LONDON : Cameroon winger Bryan Mbeumo said he 'grew up wearing' the Manchester United shirt on Monday after joining the club from Brentford on a deal until 2030, with an option for a further year.
Mbeumo, 25, will reportedly cost the 20-time Premier League champions an initial £65 million (US$87 million) having scored 20 goals in 38 league games last season for the Bees.
Tottenham, now managed by former Brentford boss Thomas Frank, were also chasing the France-born attacker before United's improved offer sealed the move.
United's third bid, worth an initial £65m with £6m in add-ons, was accepted last week.
'As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams,' Mbeumo said in a United statement.
'The team whose shirt I wore growing up.
'This is a massive club, with an incredible stadium and amazing fans, we are all really determined to challenge for the biggest trophies,' he added.
United coach Ruben Amorim has signed two other players during this summer in an attempt to avoid a repeat of last season's catastrophic display.
They lost to Tottenham in the Europa League final and a 15th-place finish in the top flight was their lowest since 1973-74.
Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and teenage Paraguayan defender Diego Leon have also moved to Old Trafford.
'Primary target'
Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggled as Amorim's main strikers last term.
'My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday,' Mbeumo said.
'I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players.
Mbeumo blossomed in six years at Brentford, scoring 70 goals and providing 51 assists in 242 appearances in all competitions following his move from French club Troyes in 2019.
'There is always a right time for a player to move on and, for Bryan, that time is now,' Brentford director of football Phil Giles said.
'He has the opportunity to go to one of the biggest clubs in the world, and we are very happy for him,' he added.
Mbeumo helped the Bees win promotion to the Premier League in 2021 and was instrumental in their impressive 10th-place finish in 2024-25.
'We are delighted to have secured another one of our primary targets ahead of the pre-season tour,' the Red Devils' director of football Jason Wilcox said.
'The experience in the US will be the perfect opportunity for Bryan to work with Ruben and his new team-mates as we prepare for an exciting season ahead,' he added.
In terms of United outgoings, Marcus Rashford is set to leave his boyhood club for Barcelona and an announcement could come on Tuesday.
Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia continue looking for new clubs and are not expected to fly to the US as part of the tour squad.
United start their pre-season tour of the US on Sunday by facing West Ham before their opening game of the new Premier League season against Arsenal on Aug 17.

