Meet Ritu Beri, the ‘selfish' designer

The first-person singular pronoun 'I" comes up often when designer Ritu Beri speaks, though not in a self-indulgent way. It's a reflection of her strong sense of identity, of creating a niche in a world dictated by trends and keywords.
That's one of the reasons the designer launched Escape Goa, an immersive lifestyle space housed in a 200-year-old Portuguese villa in Palolem, earlier this year. Painted in her signature red-and-white colour combination, the space allows visitors to eat at a fine-dining restaurant overlooking a paddy field, enjoy performances by musicians and stand-up comics, listen to talks on various issues, explore pop-ups by homegrown brands that make accessories, perfumes and jewellery, and browse through Beri's resortwear. It's a relatively new retail concept that's popular in the West and finding a footing in India, where a designer curates a range of experiences under one roof.
Interestingly, Beri has no store besides the resortwear space at Escape Goa. She takes orders online and then works on designs. 'I am not really a retail-oriented person who wants too many stores," explains Beri, who divides her time between Delhi and Goa.
In a career of three decades, Beri, who is in her early 50s, has racked up many firsts—the first Indian designer to showcase at the Paris Haute Couture Week (1999); the first to head a French fashion brand, Scherrer (2000; a three-year stint); the first to open the inaugural edition of Lakme Fashion Week (2000). In between, she's dressed the who's who of the world, from former US President Bill Clinton to actor Madhuri Dixit Nene, opened and shut a store in Paris, and sold her designs at popular multi-brand stores like London's Liberty and Paris' Galleries Lafayette.
What set her apart from her batchmates at Delhi's National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), including the late Rohit Bal, and Rina Dhaka—it was the institute's first batch—was her ability to bring together traditional and global aesthetics in a boho, flamboyant way.

s, frilly dresses, sari-inspired skirts, mesh bikinis under coats, and heavily embroidered salwar-kameez, which brought her Punjabi roots and rock 'n' roll together.
When her garments were presented in Mumbai in March as part of a special gala night, marking 25 years of the Lakme Fashion Week, her design vocabulary was loud and clear: All fun and lively, but sharp and clean.

, Beri talks about her work, being selfish, and why she doesn't plan to sell out to a large corporatised entity. Edited excerpts:
To create an immersive space where you can tell a brand story through narratives rather than expecting people to just come, shop and leave. It's also my way of challenging myself to do something that's new. A brand is not just about clothes.
Can you imagine doing the same thing every day for the rest of your life? You have to be a very bored and sad human being. Paris (couture week), Scherrer were my attempts at reinvention.
I wanted to give the French a real Indian experience and shock them with our beauty and tradition. My models walked barefoot with alta on their feet. I don't think it was a risk; I still don't think about what people will think.
A creative person can't get distracted by what others will say; you have to roll the dice and do what you believe in. I have blinkers on and I'm a very selfish person in that respect. When I started the brand, I didn't go with the purpose of filling a gap or becoming famous.
I joined NIFT because I wanted to be one of the 25 people they were going to select from across India—that was my challenge to myself. I had no idea what the fashion industry was about. I had planned to be a doctor because mine was a family of doctors. It was all just random.
I did fashion week when I felt like doing it. When I don't feel creative enough, I don't do fashion week. I am living my life on my terms and not by the norms of what social media, or what is expected of me.
I don't live by the rule book of life of a fashion designer. What's important to me is that I have to like what I do, even if nobody else likes it. Fashion, creativity, design, aesthetic is a very personal thing.
Of course, there have been many challenges along the way. There have been times when I've not sold clothes to somebody because they don't look good in it. My daughter thinks I'm a very bad salesperson because I refuse to let somebody buy something which will not look good on them. But I have always had customers; I was destiny's child.
Escape, for instance, is completely my indulgence to do what I believe in and do what I'm passionate about. And that's why it's completely out of the box.
Maybe I would have sold to a corporate, but then I've made a conscious decision not to sell my brand. I don't want to make underwear with Ritu Beri on it. Some people are driven by their P&Ls (profit and loss) and their commercials. Some people are driven by 10,000 stores.
I'm not a retail-oriented person. But I am still very much here, talking to you about my work, running my business, making fashion.
Today, people run wild because they want to be trendy and cool. They are dressing up all the time. They want to look good even when they wake up in the morning. When I started, people didn't really understand fashion. It wasn't fashion at that time; it was dressing for an occasion. Clients would come to me for a dress and I would suggest, 'I want to dress you in purple". They would say, 'I've never seen anyone wear purple. Give me something that everyone is wearing." Everyone wanted to follow the trend; they didn't create a trend.
There were designers trying to find a footing in India, and a young me was finding a footing in Paris.
I was flying high because my work in India was being applauded. And then I was exposed to the fashion industry of Paris. I told myself, 'If I'm really that good, let me do a show in Paris and get myself that kind of recognition".
It was a different trip altogether, and it spoiled me because after that, working in India was difficult. The fashion industry here was just starting. It was a different ballgame; they (the Parisians) had a way of doing things, professionalism, which we did not even understand then.
It was intimidating because the kind of people watching me were those who really understood fashion. Not like your Page 3 folks back home. The media there was exposed to the global fashion world. In India, we were educating our media about fashion at the time.
I have parents who always brought my head down. I live my own life judging myself. I'm a handful.

