Savage attack: Pack of stray dogs maul 5-year-old in Trimurti Nagar
2
Nagpur: What was supposed to be a carefree evening turned into a brutal ordeal for 5-year-old Nitya Mongre, who was mauled by a pack of 8-10 stray dogs outside her home in Deshpande Layout, Trimurti Nagar, around 5 pm on Friday.
The child, a daughter of daily wager-turned-security guard Shravan Mongre, suffered deep wounds on her neck and shoulders and is battling for recovery at Radhakrishna Hospital.
"I was on my way to my hometown Mandla in MP for Rakhi when I got the call. By the time I returned, my daughter was attacked savagely," said a distraught Mongre, who moved to Nagpur just four months ago seeking work.
At the time of the attack, the street was nearly deserted.
A kirana shop owner spotted the assault and raised an alarm. A passing motorcyclist then rushed in, using his bike to drive away the dogs and rescue the bleeding child.
Residents say this is not an isolated incident — attacks by stray dog have become disturbingly common in the city. "The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) collects taxes from us, but what about our safety? If our children can't even step outside without fear, who will take responsibility?" fumed local resident Mayur Kumbhare.

Mongre blamed both the unchecked street dog population and the rampant public feeding of strays. "People feed them milk, bread, biscuits, and chapatis right on the roadside. The dogs gather in large packs and attack passersby. There should be penalties for such irresponsible feeding of strays," he said.
The Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme — intended to sterilise and vaccinate stray dogs — is crawling at a snail's pace, leaving thousands of unsterilised animals roaming the streets.
Complaints to civic authorities continue to pile up with little visible action.
The incident has sparked fresh demands for urgent intervention — from aggressive sterilisation drives and stricter pet ownership rules to banning public feeding of strays in unsafe areas. "We don't want another family to go through this trauma," Mongre said.
NMC veterinary officer Dr Gajendra Mahalle told TOI a team was dispatched to the area soon after the incident, and two stray dogs from the pack were captured on Saturday morning. "We have initiated preventive measures to curb the menace in the locality," he added.

As cybercrime cases rise sharply, state strengthens its forensic response
Patna: With a manifold rise in the number of cybercrime cases in the last few years, the state has taken several steps to strengthen its response, including a plan to establish cyber forensic units in Patna and Rajgir. The state reported a 200% surge from 1,606 cybercrime cases in 2022 to 4,801 in 2023, which further rose to 5,712 in 2024. This year, 3,258 cases have been reported in the first five months only. The growing menace of cybercrime has also led to an overwhelming number of calls to the helpline number 1930, with approximately 25 lakh calls received in 2024-25. National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal also reported around 94,000 complaints in the past year, with nearly 80,000 related to financial fraud, said a senior officer at Bihar Police headquarters (PHQ) on Wednesday. Addressing the reporters at the PHQ, additional director general (ADG) of Crime Investigation Department (CID), Parasnath said, attributed the rise to an increasing use of the internet and digital transactions in the country. "The major types of cybercrimes being reported in Bihar are digital arrest, online fraud, bank scams, social media hacking, phishing, fake customer care calls and identity theft. Criminals often deceive people through phone calls, emails, social media, or fake websites to obtain their bank account details, passwords or OTPs, and then manipulate their funds," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo To combat this issue, the state's Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Patna has been actively working on cybercrime cases, conducting technical examinations of mobile phones, laptops, CCTV footage and other digital evidence. In 2024, the FSL handled 255 cases, resolving 135 of them. By July 2025, 206 cases were received for investigation, with reports provided for 75 cases so far. "The state govt has also approved the establishment of cyber forensic units in Patna and Rajgir. National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) in Gandhinagar has been appointed as a consultant for this project. The Bihar govt has allocated approximately Rs 13 crore for this initiative. A memorandum of understanding was signed on July 29, between the Bihar CID and NFSU," the ADG said. Under this agreement, the NFSU will provide technical assistance, consultancy services and training for the establishment of the cyber forensic laboratories. The agreement is set to last for five years. Parasnath said that additionally, NFSU will conduct specialised training programmes for Bihar police and forensic laboratory personnel to enhance their skills in handling cybercrime cases. "The collaboration is expected to expedite the investigation process and improve the quality of investigations, instilling a sense of fear among cybercriminals and contributing to effective crime control in the state," he added.
