Iran founds new Supreme National Defense Council after June attacks by Israel

TEHRAN: Iran founded a new defense council after attacks in June by Israel and the U.S., Iranian state media reported Monday.
Iran's Supreme National Security Council, the country's highest security body, made the decision to establish the Supreme National Defense Council, which will be headed by President Masoud Pezeshkian, the report said.
The council will handle defensive plans and improve the capabilities of Iran's armed forces. Members will include the speaker of Parliament, the head of the judiciary and the chiefs of military branches and related ministries, the report said.
The defense, intelligence and foreign ministries are expected to be council members, although the report did not provide those details.
Iran's decision follows a 12-day air war by Israel and the U.S. that led to the deaths of nearly 1,100 people including military chiefs and commanders. A ceasefire has been in force since shortly after the airstrikes targeted Iran's major nuclear facilities.
Iran had a similar council during the 1980s war between Iran and Iraq that left nearly 1 million casualties on both sides.

India placed 379 passengers on ‘No Fly List' in last five years: Centre

India has placed 379 passengers on the 'No Fly List' in the last five years, the Union ministry of civil aviation (MoCA) said in the Parliament on Tuesday. The T1 terminal of Delhi airport. (Vipin Kumar/ HT Photo) In a written response to a question raised by Trinamool Congress MP Sagarika Ghose in the Rajya Sabha, minister of state for civil aviation Murlidhar Mohol shared an yearly breakup of individuals banned from flying due to unruly behaviour. As per the data shared, ten people were placed in the list in 2020. That number rose to 66 in 2021, but there was a slight dip in 2022 with 63 people being banned from flying. However, 2023 saw 110 people being put on the list, the highest so far. This decreased to 82 in 2024 and till July 30 this year, 48 people have been placed in the list. The government confirmed that it maintains a record of all individuals placed on the list and stated, 'As per the provisions of Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) on 'Handling of unruly/disruptive passengers', unruly passengers are categorised into three levels based on the severity of their misconduct onboard an aircraft.' 'The duration of ban for Level 1 misconduct is up to three months, for Level 2 is up to six months and for Level 3 is a minimum of 2 years or more without limit,' he added. As per rules, aggrieved people, after being informed about being included in the 'No Fly List' and the duration of the ban, have the right to appeal, within 60 days from the date of issue of the order, before an appellate committee constituted by the civil aviation ministry. The appellate committee comprises a retired judge of a high court as the chairman, a representative from a passengers' association, consumer association, or a retired officer of a Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum as a member, a representative of the airline holding a position not below the rank of vice-president or its equivalent as a member. Once the appeal is heard, the appellate committee issues a decision, and their ruling is considered final. If the appellant disagrees with the decision, they have rights to take the matter to the high court.

Govt pushes ahead with its agenda in Parliament as Opposition's protest continues

New Delhi, The government on Tuesday pressed on with its agenda amid continued disruptions in Parliament due to the Opposition's demand for a discussion on the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, as Lok Sabha passed a bill and Rajya Sabha approved a couple of resolutions despite the din. Govt pushes ahead with its agenda in Parliament as Opposition's protest continues Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had said on Monday that the government will be compelled to push for Parliament's approval for its legislative agenda if the Opposition continued to obstruct its smooth functioning with its protests. Lok Sabha passed 'The Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, 2025' with a voice vote, the first draft legislation approved by the House in Parliament's Monsoon session which began on July 21. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal moved for its consideration and passage amid the din in the House due to the Opposition's protest. The bill, which seeks to grant STs reservation in the state assembly, was introduced in the House on this day in 2024 and had been pending since. After the passage of the bill, Sandhya Ray, who was in the chair, adjourned the proceedings for the day as protests by opposition MPs continued unabated. Rajya Sabha saw its first adjournment around 11.45 am, when it was adjourned till 2 pm. When Rajya Sabha met at 2 pm, Opposition MPs were on their feet demanding a discussion on the special intensive revision. Amid ruckus, Harivansh, who was in the Chair, took up two statutory resolutions, including one for extending the President's rule in Manipur for another six months. He said it was a constitutional obligation, and told the members that the House has passed only one Bill in the session so far. The Chair also disallowed any remarks made by opposition leaders on issues other than the resolution that was being taken. Opposition MPs continued to raise slogans on the electoral roll revision issue, as a couple of members also tried to participate in the discussion on the resolution for extending President's Rule in Manipur beyond August 13. The resolution to extend the President's rule in Manipur, and the other one of the Finance Ministry to amend the Second Schedule to the Customs Tariff Act, 1975, were passed by voice vote. The Chair then adjourned the House for the day as protests continued. Barring discussions on Operation Sindoor in both Houses, Parliament has seen little transaction of its normal business since the Monsoon session began on July 21.