In the 1820s, French scientist Nicolas Clément introduced the term calorie. In the two centuries since, human beings' and society's relationship with food has changed drastically. Today the study of food is a complex subject that comprises not only nutrition and agriculture, but also has geopolitics, technology, climate change, caste and gender under its umbrella. Science Gallery Bengaluru unveils a year-long exhibition titled Calorie, that uses the lens of art to engage and reflect on these subjects. Who grows your food? Who gets to eat it? What does it do to your body? And, how much waste does it create? All these dialogues and more are being discussed by this exhibition, that is supported by the Gates Foundation, British Council and MacDermid Alpha Electronics Solutions. 'We have a strong cultural relationship to food, and food is also an object of scientific research,' says Dr. Jahnavi Phalkey, the founding director of the Science Gallery Bengaluru. 'Discussions about food have gained more currency in every domain of our life nowadays. Topics such as the science behind cooking, nutrition, Indian diet fads, and so on. As an informed citizen, whom do I take seriously?' The exhibition is an invitation to look beyond what is on our plate and to interrogate the systems, values, and choices that feed us. Some highlights from the exhibition Spread across two floors of the gallery, Calorie sees works by both international and Indian artists. Parag Kashinath Tandel's sensory installation, Food as an Archaeological Site: How to cook Bombay Duck looks at the fish, and the Koli fishing community of Mumbai, its migration patterns and pollution. The Bombay duck or Bombil fish holds relevance to the region's history. The artist uses materials like fishing gear, silicon rubber and dental plaster to create the work. Rajyashri Goody's Don't Lick It All Up looks at the relationship between food and caste. Using ceramics the artist recreates food, such as rice, meat and even earth as food , that is scavenged or begged for. It is accompanied by Omprakash Valmiki's book Joothan, and recipes extracted from Dalit memoirs. Orijit Sen's Mapping Mapusa Market, is an interactive installation about Goa's historic Mapusa Market. The Goa-based artist showcases the vibrant market through the mixed media work. Visitors can pick up questions and puzzles, the answers to which are in the installation. The Museum of Edible Earth is a project by artist titled Masharu. It looks at the communities around the globe who eat clay or soil. The exhibit has bottles of various clay varieties that people eat. In artist Surekha explores how Bengaluru's ragi-growing land has now been converted to a tech capital. She takes discarded keyboards and installs ragi plants in them. Dr. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, who is a board member of the gallery says, 'Calorie urges us to rethink how we use resources, grow crops, and adapt to climate change. Like our past work on carbon, it's a space for young minds and experts to question, experiment, and shape ideas that can influence policy. With the upcoming food lab, we aim to spark curiosity, inspire innovation, and drive a healthier, more sustainable future.' In the coming year, Calorie will also see food festivals, films screenings, workshops and lectures. The Calorie exhibition will run from August 2025 to July 2026. The Miss Universe India 2025 winner has been crowned. Meet Manika Vishwakarma from Rajasthan, who is all set to represent India at the global 74th Miss Universe competition in Thailand later this year. Crowned by Miss Universe India 2024 Rhea Singha, she beat the likes of Tanya Sharma from Uttar Pradesh (the first runner-up), and Mehak Dhingra from Haryana (the second runner-up), and Amishi Kaushik (the third runner-up) to win the coveted title. The finale round witnessed Manika answering a tough question: If she had to choose between advocating women's education or providing economic aid to poor families, what would she prioritise and why? She chose women's education, calling it the key to breaking cycles of poverty. Speaking with PTI right after her win, she expressed, 'To be honest, we always speak about struggle. But I would like to talk about the support that I have got. I always had a supportive family, community even though I come from a small town. I got great education. My teachers played a role in it. Who is Manika Vishwakarma? Originally from Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan and now living in Delhi, Manika, who was previously crowned the Miss Universe Rajasthan 2024, is known to be a dynamic personality with an inspiring portfolio. She is a student in the final year of her Political Science and Economics degree. Trained in classical dance, Manika also does painting. She was also honoured by the Lalit Kala Academy and the JJ School of Arts. She is also an advocate of neurodivergence as the founder of Neuronova – an initiative dedicated to raising awareness about conditions like ADHD. Madras High Court Judge to view 'Manushi' amid row over 37 cuts by censor board

