I-Day Celebrations: Op Sindoor To Take Centre Stage As India Picks ‘Naya Bharat', ‘Nation First' As Themes
Last Updated: The highlight of the morning will be the presence of gallantry awardees of Operation Sindoor, who will be given places of honour on the Red Fort's historic ramparts The upcoming Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort on August 15 are set to be infused with a tribute to Operation Sindoor—India's recent successful mission against terror hotbeds in Pakistan and PoK following the Pahalgam attack. A senior government official involved in the planning said this year's theme will have 'Nation First', with Operation Sindoor taking centre stage. The messaging will underscore national unity, resilience, and a forward-looking vision of a 'Naya Bharat', the government has planned. To bring this vision, performances will take place at 142 locations across India, including 13 prominent sites in Delhi. Nearly 1,500 guests in traditional attire, along with a similar number of competition winners, are expected to attend. Special guests will arrive using public transport, with security arrangements adjusted accordingly to ensure smooth access. The celebrations will culminate in an evening band performance on August 15, featuring ensembles from the three armed services, NCC, and CAPFs, performing for a full hour in a grand musical tribute to the spirit of the nation. In a first, over 2,500 NCC cadets and 'Mera Bharat' volunteers will be seated in a choreographed formation spelling out 'Naya Bharat', visible from the prime minister's vantage point on the Red Fort. Behind them, large artistic view cutters will line the backdrop emblazoned with 'Nation First" and the logo of Operation Sindoor, which will also feature on all official invitation cards. Honouring Heroes The highlight of the morning will be the presence of gallantry awardees of Operation Sindoor, who will be given places of honour on the Red Fort's historic ramparts. 'These are the brave men and women who exemplify the spirit of selfless service. Their presence will remind the nation of what has been achieved—and at what cost." A Sky for Op Sindoor Also, helicopters will conduct a tricolour petal drop during the prime minister's address, with each chopper also carrying the national flag alongside the Operation Sindoor logo, further reinforcing the theme. Unprecedented Participation This year's guest list is among the most inclusive ever. According to the official, 6,500 special guests from 34 diverse categories have been invited to witness the ceremony. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ‘Abysmal failure of Modi': Opposition criticises Centre as Trump doubles tariffs on India
Opposition leaders on Wednesday said that United States President Donald Trump's decision to double tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 50% reflected an ' abysmal failure ' of diplomacy by the Narendra Modi-led Union government. 'While his [Trump's] tariff and penalty actions are simply unacceptable, the fact remains that they also reflect the abysmal failure of Modi's personalised and headline-grabbing style of huglomacy,' Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said on X. Recalling former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's stance against US pressure in the 1970s, Ramesh said: 'Instead of defaming, distorting, and denigrating her, Modi should shed his ego – if indeed that were possible – and take inspiration from the manner in which she stood up to the USA'. Prime Minister Modi went to the US and attended a Howdy Modi event in Houston in Sept 2019. President Trump was also present and Mr. Modi broke with all tradition and declared Ab ki Baar Trump Sarkar. In Feb 2020, President Trump was hosted by Mr. Modi to a gala Namaste Trump… — Jairam Ramesh (@Jairam_Ramesh) August 6, 2025 Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said that the tariff hike amounted to ' economic blackmail ' and a blatant attempt to pressure India into accepting an unfair trade deal. 'PM Modi better not let his weakness override the interests of the Indian people,' he said. Earlier on Wednesday, Gandhi had alleged that Modi's inability to confront Trump stems from the ongoing US investigation into the Adani Group – led by business tycoon Gautam Adani. Trump's 50% tariff is economic blackmail - an attempt to bully India into an unfair trade deal. PM Modi better not let his weakness override the interests of the Indian people. — Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) August 6, 2025 Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien questioned, 'now what will 56 inch say about the 50% Trump tariff", in a pointed remark aimed at the prime minister. 'And now we know why Modi and his creaky coalition are disrupting Parliament,' he added. 