Malcolm-Jamal Warner carried a heavy load for Black America

There were three television characters who really mattered to me as a kid: Michael, Leroy and Theo.
In elementary school, 'Good Times' was the television show that most closely resembled my family. And seeing reruns of Ralph David Carter's portrayal of a precocious young boy learning what it means to be poor, gifted and Black is what moved his Michael from fiction to family for me.
By middle school, I was no longer wearing cornrows like Gene Anthony Ray, but I tried everything else to be like his character Leroy from the television show 'Fame.' For some of my classmates, the performing arts were a fun way to express themselves, and the show was inspirational. For me, it was my way out of the hood, and Leroy was the blueprint. Through the Detroit-Windsor Dance Academy, I was able to take professional dance lessons for free and ultimately earned a dance scholarship for college.
But it wasn't a linear journey. Despite being gifted, I struggled academically and required summer classes to graduate from high school. That's why I connected with Theo, whose challenges in the classroom were one of the running jokes on 'The Cosby Show.' The family never gave up on him, and more importantly, he didn't stop trying.
Through the jokes about his intelligence, the coming-of-age miscues (and the dyslexia diagnosis), the storylines of Theo — like those of Leroy and Michael — often reflected struggles I foolishly thought no one else was experiencing when I was growing up. It is only through distance and time are we able to see moments like those more clearly. In retrospect, the three of them were like knots I held onto on a rope I had no idea I was climbing.
This is why the Black community's response to the death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner this week isn't solely rooted in nostalgia but also in gratitude. We recognize the burden he's been carrying, so that others could climb.
When 'The Cosby Show' debuted in 1984, there were no other examples of a successful two-parent Black family on air. We were on television but often trauma and struggle — not love and support — were at the center of the narratives. So even though Black women had been earning law degrees since the 1800s — beginning with Charlotte E. Ray in 1872 — and Black men were becoming doctors before that, the initial response from critics was that the show's premise of a doctor-and-lawyer Black couple was not authentically Black.
That narrow-minded worldview continued to hang over Hollywood despite the show's success. In 1992, after nearly 10 years of 'The Cosby Show' being No. 1 — and after the success of 'Beverly Hills Cop II' and 'Coming to America' — the Eddie Murphy-led project 'Boomerang' was panned as unrealistic because the main characters were all Black and successful. The great Murphy took on the Los Angeles Times directly in a letter for its critique on what Black excellence should look like.
However, Black characters like Michael, Leroy and Theo had been taking on the media since the racist film 'The Birth of a Nation' painted all of us as threats in 1915. It could not have been easy for Warner, being the face of so much for so many at an age when a person is trying to figure out who he is. And because he was able to do so with such grace, Warner's Theo defined Blackness simply by being what the world said we were not. This sentiment is embodied in his last interview, when he answered the question of his legacy by saying: 'I will be able to leave this Earth knowing and people knowing that I was a good person.'
In the end, that is ultimately what made his character, along with Leroy and Michael, so important to the Black community. It wasn't the economic circumstances or family structure of the sitcoms that they all had in common. It was their refusal to allow the ugliness of this world to tear them down. To change their hearts or turn their light into darkness. They maintained their humanity and in the process gave so many of us a foothold to keep climbing higher.

