Man City thrash Juventus to maintain 100% record
MANCHESTER CITY turned on the style to seal top spot in Group G at the Club World Cup with an emphatic 5-2 win over Juventus on Thursday.
The third straight victory for Pep Guardiola's side increases the chances of City avoiding a meeting with Real Madrid in the last 16 — a fate that may now await Juventus.
City and Juve will not know their opponent until the final pair of games in Group H conclude later on Friday.
A positive day for City saw 2024 Ballon d'Or winner Rodri make his first start since rupturing his ACL in September and Guardiola's side, featuring several new faces, look significantly improved on the team which struggled to finish 13 points behind Premier League champions Liverpool last season.

City were on top from the outset, with a Bernardo Silva header forcing Juve keeper Michele Di Gregorio to save with his feet in the fifth minute.
Four minutes later, Guardiola's new-look side had the lead when, after a characteristic, patient build-up, Rayan Ait-Nouri split the Juve defence with a superb pass which Jeremy Doku collected and dispatched into the far corner.
Juve were gifted an equaliser when City's Brazilian keeper Ederson's pass out was intercepted by Teun Koopmeiners, who marched into the box and confidently fired home.
Juve returned the gift, though in the 26th minute, when French defender Pierre Kalulu, under no pressure, turned a low cross from Matheus Nunes into his own net.
A short but intense downpour just before half-time cooled the stadium down, and Guardiola introduced his prolific Norwegian striker Erling Haaland at the break, and it took just seven minutes for him to find the scoresheet.
Tijjani Reijnders fed Matheus Nunes, whose low cross found an unmarked Haaland in the middle, and while it wasn't the cleanest of finishes from close range, the striker celebrated his 300th career goal.
Rodri left the field in the 66th minute to applause as Ilkay Gundogan took over his role in the centre of midfield, but City continued to over-run the Turin side.
Haaland latched on to a long ball from Ederson and looked for fellow sub Phil Foden in the middle, but put his cross beyond the England man only for Savinho to recover it and set up Foden for a simple conversion.
Savinho then made it 5-1 when, after a Haaland shot was saved by De Gregorio's feet, the Brazilian met the loose ball with a thundering drive which flew in off the underside of the bar.
Juventus had created little but restored a little pride when Kenan Yildiz produced a lovely touch and clever pass to set Dusan Vlahovic free, and the Serbian beat Ederson from the edge of the box.

Twenty-one games played. Two wins. Zero clean sheets. Not easy reading for Cork City fans, management and players alike. Since new City boss Ger Nash's appointment on May 15, their record reads three losses, two draws, zero wins. Again, not the bounce the 38-year-old would have been hoping for, but there have been green shoots during his short tenure. Last Monday saw Nash pick up the second point of his reign thanks to Djanairo Daniels' late equaliser, with the other coming in another very promising performance in the 1-1 at home to Shelbourne. Perhaps this City playing group hasn't got the rub of the green they've needed to kick on at points this season, but Seani Maguire insists their resurgence needs to happen now. With 15 Premier Division games remaining, there's no time to feel sorry for themselves. That starts with the visit of Stephen Kenny's St Patrick's Athletic to Turner's Cross on Friday night. "I think it can become kind of a mental thing, mind over matter. When things aren't going your way and you start to feel sorry for yourselves, especially with a young group," Maguire said. "It's up to us senior players to gather them around, help them move forward, because we don't have enough time. "There are 15 games left, we need to be looking to win games. We need to start picking up points real quick because if we don't, it could be too late." Fan discontent has been growing of late, to say the very least. The City faithful have never been ones to hide such. Several chants could be heard from the supporters in the shed end - who were among a season-low 1,815 crowd - last Monday night, aimed at majority owner Dermot Usher, who took over the club from FORAS prior to the 2023 season. Eleven-time capped Republic of Ireland international Maguire has called on the City fans to get behind the squad. He knows exactly the effect it can have on the players down at pitch level. "Look, I can sense their frustration; it's their club that they've been supporting for years. Going to every game, spending their well-earned money," the 31-year-old striker said. "When they're not seeing results go our way and seeing the club they love at the bottom of the league, it's not going to be nice. "I don't think it's coming from a lack of effort, I