BJP trying to bury Tamil culture: CM Stalin
CHENNAI: DMK president and Chief Minister MK Stalin accused the BJP-led union government of attempting to suppress and bury the pride of Tamil culture that emerged through the Keezhadi excavations.
Praising the DMK student wing for organising an agitation - Keezhadi Engal Thaimadi - in Madurai on June 18, Stalin wrote a detailed letter in Murasoli, the DMK's mouthpiece, emphasising the importance of the excavation findings. The protest was held to condemn the union government for not approving the archaeological report on the Keezhadi findings.
'In 2013, during the UPA government, the ASI identified, through its inspections along the Vaigai river bank, that Keezhadi was an important settlement. The BJP government continued the excavations, but after three phases in 2015, the work was halted. The remaining seven phases were carried out by the state archaeology department,' Stalin said in the letter.
He also recalled how officer Amarnath Ramakrishna was transferred from the project and later returned after a legal battle to continue his work.
'The artefacts found at the excavation sites were sent to renowned laboratories across the world for testing. Based on the results, Ramakrishna submitted a scientifically grounded 982-page report in 2023. However, even after two years, the BJP government has not approved the report and has instead sent it back, seeking additional proof,' he added.
Referring to the scientific findings that iron was used in the Tamil region over 5,300 years ago, Stalin said, 'BJP leaders, including PM Narendra Modi, did not even acknowledge it on social media, even though Tamil Nadu is part of India and Tamils are Indian citizens. BJP leaders in Tamil Nadu are betraying Tamils for positions.'

Earlier in June, the ACB had issued summonses to Manish Sisodia and former Health Minister Satyendar Jain. Jain was summoned on June 6, while Sisodia was asked to appear on June 9. The summonses relate to a First Information Report (FIR) registered by the ACB on April 30, alleging irregularities in the construction of 12,748 classrooms or semi-permanent structures in government schools. According to the ACB, the alleged scam involved awarding contracts at inflated prices, each classroom reportedly costing Rs 24.86 lakh, nearly five times the standard cost. Investigators claim the contracts were given to 34 contractors, many of whom had links to the AAP. Further allegations include that the semi-permanent structures (SPS), designed to last around 30 years, were priced similarly to more durable Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) buildings, which typically have a lifespan of 75 years. The ACB also noted that an additional Rs 326 crore was added to the project cost without fresh tenders. The AAP has consistently dismissed the allegations as politically motivated.

Federal judge says Trump can't tie state funding to immigration enforcement
A US judge on Thursday stopped the Trump administration from forcing 20 Democratic-led states to help with immigration enforcement in order to receive federal transportation grants. Chief US District Judge John McConnell in Rhode Island ruled that the US Department of Transportation cannot require states to work with Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE ) to get billions in funding. The judge said this condition violated the US Constitution. In an open letter posted on the social media platform X, the former Bihar deputy Chief Minister accused the Prime Minister of repeatedly misleading the people of Bihar through what he called over 200 "jumla-filled" election rallies. Tejashwi claimed PM Modi 'has broken all records of deception' and dared him to revisit his own past speeches. 'You will not be able to speak due to embarrassment,' he wrote, urging the Prime Minister to introspect before addressing the public in Siwan on Friday. The RJD leader raised 12-pointed questions, demanding accountability for the state's poor rankings on key development indices.
