The Junya Watanabe Man x Filson limited edition capsule collection will drop tomorrow at Filson's New York, Los Angeles and Milan stores as well as Dover Street Market and Filson.eu. The decidedly avant-garde pieces debuted earlier this year at the Watanabe Man runway show during Men's Fashion Week in Paris — described as 'bold reinterpretations of timeless Filson silhouettes, including the JacShirt, Mackinaw Wool Cruiser, and Mackinaw Work Vest.'
They had been in the works for several months. Last fall, Watanabe traveled from Tokyo to Seattle to meet with Filson's Chief Creative Officer, Alex Carleton. 'It was a perfect Seattle evening – windy, rainy, cold and dark,' recalled Carleton of Watanabe's arrival at the brand's flagship store. Carleton, who has been with the 128 year-old heritage brand for over a decade, had prepared rack upon rack of pieces from the company's archives – from uniforms they'd produced for the U.S. Forest Service to old-school fishing vests – as well as graphic design elements in the form of patches and logos, for the man he described as a 'superstar.'
Watanabe, for his part, had arrived with sketches and ideas of pieces he was interested in deconstructing. It's worth noting that this was not the first time the Japanese designer, who started as an apprentice pattern-maker at Comme des Garçons and launched his own label in 1992, had collaborated with Filson. In 2012 he launched pieces under his Comme des Garçons sub‑label (Eye), and last year he released a special edition Denim Cruiser jacket for said jacket's 110th anniversary. (Fun fact: the cruiser jacket was originally designed and engineered for timber surveyors working in the Pacific Northwest, with specific pockets for maps and surveyors tools, and was patented in 1914).

Carleton recalled that Watanabe 'was a consummate observer. He inspected everything with austerity and respect, and spent hours taking notes and photographs.' All the while Carleton, who previously held positions at Polo Ralph Lauren and L.L. Bean, engaged while attempting to remain calm in the presence of one of his idols. 'I remember living in New York City in the '90s and seeing a collection he did with [historic British leather company] Lewis Leathers. This was before people were going collab crazy,' he noted. 'I was really struck by how he integrated and adopted heritage clothing into modern art. He had a very skilled way of integrating disparate parts and pieces, disparate references to create something new and original.'

After that initial meeting, Carleton took Watanabe to a second Filson shop located in an area of north Seattle near the banks of Salmon Bay (so named because hundreds of thousands of salmon migrate through this estuary every year). 'I've got one of my style icons in my truck, and we're talking about Seattle and grunge and music he likes and the movie 'My Own Private Idaho.' It was very cool to spend time with him.' The next day, Watanabe flew back to Japan. Carleton kept expectations low. 'I didn't know what it would yield, but I didn't expect that it would be a collection, and I don't think that he expected it would be a collection.'
Within a few weeks it became clear that the collaboration would be more than just a few pieces. Carleton was sent sketches to review, comment and approve before Watanabe's studio would proceed. 'The sketches just kept coming and coming and I started to realize this might be a much bigger thing. Then we had a conversation when [Watanabe] said the entire show would be based on and inspired by Filson.'
41 looks — From sharply tailored fishtail mod coats to hybrid overcoats and reconstructed shirt jackets — were shown in a stark, chilly, concrete Parisian venue hung with Filson ad campaigns from over the decades. (Watch the show here). Carleton noted that 'it was a very comprehensive and expressive point of view.'
'It was all authentic. Everything from color, textures, materials and silhouettes. There were accessories, original tin cloth bags. So the icons were represented. He did some creative fusion pieces taking elements from our sporting goods heritage, so there were parts and pieces of fishing vests integrated into outerwear pieces.'

'That is the cool thing about Junya, I don't think anybody can argue the authenticity of his artistry and creative vision,' said Carleton. 'I felt he'd done an incredible job paying homage to the classic pieces of the Filson heritage, our business and who we are.'
The Junya Watanabe Man x Filson limited edition capsule collection will drop tomorrow (August 6th) at Filson's New York, Los Angeles and Milan stores as well as Dover Street Market and Filson.eu

Liam Neeson Makes Rare Comment About Late Wife Natasha Richardson

Liam Neeson Makes Rare Comment About Late Wife Natasha Richardson originally appeared on Parade. Amid his new romance with Pamela Anderson, Liam Neeson is looking back at his marriage to the late Natasha Richardson. Neeson — who stars alongside Anderson in The Naked Gun reboot that hits theaters Friday, August 1 — reminisced about his meet-cute with Richardson in a rare, personal reflection. Neeson and Richardson, who went on to marry and have two children before her death in 2009, first met while co-starring in the 1993 Broadway revival of the play Anna Christie. "It was great doing it every night with her and falling in love," the Taken star, 73, told The New York Timesabout his late wife in an interview published on Thursday, July 31. The actor, who tends to keep the details of his personal life as close to the vest as possible, reminisced about the beginning of his romance with Richardson in a tone that was nearly a whisper, the NYT noted. Neeson and Richardson, who went on to tie the knot in 2004, later welcomed sons Micheál and Daniel. Richardson was just 45 years old when she died in 2009 from a head injury in caused by a skiing accident. The Schindler's List actor notably brought Michael, now 30, and Daniel, now 28, as his dates to The Naked Gun premiere in New York City earlier this week. Anderson, for her part, brought her own two sons — Brandon, 28 and Dylan, 22 — whom she shares with ex-husband Tommy Lee. Andy Cohen, who had been close friends with Richardson, even shared his own comparison of Anderson and the Tony winning-actress to Neeson at the time. "Natasha was a dear friend of mine and I'm gonna tell you something," the Watch What Happens Live host shared on his SiriusXM show Andy Cohen Live. "As I was telling him at the premiere party, I go, 'Liam, she is an independent woman just like Tash was. She loves to cook. She has her own thing going on. She has two boys.'" While neither Neeson nor Anderson have officially confirmed their romance — artfully dodging the question presented to them on the Today show earlier this week — the duo can't stop gushing over each other (or being affectionate on the red carpet.) Even back in 2024, Neeson told People: "With Pamela, first off, I'm madly in love with her. She's just terrific to work with. I can't compliment her enough, I'll be honest with you," he gushed. "No huge ego. She just comes in to do the work. She's funny and so easy to work with. She's going to be terrific in the film." Aubrey Plaza to star as Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss

Aubrey Plaza is set to star as Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss in a new biopic. Titled The Heidi Fleiss Story, the dark comedy will follow the final days leading up to Fleiss' 1993 arrest, when authorities exposed her high-end prostitution ring operating in Los Angeles, Deadline reports. Plaza will star in and produce the film through her company, Evil Hag. The project marks her first major role since the death of her husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena, in January this year. Fleiss rose to prominence in the early 1990s for allegedly running a secretive operation that catered to celebrities, media executives and other powerful figures. She was said to have taken over the business from her mentor, convicted madam Elizabeth 'Madam Alex' Adams, and expanded it into a multimillion-dollar enterprise. That empire collapsed in June 1993, when Fleiss was arrested and later charged with pandering, tax evasion and money laundering. Prosecutors alleged she laundered more than $1.5 million (£1.1 million) through shell companies and false records. The case drew national headlines, fuelled by speculation over a list of high-profile clients. The list remains sealed to this day. Plaza has been gradually returning to public life following Baena's death by suicide. In February, she appeared on SNL50: The Anniversary Special, wearing a pink tie-dyed T-shirt - a subtle tribute to the couple's wedding-day attire. The pair had been together for more than a decade, but had separated in the months before Baena's death.