New CR7 Life Museum Hong Kong puts spotlight on Portuguese football star

The Saudi Super Cup is packing its bags (and probably a few gold‑plated suitcases) for Hong Kong later this month (Aug 19-23), bringing along teams such as Al‑Nassr, Al‑Ittihad, Al‑Qadisiyah, and Al‑Ahli Saudi. But what's really going to get local football fans buzzing faster than a stoppage‑time winner is the chance to see the Saudi Football Federation's global ambassador himself, Cristiano Ronaldo, touch down at Chek Lap Kok. Think fans camping out at the airport, double‑decker buses wrapped in CR7's face, and social media feeds flooded with Ronaldo sightings – because if there's anything more unstoppable than his trademark celebratory leap, it's the hype that follows him everywhere. Hong Kong has already had a summer of football frenzy, with Liverpool, AC Milan, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur drawing nearly 100,000 fans to Kai Tak Stadium last month. But the possibility of five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo in town? That's the real game‑changer – the headline act that could turn football fever into full‑blown CR7 mania. Forget dim sum queues; get ready for crowds in replica shirts – from Manchester United and Real Madrid to Juventus and Al‑Nassr – plus a sea of selfie sticks. Premier League and Serie A stars got a roaring welcome recently, but none of them have a museum built in their honour in Hong Kong – and nothing gets a city shouting 'Siuuu!' louder than Ronaldo. The CR7 Life Museum HK is located at K11 Musea, in the heart of the Victoria Dockside arts and cultural district. – Handout The CR7 Life Museum Hong Kong, which opened last month at the arty K11 Musea mall in Tsim Sha Tsui, has already drawn football fans from near and far – and is now being promoted as a new attraction by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB). Organisers say the Hong Kong exhibition will run for a year. During a recent tour hosted by HKTB, Filipe Goncalves – chairman of Svenska Capital, who helped bring Ronaldo's first museum to Asia with the CR7 Family Office – explains that the CR7 Life Museum HK is a refreshed take on the original 2013 museum in Funchal, Ronaldo's hometown in Madeira. He also stayed tight‑lipped about a possible Ronaldo visit. 'We don't have any announcements yet, but we do plan for Ronaldo to come to Hong Kong to launch the museum at some point,' he says. Instead, Goncalves was more eager to highlight what visitors can find inside the 1,110sq m museum and exhibition space. 'As a Portuguese, my favourite part of the CR7 Life Museum is seeing his incredible achievements with the national team,' he says. 'But no matter which club you support, the museum lets you revisit Ronaldo's early days and the defining moments of his career – through photos, videos, interactive displays, installations, and the many trophies he's won for club and country.' Goncalves adds that no club overshadows another – whether it's Manchester United or Real Madrid, Ronaldo's presence still shines through. Driven by Ronaldo's input, the museum takes Asian fans on a deep dive into his storied career – while doubling as a cultural hotspot, complete with an exclusive merch store to keep the fandom buzzing. 'I think the museum strikes a good balance. We all have our favourite Ronaldo years with his different teams,' says Liam Chan, 30, a Hongkonger Red Devil who was glad to see Ronaldo's Manchester United years featured at the heart of the museum. A replica of a young Ronaldo's room from his Sporting Lisbon days. – DARYL GOH/The Star Ronaldo, whose father was a municipal gardener and part‑time kit man and whose mother worked as a cook and cleaner, left Madeira for Lisbon to join Sporting Lisbon's youth system. His early days at the club are captured in the museum through a modest bedroom exhibit. 'The museum is filled with trophies and shirts from some of the world's biggest clubs, but Ronaldo's story had to start somewhere,' says Goncalves. 'We placed his humble bedroom at the entrance so visitors can see where it all began – a young football dreamer who turned his hopes into reality through hard work and perseverance,' he adds. Tan Wei Qian, 17, a visitor from Singapore, was glad to learn more about Ronaldo's boyhood years, especially his time with hometown clubs Andorinha and Nacional in Madeira, brought to life through digital screens and artefacts on display. 'All the dazzle of his five Champions League wins is great, but it's the glimpse into where it all started that really stands out,' says Tan. At the CR7 Life Museum Hong Kong, visitors can also snap photos or record videos with life-sized statues of Ronaldo – from his triumphant mid-air leap in a Portugal shirt to one in traditional Saudi garb – and check out digital exhibits, including an AI photo booth that adds a playful touch to the tour. An exhibit of Ronaldo's iconic overhead kick for Real Madrid that rocked Juventus in the 2018 Champions League quarter-finals. – DARYL GOH/The Star Just down the waterfront, there's a popular bronze Bruce Lee striking a fighting pose on the Avenue of Stars – but inside the CR7 Life Museum, you'll find gravity‑defying moves too. The highlight? An exhibit of Ronaldo (then with Real Madrid) frozen mid‑bicycle kick at 2.38m against Juventus in April 2018 that truly steals the show. That wonder goal, crowned Goal of the Season, racked up nearly 200,000 fan votes out of 347,000. 'In a city where martial arts is such a big deal, it's nice to have a superhuman overhead‑kick exhibit for visitors too,' concludes Goncalves.

