Cristian, son of Francesco Totti, announces retirement at 19

The Hindu4 days ago
Cristian, son of AS Roma legend Francesco Totti, announced his retirement from football at the age of 19 on Monday.
Though he gave no official reason for the decision, several media reports have claimed that the pressure of being a legend's son weighed too much on him.
Totti, a FIFA World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, spent his entire career at AS Roma, playing over 780 matches and scoring 307 goals.
He won the Serie A once and the Coppa Italia, and Supercoppa Italiana twice with the side, earning the nickname L'Ottavo Re di Roma (the eighth King of Rome) from the club's fans.
Cristian, however, had a different trajectory in professional football.

He began his youth career at Roma but limited game-time — 15 minutes across two U18 — saw him move to Frosinone Primavera, where he scored once in four matches.
He then had a brief spell at Rayo Vallecano in Spain, while his most recent experiences included short spells with Avezzano & Olbia in Italy's fourth division.
However, he constantly remained under heavy criticism — especially body shaming — on social media, with some calling him Captain Salsiccia (Captain Sausage).
'He was treated like dirt because he's the son of Francesco and Ilary (Blasi),' Ninni Corda, the technical director of Olbia, had told Sportitalia in an earlier interview.
Cristian, however, will not be away from football entirely. He will now work at the Totti Soccer School, founded by his father.

In the third-place match, GM Hikaru Nakamura beat GM Arjun Erigaisi 3.5-2.5 in a thrilling contest. While Carlsen's win was a big moment, his rivalry with Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh is what's grabbing headlines again. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD At the Esports World Cup, Carlsen took another dig at world champion Gukesh during a fun challenge. He was asked to stay silent until he heard the name of a player better than him. He didn't react to names like Bobby Fischer, but finally spoke when Garry Kasparov was mentioned. Carlsen's jibe at Gukesh Later, when the clip was shared on Instagram, Carlsen commented, 'Would have stayed quiet for Gukesh as well.' The comment was clearly a jibe at Gukesh and has sparked reactions online. This isn't the first time things have heated up between the two. Although Gukesh had beaten Carlsen in that round, the five-time world champion had the last laugh by winning the title. Lionel Messi To Face Rohit-Kohli & Dhoni In Seven-A-Side Cricket Match At Mumbai On His First Visit In Last 14 Years

The amount of excitement in football fans is at sky-level as Football legend Lionel Messi may be seen playing cricket later this year, as plans are underway for him to participate in a seven-a-side exhibition match at Mumbai's iconic Wankhede Stadium on December 14. If all goes well, Indian cricket greats like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, and Rohit Sharma could join the star-studded lineup. The event is being organised as part of Messi's promotional tour of India. According to the Indian Express, A prominent event management agency has reportedly approached the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to book the stadium for the match. The organisers are currently finalising the logistics. 'Messi will be at Wankhede Stadium on December 14. He is likely to play a cricket match, too, with former and current cricketers. The organisers will come up with a complete schedule once everything is finalised,' a source from the MCA told The Indian Express. Messi's upcoming visit is expected to span from December 13 to 15. In addition to Mumbai, the Argentine superstar may also travel to New Delhi and Kolkata. This will be his second trip to India. His first visit was in 2011, when he led Argentina in an international football friendly against Venezuela at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium. Earlier this year, there were also reports that the Argentina national football team would visit India in October for friendly matches. Kerala's Sports Minister V Abdurahiman had announced an agreement with the Argentina Football Association (AFA) to host two matches in the state. However, those plans appear to have been put on hold. World Cup Glory Lionel Messi led Argentina to victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, securing the only major trophy missing from his impressive career. This was Argentina's third World Cup title and their first since 1986. At 38, Messi currently plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer and is preparing for what could be his final appearance at the FIFA World Cup in 2026, to be hosted in the United States. The World Cup glory cemented his status as one of the greatest players in football history. If the cricket match goes ahead, it will offer fans a rare and exciting crossover moment between two of the world's most beloved sports.

"You Can't Talk Like That": Umpire Kumar Dharmasena In Heated Chat With KL Rahul. Reason Is...

Indian cricket team batter KL Rahul got into a heated conversation with on-field umpire Kumar Dharmasena during Day 2 of the fifth Test match against England at The Oval on Friday. The incident took place following a war of words between England batter Joe Root and India pacer Prasidh Krishna. Dharmasena wanted the argument to end when Rahul stepped in to support his teammate. Rahul asked the umpire if he wanted India to just bat and bowl without showing any emotion on the field. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Star Sports India (@starsportsindia) Here's a look at the complete conversation between KL Rahul and Kumar Dharmasena - Rahul: What do you want us to do? Be quiet? Dharmasena: You will like any bowler to come and walk to you? No, you can't do that. No, Rahul, we should not go on that way. Rahul: What do you want us to do? Just bat and bowl and go home? Dharmasena: We will discuss at the end of the match. You can't talk like that. Coming to the match, Yashasvi Jaiswal's unbeaten 51 took India to 75/2 at stumps on the second day of the fifth Test against England, with a lead of 52 runs on Friday. India lost opener KL Rahul (7) and Sai Sudharsan (11) but conveniently erased a 23-run first innings deficit, largely due to Jaiswal's positive approach with the bat. Rahul was removed by Josh Tongue while Gus Atkinson accounted for Sudharsan. Jaiswal was accompanied by night watchman Akash Deep (4 not out) when the stumps were drawn. Earlier, England replied with 247 against India's 224 in the first essay, taking a slender lead. Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj led a brilliant fightback for India by picking four wickets apiece as the visitors kept England's lead down to 23 runs.