WWE Raw Results, Winners And Grades On July 28, 2025

An eight-woman all-star tag team match advertised for WWE Raw. WWE Raw advertised a main event of Jey Uso vs. Bronson Reed, an Eight-Woman All-Star tag team match, the Judgment Day vs. LWO and an appearance by the Tribal Chief Roman Reigns. WWE Raw Results On July 28, 2025 WWE Raw Ticket Sales WWE Raw Highlights, Winners And Grades Hulk Hogan Tribute, Paul Heyman And Jey Uso Face Off During a 10-bell salute, and after a new Hulk Hogan tribute, Nick Hogan was front-and-center on the Raw stage as Hogan got another rousing ovation. Corey Graves had the best Yeet pun for a city, calling Detroit 'Yeetroit Rock City.' Paul Heyman cut a long promo about how family cannot be trusted because they all lie. Unless, of course, that family is part of his Jewish tribe. The most egregious thing that Heyman did in this segment was interrupt Jey Uso's Yeet encore. Jey Uso fired back at Heyman by reminding him of all the people he proved wrong to win the world title. Jey blamed Heyman's goons for costing him the world title, but he actually lost that match clean. AJ Styles And The Kabuki Warriors Def. The Judgment Day Michael Cole has gone into overdrive while talking about Dominik Mysterio's cheating ways. He's talking like Mysterio already abandoned Liv Morgan, calling Dominik 'Romeo' to Roxanne's 'Juliet.' AJ and Kairi Sane had a great spot where he vaulted her to the outside, landing a perfect flying elbow on Raquel Rodriguez. Styles won the match with a Phenomenal Forearm and a clean pin on Dom. Does this mean Dominik Mysterio retains at SummerSlam? Sheamus Def. Grayson Waller Grayson Waller's alliance with the New Day and his split with Austin Theory both have one thing in common: They both went unexplained. Sheamus beat Waller despite outside interference from Rusev, but Rusev immediately got the better of Sheamus with help from a Shillelagh. Rusev got a lot of heat for raining on Sheamus' parade, and their rubber match is setting up to be 'Shillelagh on a Pole.' Lyra Valkyria Faces Off With Becky Lynch Lyra screwed up her opening line in reference to SummerSlam by saying '…in two weeks…" Fans are still booing Lyra and treating Becky Lynch as the babyface. They are also giving Valkyria the 'What' treatment. WWE really needs to rethink Bayley's seemingly inevitable heel turn. Becky Lynch hit the ring, but Lyra absconded her kendo stick. Lyra beat the hell out of Lunch with the stick to a mixture of cheers and boos, and Becky ran off. Backstage, Karrion Kross added a stipulation to his SummerSlam match against Sami Zayn. If Kross wins, Sami has to say 'Kross told the truth.' Kross is WWE's Brian Pillman, and this is his version of 'I respect you, booker man!' Babyfaces Win Eight Woman All-Star Tag Team Match Nikki Bella took a beating to start this match, including a sick bottom-rope elbow drop from Piper Niven. Surprisingly, this match outlasted the entrances. Of course, fans exploded when Vaquer went for the Devil's Kiss, but the married and vanilla announce team refused to participate in counting along. I miss Booker T. Nikki Bella and Iyo Sky performed Iyo's signature taunt to a huge reaction. They were both taken out by Piper Niven, who mocked Iyo's taunt. Niven took a Riptide for her troubles. Vaquer hit cleanup by hitting an SVB on Chelsea Green for the win. The Judgment Day Vs. LWO Cruz Del Toro lit this match on fire with a coast-to-coast on JD McDonagh while McDonagh was hanging upside down. Fans chanted 'This is awesome!' One of these days, the LWO's crowd reactions will catch up to their talent. Part of that equation is telling their story and giving fans a reason to care. El Extra Grande Americano distracted the referee, only to be attacked byDragon Lee. A second El Grande Americano (in a sweatsuit) crotched Del Toro, costing him the Tag Team Titles. The streets say this new masked man is Pete Dunne. CM Punk Confronts Gunther Fans chanted 'CM Punk' over Gunther's entire promo as he bragged about getting a clean win over Punk in a promo. Punk interrupted, saying he wasn't speechless but he was dumbfounded. Punk doesn't want to be world heavyweight champion, he needs to be world heavyweight champion. Punk worked Detroit into a froth talking about how much he needs to be world champion. Punk said he doesn't deserve to call himself the best in the world, he earned that right. Punk, who stifled Gunther's attempt at an interruption, said Gunther would feel what it's like to be in the ring with the best in the world. Now Gunther was dumbfounded. Jey Uso Def. Bronson Reed By DQ Seth Rollins name was bandied about throughout Raw, both by Paul Heyman and then multiple times by the announce team during this match. The main event ended prematurely when Bron Breakker enacted his plan by crashing the ring and bludgeoning Jey Uso. As Breakker and Reed beat down Uso, Roman Reigns made the save and cleaned house. Roman and Jey ran around the ring in stereo, but both Reed and Breakker cut them off simultaneously. Breakker ended Jey Uso with another wicked spear as Corey Graves insisted this was the plan. Reed added insult (and injury) to injury with a Tsunami. Breakker hit a table clothesline as the heels stood tall. Breakker re-appropriated a famous Reigns promo when he said the fans, the cameraman and the entire company works for him. He polished the babyfaces off with a double spear through a barricade.

WWE honors Hulk Hogan with another tribute on Monday Night Raw

WWE continues to pay tribute to one of its icons, Hulk Hogan. The wrestling company honored Hogan at the start of Monday Night Raw on July 28 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, four days after his death. The Raw roster came out in the arena to kick off the show, with WWE chief content officer Paul "Triple H" Levesque speaking about Hogan's impact of wrestling. "We lost one of the biggest and most globally recognized icons in the world. A man I grew up watching was fortunate enough to share the ring with and like so many of us were honored to call a friend," Levesque said. "He captivated millions of people and inspired them around the globe. We would not be standing here right now, all of us together, if it was not for him." The honorary 10-bell salute then rang as people in the crowd held up signs and chanted Hogan. Also with the roster was Hogan's son, Nick, and longtime friend and WCW collaborator Eric Bischoff. A tribute video also played highlighting the biggest moments of his Hogan's career, along with other moments outside of the ring. It was the second tribute for Hogan after one was done at Friday Night SmackDown on July 25, the day after his death. Hogan died at the age of 71 after he suffered a cardiac arrest at his home in Clearwater, Florida. Considered one of the biggest wrestling stars in history, he was a six-time WWE Champion and inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame twice, in 2005 for himself and in 2020 as part of the New World Order.