25 + 25 =50 Now what will 56 inch say about the 50% Trump tariff And now we know why Modi and his creaky coalition are disrupting Parliament — Derek O'Brien | ডেরেক ও'ব্রায়েন (@derekobrienmp) August 6, 2025 Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader MA Baby called the 50% tariff hike ' unilateral and illegal ', urging the Indian government to 'stand firm, defend our interests, and resist US pressure'. We condemn Trump's unilateral and illegal imposition of 50% tariffs on India. India must stand firm, defend our interests, and resist US pressure. US unilateralism endangers global stability. Time to build a global front against US bullying, economic coercion, and wars.… — M A Baby (@MABABYCPIM) August 6, 2025 Trump on Wednesday issued an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on goods imported from India for purchasing Russian oil. This raised the US tariff rate on Indian goods to 50%. On July 30, Washington had announced a 25% levy on goods imported from India as part of the so-called reciprocal tariffs on dozens of countries that have not finalised separate trade agreements with the US. The additional levy will take effect in 21 days. In response, New Delhi said on Wednesday that it was ' extremely unfortunate ' that the US had chosen to impose additional tariffs on India 'for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest'. 'We reiterate that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable,' said the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson. 'India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests."

Parliament Monsoon Session 2025 Live: Key bills on agenda as Houses resume today amid Opposition uproar over Bihar SIR
Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju, Mansukh Mandaviya, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Jyotiraditya Scindia and other MPs in the Lok Sabha during the Monsoon Session of the Parliament, in New Delhi on Wednesday. Parliament monsoon session live: Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha resume proceedings on Thursday amid uproar from the Opposition INDIA bloc demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. However, the Union government has rejected the demand, citing the matter is sub judice before the Supreme More Union minister Kiren Rijiju said in the House on Wednesday, 'We all know that the matter of SIR is under the consideration of the Supreme Court. The matter raised by the opposition is clearly sub judice, so a discussion on this issue cannot be held in this House.' He invoked Rule 186 and Rule 352 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business to support the BJP-led government's stand. Rijiju further stated that the Election Commission of India, being an autonomous constitutional body, could not be subjected to House discussions on its functioning. A similar ruling had been given a day earlier in the Rajya Sabha by deputy chairman Harivansh Singh. The row over Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR) intensifies after the poll body released the draft voter roll data from Bihar's SIR exercise, excluding over 65 lakh voter enumeration forms. This triggered criticism from the Opposition, who accused the ECI of acting under pressure from the BJP-led central government. In an adjournment notice to the Lok Sabha Secretary, Congress MP Manickam Tagore alleged large-scale deletions and 'unjustified inclusions' in the draft rolls. The demand to debate the issue has led to frequent adjournments in both Houses of Parliament this session. Key bills and legislative business in Parliament today As per the Lok Sabha agenda, several important items are scheduled for discussion and passage today: 1. Manipur GST Ordinance: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present an explanatory statement justifying the urgency behind promulgating the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025. 2. Anti-doping law changes: Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya will move amendments to the National Anti-Doping Act, 2022 for House approval. 3. Sports governance overhaul: Mandaviya will also introduce the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, aimed at reforming the administration of sports bodies in India. 4. SC/ST reports: BJP MP Faggan Singh Kulaste will table the fourth report of the committee on SC/ST welfare, focusing on reservations in services and housing by the DDA. 5. Education and inclusion: TDP MP Daggumalla Prasada Rao will present a report assessing the role of universities and autonomous institutions like IITs, IIMs, and central universities in socio-economic development and reservation implementation. 6. Defence standing committee reports: BJP MPs Radha Mohan Singh and Virendra Singh will submit reports on the government's response to past recommendations concerning the Defence Ministry's budget for 2024-25. Marking a significant day on Wednesday, Parliament passed two maritime sector bills in one day—a first for the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The Lok Sabha cleared the Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024.
