As teams gear up for the new Betway Premiership season, they do so knowing the opening stretch offers no breathing room. After this weekend's curtain-raisers, clubs will dive straight into midweek fixtures, signalling a demanding start to a campaign that promises drama, intensity, and little respite.
The battle for supremacy begins immediately, with players needing to adapt quickly to the pace and physical demands of the schedule. For title hopefuls, every point will count — and early momentum could be decisive.
Among those looking to hit the ground running are Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Both face testing openers as they begin their respective campaigns under the watchful eye of expectant fans.

Pirates host Sekhukhune United on Saturday at the iconic Orlando Stadium — a venue that has already been buzzing with energy this season. Last weekend, the ground was packed to capacity for the visit of Polokwane City, showcasing the unwavering support of 'The Ghost'.
A similar turnout is expected this time, especially with both sides riding high after booking their places in the MTN8 semi-finals.
On Sunday, August 10, Chiefs travel to the picturesque Cape Town Stadium to face Stellenbosch FC. While the hosts will be buoyed by home support, the Glamour Boys will look to exploit the pressure on the home side as they seek a crucial opening-day victory. The fixture has grown in intensity over recent seasons, and another fiercely contested encounter is expected.
A congested calendar until December 21
The Premiership will run at full tilt until 21 December, with clubs navigating a packed schedule including MTN8 ties, the return of the Carling Knockout Cup, CAF inter-club competitions, and breaks for international duty.
Fifa international windows will temporarily halt domestic play as national teams — including Bafana Bafana — focus on World Cup qualifiers and friendlies. Further disruption looms in December, when the Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Morocco (December 21 to January 18), posing selection headaches for clubs likely to lose key players during a critical phase of the season.
The coaching carousel spins — slightly
Unusually for South African football, the coaching merry-go-round has taken a relatively subdued turn this off-season, with a mix of fresh and familiar faces settling into new roles.
All eyes will be on Lehlohonolo Seema as he leads newly promoted Siwelele FC. Renowned for his tactical clarity and man-management skills, Seema will be keen to establish top-flight credibility early.
Veteran tactician Gavin Hunt takes over at Durban City, bringing with him the experience of transforming struggling sides into serious contenders.
Elsewhere, John Maduka has been tasked with steadying the ship at Magesi FC, a club eager to establish itself among the elite. His calm authority and emphasis on structure will be key.
Marumo Gallants have placed their trust in Frenchman Alexandre Lafitte, who arrives with a reputation for progressive football shaped by his experiences abroad.
At Chippa United, Sinethemba Badela takes the reins with a clear brief — to build team cohesion and push the Eastern Cape club towards greater stability and competitiveness.
One of the most intriguing appointments is that of Moroccan former international Abdeslam Ouaddou, who steps into the hot seat at Orlando Pirates. While the pressure will be immense, Ouaddou has the pedigree and temperament to marshal a squad brimming with quality.
As these tacticians begin to stamp their authority, and as the Premiership takes off at breakneck speed, fans can expect a season packed with unpredictability, emerging stars, and battles both on and off the pitch.

Kaizer Chiefs injury update: Three key defenders

Kaizer Chiefs have given the latest update on three of their defenders ahead of the Richards Bay match. Amakhosi host the Natal Rich Boys at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday evening in a Betway Premiership clash. With head coach Nasreddine Nabi still in his home country over a family emergency, his assistant Khalil Ben Youssef has taken over. The young coach has given an update on Given Msimango, Rushwin Dortley and Zita Kwiniak. 'I think with Dortley, he keeps working with our medical staff. They did a very good job with him,' Ben Youssef told the media. 'Soon, I think few weeks, he will be back with us, he and Given [Msimango] will start training sessions with the team. I think last season, it was tough for us when we finished the season. We finished, let me say the last three games without a defender on the bench. Given was injured, Zitha [Kwinika] was injured, and Dortley was injured, then we promoted Aiden [McCarthy] to play the last two games. Kaizer Chiefs are yet to concede this season, having kept two clean sheets so far. 'This season we start with Given and Dortley out, for sure, when they will be back, they will help the team with the experience they have, and also with confidence. They will fight for this position now. I think Aiden with [Inacio] Miguel, they perform very well, Zitha is coming, he is ready. 'Now they will be back, and it's confidence. And we know when we have a lot of players, the level of the players begins to increase,' Ben Youssef concluded. Kaizer Chiefs have signed eight players so far this season. 'Scholar of the game' Keshav Maharaj gives Aussies a spin lesson in first ODI

