls. He tracked the vehicle she was driving using a GPS tracking device, which led him to the lodge,' National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said. Upon arrival, he identified the room where the vehicle was parked. He forcibly entered by kicking the door open and found his wife and the deceased. 'An altercation ensued, prompting the wife and Nkosi to flee the room. The accused pursued the deceased and fatally shot him in the head and shoulder before fleeing the scene.' Mbuyane later handed himself over to police. In sentencing, the court considered that the accused had been in custody since his arrest. He was sentenced to five years' imprisonment for housebreaking and 12 years' imprisonment for murder. The sentences will run concurrently, resulting in an effective sentence of 12 years' imprisonment. TimesLIVE

Not being rugby savvy cost EP, says Toetie

'EP had a lot of disruptions in the week leading up to the game, but I don't want to make an excuse for that. 'We had a centre, a left-wing and flyhalf out, so it meant a complete reshuffle in the backline. 'Some players need to pick up and gain more experience, and that is a big thing for us. 'I'm happy with the boys who came in because this is how they grow and gain experience. 'This is how EP are broadening their depth.' Thanks to their win in Gqeberha, Boland will travel to Nelspruit for a SA Cup semifinal against the Pumas, who finished top of the log. In the other semifinal, defending champions Griquas are at home against the Cheetahs. The Bolanders edged the Falcons into fourth spot after their bonus-point win at the Madibaz Stadium. Playing at home in Kimberley, Griquas scored two late tries for an exciting 31-29 win over the Cheetahs, and the unbeaten Pumas halted the Griffons' qualification bid with a 48-7 victory. The Pumas finished the league phase with a full house of 45 points after nine rounds, with Griquas second on 42 points. The top two were followed by the Cheetahs (34 points), Boland (32), Falcons (30), Griffons (26), EP Elephants (21), Leopards (10), SWD (8) and Border (3). The outcome of Saturday's clashes means the Pumas, Griquas, Cheetahs and Boland have booked their places in the 2025 Currie Cup Premier Division alongside the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Western Province. The Currie Cup Premier Division kicks off on July 26, and the final will be on September 20. In photos: Nelspruit victorious in exciting match against Barberton Barberton and Nelspruit rugby clubs clashed in an Ehlanzeni Premier League match at Coronation Park on Saturday, April 26. The match was a thriller, with Nelspruit's fitness pulling them through, 38-26. Nelspruit had the better of the first half, running in four tries to host Barberton's two, for a 26-14 half-time lead. Barberton played well in patches in the first half, but were not clinical in executing their game plan. Nelspruit stuck to the basics and the rest fell into place. Their set pieces were solid and secured them the majority of possession. It is not known what advice was given to the Barberton team at half-time, but it worked. They came out snorting fire, raised their game and were far more disciplined in the second half. Nelspruit fought back with ferocity and Barberton simply could not maintain the pace at which they started the second half. Two more tries gave the team from Nelspruit a well-deserved victory. The visitors were fitter and ended the match stronger. Barberton showed glimpses of brilliance but were simply the weaker team on the day.