think the players are working their socks off every game to make sure we get points on the board and we're really trying to turn this around. "I think the support has been fantastic. I've been at this club through the best days and best years and it's obviously not nice seeing where the club is now in terms of league position, so if we can get the crowd behind us, behind the players, it would do a lot for us. "When you have Turner's Cross rocking, it gives us that edge. It's an old cliché, but it can be the 12th man, but then again, it falls into the players' hands; we're the only people that are going to get us out of this situation." While worry is rife regarding the club's position, Maguire believes the talent exists within the walls of their Bishopstown training base to change the mood music around the city and county. Despite the prospect of departures with the likes of Djenairo Daniels, Cathal O'Sullivan heavily linked with moves away, and a number of loans coming to an end, Maguire is confident the acquisitions Nash has so far made in defenders Fiacre Kelleher, Rory Feely and Aston Villa striker Charlie Lutz can help their cause. "I wouldn't worry too much as of yet because we've got a lot of talent in this dressing room. Things can be turned around... and the manager bringing in a couple more players is only going to make us stronger for the last third, half of the season, things can turn very quickly. "There's still a lot of football to be played." Kelleher has joined the group in the last week or so - despite not being able to play until July 1 - and his impact has been felt already, as illustrated by his new head coach Nash. "Fiacre has made a really strong impression on me... I was really pleased to get him on board. He's trained with the group four or five times, and he's been able to do his extra fitness work. "His experience in the game to date, his passion for the club and his leadership qualities have been strong since he has come in to work with us." Manchester City 5-2 Juventus Erling Haaland scored his 300th career goal as Manchester City thrashed Juventus 5-2 to finish top of Group G at the Club World Cup. Jeremy Doku, Phil Foden and Savinho - with a long-range stunner - were also on target as City produced an outstanding display despite both sweltering heat and a torrential downpour in Orlando on Thursday. City were pegged back after Doku's early opener when Ederson gifted a goal to Teun Koopmeiners but their lead was restored when Pierre Kalulu turned into his own net at the Camping World Stadium. Haaland, reaching a notable landmark in senior football for club and country, came off the bench to bundle in the third and Foden and Savinho made victory certain before Dusan Vlahovic's consolation. The result means City progress with a 100 per cent record from their three group games and should, in theory at least, have a more straightforward route through the knockout stages. Juve beat City 2-0 when the sides met in the Champions League in December but this was a far different side than the one that won just once in 13 games in a dismal run late last year. It was also a notable shift in gear from City after opening the competition with two straightforward wins against Wydad Casablanca and Al Ain. With Ballon d'Or winner Rodri making his first start since September, City were fluid and energetic. They made a fast start and Bernardo Silva had a header saved by the feet of Michele Di Gregorio before they took the lead in the ninth minute through Doku. Summer signing Rayan Ait-Nouri slipped him in with a fine throughball and the Belgian tucked home after cutting inside Kalulu. Juve responded immediately and City failed to make the most of a reprieve after Vlahovic scuffed an effort wide. Ederson carelessly gave the ball away from the resulting goalkick and Koopmeiners rifled a shot past the Brazilian. City dealt well with the setback and Tijjani Reijnders, Rodri and Omar Marmoush all had attempts blocked. The pressure paid off in the 26th minute although they benefited from a huge stroke of luck as Kalulu diverted Matheus Nunes' ball past Di Gregorio. The ferocious sunshine gave way to heavy rain just before the break but City were not deterred as Savinho shot at Di Gregorio before the keeper pushed away further strikes from Ait-Nouri and Marmoush. Marmoush was replaced by Haaland at the interval and the Norwegian soon made an impact. Reijnders played in Nunes, who rolled a pass perfectly into the path of Haaland in front of goal. His connection was hardly the cleanest but such was his positioning he could hardly miss. Ederson denied Vlahovic as Juve sought a way back but Haaland created the opening for the fourth when his pass was picked up by Savinho and powered in by Foden from close range. Savinho added another in style when he thundered in a shot off the underside of the bar from distance after 75 minutes.
