Asean's ambition of being world's fourth biggest economy by 2030 well within reach: Tengku Zafrul

The Sun12-06-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Asean's ambition to become the world's fourth-largest economy by 2030 is well within reach, provided the region sustains an annual gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate between 4% and 5%.
Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz highlighted the region's robust growth prospects at the official launch of the Asean Economic Community (AEC) Strategic Plan today.
'Our economists have thoroughly analysed the growth projections for all Asean economies under current conditions, and we are confident that the targets are indeed achievable,' he said.
Tengku Zafrul noted that the Asean Secretariat projects regional GDP growth at 4.7% for 2025, as presented at the latest Asean Economic Ministers' Meeting.
'But things are very dynamic. It depends on the global economic situation. The IMF (International Monetary Fund) will also produce their forecast of global growth,' he said, stressing the need for vigilance amid shifting external factors.
Tengku Zafrul emphasised the AEC Strategic Plan's role in keeping Asean's policies current and responsive to evolving business needs and emerging challenges.
'As the first instalment of this long-term vision, the plan serves as a comprehensive roadmap that outlines a clear and actionable path forward,' he said.
The plan has been carefully crafted to implement the economic aspects of the Asean Community Vision 2045, leveraging the region's vast opportunities and potential.
A key pillar of the plan is the establishment of a forward-looking digital economic framework, which is expected to double Asean's digital economy to US$2 trillion (RM4.5 trillion) by 2030. The focus on digital transformation, alongside sustained economic integration and resilience, positions Asean to not only achieve its growth targets but also to strengthen its global influence.
On the domestic front, Tengku Zafrul sees positive signals from foreign investors in Malaysia, with no indication of existing investors withdrawing their commitments despite ongoing global uncertainties. 'So far, no existing investors have expressed any intention to exit Malaysia. They remain committed to their investments, and no cancellations have been announced.'
However, he observed that new investors are adopting a more cautious, 'wait and see' approach, influenced by heightened geopolitical tensions – particularly between the United States and China – and broader global volatility.
Looking ahead, Tengku Zafrul said his trade negotiations in Washington on June 18 will focus on reducing tariffs on Malaysian exports.
'The negotiations are essentially to address the current tariff structure, where the US has imposed a 24% tariff on Malaysia. Our first goal is to bring that down.'
The second objective is to identify key sectors where Malaysia believes tariffs should be reduced even below the 10% floor, targeting industries important to both Malaysian exporters and the US economy.
In April, the US government announced new tariff measures affecting more than 60 countries, including Malaysia. The implementation of these tariffs has been paused for 90 days to allow room for negotiations.

Penang plans new tuna port to boost landings

BUTTERWORTH: Penang plans to build a new tuna and deep-sea fishing port in the state, which meets international standards, to increase tuna landings. State agrotechnology, food security and cooperative development committee chairman, Fahmi Zainol said the government has identified an area in Bagan Ajam for the new tuna port and discussions are already underway. "The state has earmarked land in Bagan Ajam for the development of the new port, with an estimated development budget of RM150mil to RM300mil. We are currently in talks with several investors for funding," he said. He added that, based on the timeline, the port could be completed within one-and-a-half to two years, pending technical approval from the district land office and other relevant agencies, as well as private sector allocation. "We hope the new port can revive the glory days of Penang's tuna industry, much like the 1990s," he said on Sunday (Aug 10). Fahmi highlighted several benefits of the new port, including its exclusive focus on tuna fishing, meaning tuna vessels will not have to compete for docking space with commercial ships. The port will also offer lower charges, as it will not operate on a commercial basis. Regarding competition, he said that tuna ships would not need to compete for docking space because the new port would be dedicated solely to tuna landings. It is expected to attract foreign tuna ships due to its user-friendly facilities. The new port will meet European Union (EU) standards and will include special facilities tailored specifically for tuna fishing, unlike existing ports, which offer general facilities and lack focus on tuna landings. "According to preliminary data from the Malaysian Fisheries Department, the total tuna landings in Penang last year were 431,000kg, valued at RM7.758mil. The main landing point is currently the Butterworth deep-water wharf," Fahmi said. He also noted that Malaysian vessels had landed tuna in Mauritius last year, with a total of 4,295,758kg of tuna, including 3,749,478kg from local vessels. So far this year, the total tuna landings in Penang, including foreign vessels, have reached 1,445,120kg, with an estimated value of RM26mil. Fahmi believes that with the dedicated tuna port in Bagan Ajam, tuna landings could increase by 30 to 50 per cent within five years of its operation. He also envisions Penang becoming a tuna processing hub, where foreign vessels can land their catch for processing before exporting it to Taiwan or Japan. - Bernama

Bangladesh chief advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus to undertake official visit to Malaysia

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 10 (Bernama): Chief Advisor of the Government of Bangladesh Dr Muhammad Yunus will undertake an official visit to Malaysia from Monday until Wednesday (Aug 11 to Aug 13, 2025), at the invitation of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a statement on Sunday, the Malaysian Foreign Ministry said the visit reciprocates Anwar's official trip to Bangladesh in October 2024, and several advisors and senior government officials will accompany Yunus. The ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, said that Yunus will be accorded an official welcoming ceremony at the Perdana Putra Complex on Aug 12, followed by a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister. "Both leaders are expected to review the progress of Malaysia-Bangladesh relations, particularly in the areas of trade and investment, labour, education, tourism and defence. "The discussions will also include regional and international developments of mutual interest,' the statement said. During the visit, Yunus and Anwar will witness the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) in the fields of defence, energy, strategic and international studies, capacity building in semiconductors, and trade promotion. An Exchange of Notes will also be signed in the areas of diplomatic training and higher education. The ministry said in honour of Yunus and his delegation, the Prime Minister will host an official luncheon at the Seri Perdana Complex. It said that on Wednesday (Aug 13), Yunus is scheduled to deliver a public lecture and be conferred an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Social Business by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The Chief Advisor will also attend a session with members of the Yunus Social Business Centre community and the university network, in a programme jointly organised by UKM. In 2024, total trade between Malaysia and Bangladesh reached RM13.35 billion (US$2.92 billion), an increase of 5.1 per cent compared with 2023. Bangladesh is Malaysia's second-largest trading partner and export destination in South Asia. Major Malaysian exports to Bangladesh include petroleum products, palm oil and chemicals, while imports comprise textiles, footwear, petroleum products and manufactures. It said the visit is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations and foster stronger cooperation in areas of mutual benefit, building upon the strong foundation established since diplomatic ties were forged in 1972. - Bernama

Malaysia, Russia strengthen ties through Sultan Ibrahim's landmark state visit

KAZAN: The state visit of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, to Russia, which concluded today, marked a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations. This was the fourth state visit conducted by Sultan Ibrahim since ascending the federal throne on Jan 31, 2024, following earlier visits to Singapore, China and Brunei. His Majesty arrived in Moscow on Aug 5 at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and became the first Malaysian Head of State to undertake a state visit to the federation since diplomatic ties were established in 1967. During an official meeting with Putin at the Moscow Kremlin, Sultan Ibrahim said Malaysia regards Russia as a trusted and important partner, adding that the visit reflected his sincere wish to strengthen ties and cooperation. It is this spirit of friendship, I believe, that will continue to shape the direction of the relationship between our two nations for the benefit of our people," His Majesty said. Meanwhile, Putin said that political dialogue between Moscow and Kuala Lumpur is well established, with continuous engagement among various agencies.