Chennai: In an unusual step, the Madras High Court will directly review the Tamil film 'Manushi' following a bitter standoff between its makers and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Justice N. Anand Venkatesh, hearing a petition filed by the film's producer C. Vetri Maaran, on Tuesday ordered a private screening of the film on August 24 in Chennai to determine whether the censor board was justified in demanding 37 cuts. The film, produced by Vetri Maaran's Grassroot Film Company and directed by Gopi Nainar, known for his earlier work 'Aramm', stars Andrea Jeremiah in the lead role. It depicts the custodial torture of a woman suspected of being a terrorist, a subject that has already drawn attention since the release of its trailer by actor Vijay Sethupathi in April 2024. Trouble began in September 2024 when both the examining and reviewing committees of the CBFC refused to grant a censor certificate. They objected to the film because it portrayed the State in a "negative light" and claimed it blurred the lines between "leftist communism" and "mainstream communism". The rejection was challenged by Vetri Maaran in June this year, when he filed a writ petition alleging that the CBFC had acted without transparency by neither providing him an opportunity to defend the film nor spelling out specific objections. He further requested the constitution of an expert panel, including human rights activists, to re-examine the film. The High Court, while hearing that earlier petition, recorded the CBFC's submission that it had reviewed the film again and listed objectionable sequences. The petition was disposed of in June, with the court granting the producer liberty to pursue the matter further in law. However, Vetri Maaran returned to court with a fresh petition, arguing that the board's objections were excessive and arbitrary. He pointed out that even simple dialogues, such as the colloquial insult "saniyan", had been flagged for removal, which he argued violated the CBFC's guidelines. Responding to these claims, Justice Venkatesh remarked that the only way forward was to personally watch the film along with the censor board members to verify the validity of the objections. He directed that the screening be held at a private theatre on Dr. D.G.S. Dhinakaran Salai (formerly Greenways Road) and asked senior central government panel counsel A. Kumaraguru to ensure the attendance of CBFC officials. The High Court's decision to step into the censor dispute sets the stage for an extraordinary judicial review of 'Manushi'. The outcome of this screening will not only decide the film's release but could also influence wider debates on censorship and creative freedom in Indian cinema.
