Crypto Daybook Americas: Bitcoin Holds Above $100K as Iran, Israel Trade Blows
By Omkar Godbole (All times ET unless indicated otherwise)
Bitcoin's BTC continued choppy trading near January's highs of around $110,000 has some observers drawing parallels with 2021, when the bull market ended with twin peaks closer to $70,000. Not everyone agrees.
"The market dynamics between 2021 and today are completely different," Jeff Anderson, head of Asia at STS Digital, told CoinDesk. "BTC is evolving into a treasury asset, so it is very difficult to extrapolate chart patterns onto an asset undergoing massive structural changes."
The price action over the weekend was "encouraging," Anderson said, noting bitcoin's stability at around $105,000 even as Iran and Israel traded blows. As the old saying goes: If a market does not fall too much on bad news, it indicates big players are probably going long.
According to Singapore-based QCP Capital, BTC's resilient price is underpinned by continued institutional adoption.
"The market seems to have rediscovered its footing, particularly after BTC held above the key psychological threshold of $100K despite the initial shock," QCP said. "Crucially, Friday's modest 3% pullback paled in comparison to April last year, when BTC fell more than 8% amid similar Iran-Israel turmoil."
The market composure is evident from Volmex's 30-day implied volatility index (BVIV), which has declined to an annualized 42.7%, reversing Friday's spike to 46.12%.
Meanwhile, the spread between ether and bitcoin implied volatilities continues to widen, a sign that ether options are becoming costlier relative to bitcoin on Deribit. The relative richness of ether options presents a good opportunity for ether holders to generate additional yield by writing or selling options, according to Anderson.
Hong Kong-listed company Meme Strategy's share price surged over 20% after the company announced the acquisition of 2,440 Solana (SOL) tokens for approximately HK$2.9 million ($370,000). Corporate adoption of cryptocurrencies is rapidly moving beyond bitcoin and into other coins, such as ether ETH, sol SOL, and XRP XRP. However, last week, shares in Nasdaq-listed SharpLink dropped sharply after the company disclosed that it had bought ether.
The outlook for the broader altcoin market does not look so rosy as large unlocks loom.
"In the next 7 days, tokens with large one-time unlocks (over $5 million) include FTN, ZK, ARB, S, ID, APE, MELANIA, LISTA, and ZKJ. Tokens with large daily linear unlocks (over $1 million per day) include SOL, WLD, TIA, DOGE, TAO, AVAX, SUI, DOT, IP, MORPHO, ETHFI, and JTO," newsletter service LondonCryptoClub said.
In traditional markets, futures tied to the S&P 500 signaled a steady start to the week with gains as oil prices stabilized following Friday's surge. According to Barchart.com, credit markets are pricing in a six-level credit downgrade for the U.S., equating to a rating of BBB, just a notch above investment grade. Stay alert!

Trump just gave TikTok an extension on ban — here's what we know
Apparently, there is a calendar alert in the White House letting President Trump know when to delay enforcing the U.S. TikTok ban. Reportedly, Trump will sign a new executive order pushing the ban back by 90 days, more than the previous two 75-day delays from January and April, and the third time the president has delayed enforcement. The current delay is set to expire this Thursday (June 19). White Press secretary Karoline Levitt gave a statement to CNN revealing that the extension should be signed in the next few days. "President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark," Levitt said in her statement. "This extension will last 90 days, which the Administration will spend working to ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure." In May, Trump indicated during an interview with Meet the Press that he would delay the TikTok ban again, adding that he has a "warm spot" for the social media platform. At the time he claimed that a deal was in the works to keep TikTok available. Prior to the ban going into effect and since, Trump has repeatedly sought some American-based company or consortium to purchase the U.S. assets of TikTok. Mutliple offers have allegedly been put forward from Amazon to software giant Oracle and even the YouTuber MrBeast and Elon Musk. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. ByteDance, the Chinese parent company behind TikTok, has equally time and again asserted that it is not interested in selling. Additionally, any deal needs to be approved by the Chinese government, which reportedly pulled out of a potential deal in April due to Trump's imposed tariffs against Chinese goods that had reached 145% taxation at its highest. A lot has happened since the TikTok ban discussion kicked off in 2020 during Trump's first administration; here's a full timeline. The ban was cemented in place when President Joe Biden signed it into law in April of 2024. Since the law was signed, Trump changed his tune saying how much he liked the app and that he would seek to stop the ban. The bill signed by Biden was upheld by the Supreme Court this past January. From there Trump has been delaying the ban and allegedly attempting to strike a deal with ByteDance and China to see the app sold. Assuming nothing changes between now and September, which at this point it likely won't, we'll find out if Trump delays enforcement once again around the same time the iPhone 17 series launches.

