Blue Jays reach 70 wins thanks to 5-1 win over the Cubs
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had three hits as the AL East-leading Blue Jays (70-50) improved to 23-11 against NL opponents.
The Cubs have dropped five of seven. In those five losses, they scored a total of six runs.
Toronto right-hander José Berríos (9-4) allowed two hits, both singles, in 5 1/3 scoreless innings. He walked four and struck out three.
Pitching in front of a season-high crowd of 43,003, Berríos won his fourth straight decision. He is 7-1 with a 3.62 ERA in his past 10 starts.
Starting for the first time since Sept. 25, 2024, at Philadelphia, Cubs right-hander Javier Assad (0-1) allowed four runs and eight hits in four innings.
The Cubs reinstated Assad off the 60-day injured list. He had been sidelined by an oblique injury.
Alejandro Kirk's RBI single was one of three Blue Jays hits in the first inning.
Clement hit a three-run drive off Assad in the fourth. Varsho extended Toronto's advantage with a leadoff blast against Ben Brown in the eighth. It was Varsho's 12th homer.
Chicago's Michael Busch hit an RBI single off Tommy Nance in the seventh. Brendon Little came on and struck out Pete Crow-Armstrong to strand runners at second and third.
Blue Jays infielder Andrés Giménez went 1 for 3 with a walk in his return from a sprained left ankle. Giménez last played July 4.
Varsho singled to begin the fourth and Ty France was hit by a pitch before Clement's first-pitch drive to left.
The Blue Jays are 31-31 on the road and 39-19 at home.
Blue Jays RHP Kevin Gausman (8-8, 3.85 ERA) is scheduled to start Wednesday against Cubs RHP Cade Horton (6-3, 3.18 ERA).

Elks defeat Argos 28-20 for second straight win
The Edmonton Elks appear to be poised for a second-half surge. Steven Dunbar Jr.'s early fourth-quarter touchdown catch proved to be the difference as the Elks emerged with a 28-20 victory over the Toronto Argonauts in a game between two teams clinging on to playoff hopes on Friday. The Elks (3-6) have now won two games in a row. 'I'm really proud of this unit,' said Elks quarterback Cody Fajardo. 'Our challenge this week was to do something we haven't done this year, and that's to stack two wins on top of each other.' Fajardo, who started the season as backup to Tre Ford, was 25-of-31 passing for 273 yards. 'He's doing a great job with the offence right now,' said Elks head coach Mark Kilam. 'They are really rallying around each other. I thought (running back Justin) Rankin did a nice job and that the receivers were really blocking on the permitter. A credit to those guys for sure.' Edmonton marched all the way down the field, culminating in a four-yard TD pass deep into the end zone from Fajardo to Dunbar. They added a single off the ensuing kickoff to lead 24-17. Toronto came back with a 29-yard field goal from Hajrullahu. Blanchard attempted a 43-yard field goal but was wide for a single. The Argos attempted a fake punt with two minutes left in the fourth but were stopped short and turned the ball over on downs at their own 35, leading to a 22-yard field goal by Blanchard. Storm beat Dream at Vancouver's Rogers Arena in first WNBA regular-season game on Canadian soil
Social Sharing Skylar Diggins had 21 points and 11 assists and the Seattle Storm hung on to beat the Atlanta Dream 80-78 to end a six-game skid on Friday night at Rogers Arena in Vancouver in the first Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) regular-season game outside of the United States. Nneka Ogwumike scored 15 points, Brittney Sykes added 13 and Dominique Malonga had 12 points and eight rebounds as the Storm (17-17) squandered a 15-point lead before snapping Atlanta's six-game win streak. Rhyne Howard scored 21 points and Brionna Jones had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Atlanta (21-12). The game, held in a city that has neither a WNBA or NBA team of its own, had created a buzz of anticipation in Vancouver.
