Red Sox squash record-breaking Berries team to advance to WCBL championship

The Regina Red Sox are going to the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) Final after defeating the Saskatoon Berries 6-2 in Game 3 of the East Division Final Tuesday night. On the road, Regina got out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Only for Saskatoon to immediately tie the game at one in the bottom half. Red Sox all-stars Matthew Fox and Brady Bye would seal the game in the 7th inning with back-to-back RBI doubles to give Regina a 4-run lead. Reliever Ayden Page would close out the ball game pitching 3.2 innings scoreless innings, giving up just two hits, a walk and striking out two Saskatoon batters. The berry pie has been made. FANS, WE ARE GOING TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP ❤️😤🔥 — Regina Red Sox (@ReginaRedSox) August 13, 2025 The Berries' season ends after they set a league record, 46 wins in the regular season. In their two playoff series against Moose Jaw and the Red Sox, Saskatoon lost both game ones before staying off elimination and force a third game in each series. The win sends the Red Sox to their first WCBL championship since 2019. It is also their seventh appearance in the league final since 2010 – the most of any team in the WCBL. However, Regina has not won a league title in 13 years, when they won back-to-back championships in 2011 and 2012. Regina now readies to take on the Sylvan Lake Gulls in the league final. Sylvan Lake has not lost a game yet this postseason, sweeping the Lethbridge Bulls in the West semi-finals and then Okotoks in the Division final. Game 1 is scheduled for Thursday night at Currie Field, first pitch at 7:05 p.m. Because the Gulls had a better regular season record than Regina, games 2 and 3 will both be at Gulls Stadium.

Mariners catch Astros in the AL West after beating Baltimore for their 8th straight win

BALTIMORE (AP) — It's still a little early for scoreboard watching. And besides, why would the Seattle Mariners mess with what's working? 'I don't think anyone's paying attention to that,' right-hander George Kirby said. 'We're just playing baseball and doing our thing.' Kirby led Seattle to its eighth straight win Tuesday night, 1-0 over the Baltimore Orioles, and about 90 minutes after he spoke in the clubhouse, the Mariners caught Houston in the AL West. The Astros lost 14-1 to Boston, dropping into a first-place tie with Seattle. Seattle is starting a road trip that also includes matchups with the Mets and Phillies. The Mariners have three more games against Houston in mid-September, and those will decide who wins the season series. Kirby allowed three hits in seven innings on an 87-degree night that wasn't oppressive, but seemed to give closer Andrés Muñoz trouble when he began to feel lightheaded while pitching the ninth. The heat also altered Kirby's wardrobe. 'First time I haven't worn sleeves in probably two years, which was nice,' Kirby said. 'I was just finding a way to cool down in the tunnel — some ice or whatever it is. It'll get you, so you just got to make sure you hydrate.' Since allowing 11 runs in 8 2/3 innings in his first two starts of the season, Kirby has shaved his ERA all the way down to 3.71. It's the first time all year that he has finished a game with it under 4.00. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. In the ninth, Muñoz needed a lengthy break on the mound after walking Gunnar Henderson. After taking a drink out of a cup, he allowed a single to Adley Rutschman and a long foul fly to Ryan Mountcastle that was almost a home run. Then Mountcastle grounded out to end it. 'I thought he battled through it very well and made some good pitches there to Mountcastle, who put up a pretty good at-bat,' manager Dan Wilson said. 'That was a big save right there in a big situation.' ___ AP MLB:

Blue Jays reach 70 wins thanks to 5-1 win over the Cubs

Ernie Clement and Daulton Varsho homered, and the Toronto Blue Jays became the first AL team to reach 70 wins by beating the Chicago Cubs 5-1 on Tuesday night. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had three hits as the AL East-leading Blue Jays (70-50) improved to 23-11 against NL opponents. The Cubs have dropped five of seven. In those five losses, they scored a total of six runs. Toronto right-hander José Berríos (9-4) allowed two hits, both singles, in 5 1/3 scoreless innings. He walked four and struck out three. Pitching in front of a season-high crowd of 43,003, Berríos won his fourth straight decision. He is 7-1 with a 3.62 ERA in his past 10 starts. Starting for the first time since Sept. 25, 2024, at Philadelphia, Cubs right-hander Javier Assad (0-1) allowed four runs and eight hits in four innings. The Cubs reinstated Assad off the 60-day injured list. He had been sidelined by an oblique injury. Alejandro Kirk's RBI single was one of three Blue Jays hits in the first inning. Clement hit a three-run drive off Assad in the fourth. Varsho extended Toronto's advantage with a leadoff blast against Ben Brown in the eighth. It was Varsho's 12th homer. Chicago's Michael Busch hit an RBI single off Tommy Nance in the seventh. Brendon Little came on and struck out Pete Crow-Armstrong to strand runners at second and third. Blue Jays infielder Andrés Giménez went 1 for 3 with a walk in his return from a sprained left ankle. Giménez last played July 4. Varsho singled to begin the fourth and Ty France was hit by a pitch before Clement's first-pitch drive to left. The Blue Jays are 31-31 on the road and 39-19 at home. Blue Jays RHP Kevin Gausman (8-8, 3.85 ERA) is scheduled to start Wednesday against Cubs RHP Cade Horton (6-3, 3.18 ERA).