Shubman Gill: India's elegant captain

LONDON: Shubman Gill will fly home to India with plenty of credit after a sensational campaign with the bat against England and a hard-earned series draw in his first outing as Test captain. The stylish batsman scored a remarkable 754 runs in five Tests, falling just 20 shy of Sunil Gavaskar's long-standing series record for an Indian cricketer. Gill, nicknamed "Prince", arrived in England in early June under intense pressure and with a modest Test average of 35. Not only was he succeeding Rohit Sharma as captain, he was also filling the number four slot vacated by the great Virat Kohli, who followed Rohit into Test retirement in May. But Gill has led from the front in spectacular style, combining an effortless elegance with an ability to go through the gears and innovate when necessary. The 25-year-old scored 147 in his first innings of the series at Headingley. During the second Test at Edgbaston he compiled a majestic 269 in the first innings and a turbo-charged 161 in the second innings as India won to level the series. After a quiet third Test at Lord's, won by the hosts, Gill returned to form in Manchester, grafting for 103 in 238 balls as the tourists battled successfully to draw the match and keep the series alive. An unnecessary first-innings run-out in the fifth Test at the Oval left him an agonising 31 runs short of Gavaskar's mark and he fell for just 11 in his final innings of the campaign. Gill grew into his role as captain during a series in which he faced several challenges, including the vocal presence of several senior players and the limited availability of paceman Jasprit Bumrah. The series was still alive heading into the final match in London but India appeared to be sliding inexorably towards defeat before England suffered a dramatic collapse, with fast bowler Mohammed Siraj doing most of the damage. The nervy six-run win turned a potential 3-1 series defeat into a 2-2 draw, dramatically changing the narrative, and Gill collected India's player-of-the-series award to add gloss to his tour. Born in Fazilka, near the border with Pakistan, Gill moved to Mohali aged eight to be closer to better cricket facilities. As a boy he wanted to know what Kohli's scores and achievements were when he was at an equivalent age. And when Kohli, a former India captain, first saw his eventual successor in the nets, he said he had not even had 10 percent of Gill's talent when the same age. Gill made his one-day international debut in 2019 but it was in his first Test series, in Australia in 2020/21, that he caught the eye, notably with a fluent 91 in India's thrilling series-clinching win at the Gabba. His first Test hundred came in Chattogram at the end of 2022 and a month later, aged 23, he became the youngest player to make a one-day international double-century, smashing 208 off 149 balls against New Zealand. But it has not all been plain-sailing for the prodigiously talented batsman, whose average dipped below 30 after a duck against England in Hyderabad last year. Rahul Dravid, the then India coach, resisted the temptation to drop Gill, who went on to make two centuries during a series India won 4-1. Gill, who has skippered India in T20 cricket and leads the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League, was the man chosen to replace Rohit as Test skipper despite his relative youth. He has passed his first major test, with elated India great Sachin Tendulkar posting on social media after Monday's thrilling success: "Series 2-2, Performance 10/10!" - AFP

Cricket-India hail Gill and his 'Supermen' after Oval heist

NEW DELHI (Reuters) -An euphoric India heaped praises on Shubman Gill and his men after they pulled off an edge-of-the-seat thriller at the Oval on Monday to split an all-time classic series with England. Odds were stacked against India in their first test series under Gill, who inherited a team depleted by the retirement of batting stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli - two men who preceded him in that role. As if the gaping holes in their batting order were not bad enough, veteran seamer Mohammed Shami was deemed unfit for the tour, while pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was available only for three of the five tests as part of his workload management. Gill and his men went on to record memorable victories at Edgbaston and the Oval to secure a 2-2 series draw and assure their legions of fans that the future of Indian cricket was in safe hands. The indefatigable Mohammed Siraj led their lion-hearted bowling afford in the series finale to script a six-run victory amid high drama. Batting great Sachin Tendulkar led tributes to the team and said the quality of cricket on offer was "absolute goosebumps". "Series 2–2, Performance 10/10! SUPERMEN from INDIA! What a win," the former India captain wrote on X. England needed 35 runs on Monday to secure a 3-1 series win with four wickets in hand but Siraj struck three times to secure a famous victory for his team. "In a nail-biting, riveting hour of cricket at England's oldest test match ground, in characteristically cloudy Olde Blighty weather, India pulled off a historic heist," the Hindustan Times newspaper wrote. An Indian Express headline read "Miracles Do Happen" and the newspaper explained how Gill had stepped up as captain of a 'gun team'. The Hindu waxed eloquent on the "Mission accomplished". "After 25 days of riveting action, the best was saved for the last as Shubman Gil's men rode Mohammed Siraj's sensational spell to pull off a remarkable victory," it said. "It was a litmus test for an Indian team in transition but the young side showed heart and character as it fought back from tough situations to share the honours."