Keshav Maharaj celebrates one of his five wickets in the Proteas' demolition of Australia in the first ODI in Cairns on Tuesday. Picture: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix The Proteas registered an emphatic victory over hosts Australia in the first ODI in Cairns on Tuesday after Keshav Maharaj claimed his maiden five-wicket ODI haul. The 98-run triumph, with Australia bundled out for 198 in response to the Proteas' 296/8, was the visitors' fourth consecutive ODI victory over the Baggy Greens. Such an outcome looked utterly out of the question when Australia's openers Mitch Marsh and Travis Head had fast-forwarded to 60/0 after just seven overs. But Australia were utterly undone by their opponents' decision to field three spin bowlers, all of whom played a significant role – none more so than Maharaj. The veteran left-arm orthodox tweaker enjoyed a magical night out on the eastern coast of Queensland, claiming a career-best 5/29, but it was ODI debutant Prenelan Subrayen that got the ball rolling when Travis Head gave the off-spinner the charge. Aged 31, Subrayen (1/46) knows his craft inside out despite his limited international experience and duly held the delivery back to provide Ryan Rickleton with a comfortable stumping. From there Maharaj spun the ball prodigiously as Australia's middle-order looked inept, even intimidated, by the turning ball as they lost 6/29 in 33 deliveries. Next Stay Close ✕ It was not just the spin that outfoxed the Aussies, but also Maharaj's deceptive usage of the crease, which he credits to his undying passion for the game. 'Even though I'm 35-years old, I believe in my journey. I'm always learning. I think the day I stop learning is the day that I have to walk away from the game,' Maharaj said. 'I'd like to think I'm a scholar of the game. I watch a lot of cricket. I'm always bouncing ideas – even from the younger generation – because it's nice to see how the difference in thinking works. 'Once I identified there was a little bit of spin, I tried to use my pace and a little bit of angle on the crease. Fortunately, enough, I put the ball in the right areas. "I'm still learning. I'd like to think I'm getting better as age goes on.' Australia were cruising at 0-60 and then it all came crashing down in no time 🫨 Keshav Maharaj is on an absolute tear! #AUSvSA — (@cricketcomau) August 19, 2025 Maharaj was visibly animated whilst celebrating his first four wickets, but simply looked heavenwards after clean bowling Aaron Hardie to complete his first-ever white-ball 'Michelle'. 'I'm not someone who sort of bowls for five-fors. I'm a process-driven person, so I judge myself on my consistency and my length. I think it was more a sigh of relief to finally tick the box,' he explained. 'You dream of playing international cricket, you dream of putting in match-winning performances. And the dreams keep building. 'So it's always nice. We train as individuals and as a team and to see it come together, it's super special. I was very fortunate to get the rewards. I mean to put the balls in the right area. It's not often that happens, but very grateful and I'll take that performance. 'It's (Australia) a place where I came to (Test) debut, so it's a wonderful, sort of fitting nostalgic feeling coming back here and getting my first five-for. To be able to tick the box of getting a five-for will always be special. But probably more a sigh of relief than anything else.' The Proteas' batters had set up the contest with a good shift earlier in the afternoon. Aiden Markram returned to white-ball form with a polished 82 (81 balls, 9x4), while captain Temba Bavuma (65) and Matthew Breetzke (57) also struck half-centuries in their first innings of the tour. The tourists now travel south down the coast for the second ODI in Mackay on Friday before concluding the series on Sunday at the same venue. SCORES First ODI, Cairns South Africa: 296/8 Markram 82, Bavuma 65, Breetzke 57, Head 4/57) Australia: 198 all out Marsh 88, Dwarhuis 33, Maharaj 5/33, Ngidi 2/26 South Africa won by 98 runs, lead series 1-0

Sebelebele strike breathes life into Orlando Pirates as Stellenbosch looms

Kamogelo Sebelebele's debut equaliser against Mamelodi Sundowns this past weekend has reignited belief at Orlando Pirates as they prepare to face Stellenbosch FC in a key midweek clash. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Hope was rekindled when new signing Kamogelo Sebelebele made an immediate impact at his new club, levelling the score for Orlando Pirates in their MTN8 semi-final first leg against Mamelodi Sundowns this past Saturday. The goal was not only a significant milestone for the former TS Galaxy midfielder but also a timely boost for a team that had endured a lacklustre start to the season, restoring belief in what had been expected before the campaign began. While it is understandable that a new coach and several fresh faces are part of the equation, the reality remains that results are what ultimately matter. Heading into the crucial midweek clash against Stellenbosch FC at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday (7.30pm kick-off), securing a positive outcome will be at the forefront of the team's priorities. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou made an effort to hit the reset button by reintroducing key players from the Jose Riveiro era, including Thalente Mbatha and Evidence Makgopa, in his starting line-up. Their influence on the pitch was noticeable, some more than others, but perhaps Ouaddou's greatest achievement was restoring fan faith. The line-up closely reflected what supporters had been calling for, resulting in unity rather than dissent. That said, fans' preferences should not dictate team selection. Still, their observations hold some merit: too many new additions can hinder chemistry, and while opportunities to score had presented themselves in the first two matches, the spark to break through was often missing. Sebelebele's goal may have been the first sign of that spark finally igniting, but the question remains whether they will be able to carry the momentum. Pirates now face a Stellies side that edged them 1-0 in their last visit to the notoriously challenging Slaughter House, the nickname affectionately given to the Pirates' home ground. A solid result against the Cape Winelands side would not only help Pirates get back on track but also build momentum ahead of Saturday's second-leg clash with Sundowns. Ouaddou has shown faith not only in the newcomers but also in the young players stepping up in the absence of injured regular skipper Nkosinathi Sibisi. Mbekezeli Mbokazi, in only his first full season since promotion from the youth ranks, has been holding the fort admirably. His performances have exceeded expectations for his age, earning praise from Ouaddou. 'Let me be very honest, I have to be careful with compliments because I worry that they might stop working,' Ouaddou said. 'If he continues to work hard, maintain professionalism, and live a disciplined lifestyle, he has a bright future ahead. What I saw against Sundowns was a performance worthy of big European clubs, and we are thrilled to have him here at Pirates, also a big club in Africa, but he must keep working.' At just 19-years old, Mbokazi is already taking on responsibilities typically reserved for senior players. His early success, however, does not lessen the importance of the challenges ahead. The upcoming fixture against Stellies will be just as critical, testing both the young defender and the team's collective resilience under pressure, especially on the back of their two shocking opening losses.