Are cybersecurity stocks a new safety trade? What the Israel-Iran conflict shows
The Israel-Iran conflict has put geopolitics squarely on the radar of investors. In tense moments like these, the importance of owning cybersecurity stocks within a diversified portfolio is impossible to ignore. The overall market reaction to the attacks between the longtime regional foes has, admittedly, been fairly subdued since the strikes began late Thursday local time in New York. The S & P 500 had lost just 1% over the past three trading days. That hardly fits the description of a dramatic sell-off, as investors continue to bet that the conflict will not spillover into a broader entanglement that weighs on global growth. And yet, Club cybersecurity holdings CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks held up even better than the broader market and a basket of software peers in that stretch. CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks both entered Wednesday's session up more than 2% over the past three days. The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF, meanwhile, dropped about 0.4%. To be sure, in Wednesday's session, the broader market was higher and our cyber names were giving back some of their recent gains. Earlier Wednesday, President Donald Trump said outside the White House that Iran wanted to negotiate — comments that boosted stocks and sent oil prices lower. The trading action in oil is one way to measure how the market is assessing the geopolitical tensions. CRWD PANW YTD mountain CrowdStrike's stock performance versus Palo Alto Networks so far in 2025. This is not the first time that we've seen cybersecurity stocks hold up better than their tech-industry peers during periods of market disruption. The cohort acted defensively and outperformed the aforementioned software ETF earlier this year when Trump's tariff rhetoric began ramping up. In our minds, the relative stability of cybersecurity stocks amid market turbulence is part of a broader, long-term trend rather than a flash in the pan. The reason is that cybersecurity has become indispensable in today's digital landscape, particularly during geopolitical unrest. Consider the findings of the World Economic Forum's 2025 cybersecurity outlook. "Nearly 60% of organizations state that geopolitical tensions have affected their cybersecurity strategy," according to the report, which was published in January. Additionally, one in three CEOs that responded to the survey said "cyber espionage and loss of sensitive information/intellectual property (IP) theft" is a top concern. And finally, 72% of respondents reported heightened cyber risks, driven partly by the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence, which empowers cybercriminals, with ransomware remaining a persistent threat. This environment signals strong demand for advanced cybersecurity solutions, which CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks have. Both companies are capitalizing on mounting security concerns across the corporate and government worlds. That leads investors like us to believe that both Palo Alto and CrowdStrike are well-positioned to deliver long-term value while offering stability amid volatility in the near term. Pro-Israel group hacks Iran crypto exchange for over $90 million, firm says
An Israel-linked group appears to have hacked Iran's largest crypto exchange, Nobitex, transferring more than $90 million out of crypto wallets, according to the blockchain analytics firm Elliptic. The Israeli hacking group, known as Gonjeshke Darande or Predatory Sparrow, claimed early Wednesday that they had conducted cyberattacks against Nobitex, just one day after claiming responsibility for the hack of a state-owned Iranian bank. The latest hack comes amid increasing tensions between Iran and Israel, as the two sides volley attacks at one another following Tel Aviv's surprise attack on Tehran's nuclear facilities and missile sites last week. The hacked Nobitex funds are currently held by addresses that feature explicit language taking aim at Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), underscoring the motivations behind the hack, according to Elliptic. The funds appear to have been effectively destroyed by the hacking group. Elliptic noted it is 'computationally infeasible' to create addresses with such long text strings, meaning the hackers likely do not have the private keys to access the funds. 'It's technically infeasible for them to have the private keys for these addresses, so the funds are lost,' Tom Robinson, co-founder of Elliptic, said in a statement. 'You can create crypto addresses containing specific text, but it becomes exponentially more computationally expensive as the length of the text increases,' he continued. 'This enabled the hacker to send a clear message, but at a very high cost.' The Israeli hacking group said it was targeting Nobitex for facilitating terrorism financing and sanctions evasion. Two IRGC operatives, who have been sanctioned by the U.S. for their ties to ransomware operations, have used the crypto exchange, according to Elliptic. The blockchain analytics company has also identified interactions between Nobitex and wallets associated with Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the Houthis — all of which are designated as terrorist groups by the U.S. government. The potential for terrorist groups and other sanctioned entities to use crypto exchanges to evade restrictions has long been a concern about the industry. However, crypto advocates often argue it is easier to track and block illegal transactions over the blockchain.
