Lancelin locals trigger alarm on coastal erosion as coastline washes away and wild weather predicted

7NEWS5 days ago
A popular Aussie fishing and tourist town has pleaded for help as an aggressive ocean washes away their tiny coastal home before their eyes.
The erosion crisis in Lancelin, 125km north of Perth, has worsened since 7NEWS visited just over two months ago and cast a major cloud over the future of the getaway known for its white sand and relaxed seaside lifestyle.
Locals say more than 10m of land has vanished since May and they seriously fear for their homes and businesses.
Anxiously watching the shoreline inch towards his pub, Lancelin Sands Hotel owner of three years Glen Trebilcock has pleaded for emergency funding and specialist technical assistance from the state government in a petition supported by 800 signatures.
'Without immediate intervention, the safety of the foreshore and the integrity of essential coastal infrastructure remain at serious risk,' he said.
'We strongly believe that a retreat is not a viable solution.'
The local shire has also written to WA Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti for help but says they are yet to hear back.
'We're not asking for millions of dollars at the moment, we're just asking for a little bit of financial assistance,' Gingin Shire President Linda Balcombe told 7NEWS.
'We're a very small shire with only about 6000 ratepayers and we've got a big coastline that we have to protect.
'If we're protecting private businesses and private houses we also need to come up with a model that everybody's putting something into this — shire, landowners and the state, and even federal government. It's an Australia-wide problem.'
Balcombe said more than 25 metres of coastline had been eaten up in some of the worst-hit places in the last year.
'Of course (the locals) are nervous. They live here, there's a lot of value in their properties (and) angst if they're going to get inundated,' Balcombe told 7NEWS.
'I don't blame them.'
Thousands of tourists are drawn to Lancelin's white sand and picturesque water every year, but Trebilcock said the erosion issue that threatens to swallow up their slice of paradise is having an impact on visitor numbers.
'Six tour companies that used to come through every day, they've all disappeared. They bypass and they just go directly up to Jurien (Bay),' he told 7NEWS.
A lookout that has sat by his hotel for decades and is a sought-after stop with international selfie-hunters will be torn down next week due to safety concerns.
Former WA opposition leader Shane Love said he had raised a grievance in parliament and followed up again in budget estimates.
'I've said this a number of times in parliament already, the state government need emergency funds and the ability to respond urgently,' he said.
The WA Government told 7NEWS it is 'aware of the issues and is actively looking at options to assist'.
A weekend cold front set to smash the coast and threatens to eat further into the remaining waterfront.
'The seas will really pick up. We're expecting quite high swells ... well up over five metres behind the system as well,' Bureau of Meteorology WA manager James Ashley said.
Some experts fear there is little that can be done at this point.
'In the case of Lancelin, it's built in the wrong place. It's built in an eroding coastline,' UWA coastal oceanography professor Charitha Pattiaratchi told 7NEWS in May.
'It's probably controversial — [but the best thing to do would be] retreat, do nothing.'

Nicole Kidman reportedly files residency application for Portugal with no mention of husband Keith Urban

Aussie movie star Nicole Kidman has lodged an application for residency in Portugal, multiple news outlets in the European country have claimed. Portuguese media outlet SIC Notícias broke the story on Tuesday and claimed the Oscar-winning actress has submitted residency paperwork to the country's Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA). According to SIC Notícias, Kidman is reportedly house hunting around the Costa Terra Golf & Ocean Club in Comporta. The luxury development is popular with global A-listers including George Clooney and Paris Hilton and is also a base for royal family member Princess Eugenie. The sunny European nation is popular with celebrities and jetsetters because of its ideal climate, favourable tax benefits and relative privacy. Meanwhile, Portuguese TV network TVI claims they have confirmed with Lisbon City Council that Kidman and Keith Urban already own an apartment in the Portuguese capital. The revelation comes after Kidman was recently spotted arriving at the Tires airfield in Cascais, a wealthy seaside enclave just outside of Lisbon. The Dead Calm star and her country star husband own an impressive globe-spanning property portfolio spanning Sydney, Los Angeles and Nashville. In Sydney, the couple own six combined apartments overlooking Sydney Harbour in Milson's Point. The Kidman-Urban clan also own a breathtaking 45-acre rural property called Bunya Hill in the Southern Highlands, complete with cattle and alpacas. Earlier this year, Kidman told the Hollywood Reporter she planned to spend 2025 taking a break after shooting multiple film and TV projects simultaneously. "I was much more out there last year; this year I have Holland, I have Nine Perfect Strangers, and then I'm off for the rest of year. So, oh well!' she said. In the past year, Kidman has starred in films A Family Affair, Babygirl, Spellbound and Holland and TV projects like The Perfect Couple, Lioness and Nine Perfect Strangers. The movie star's pledge to take time off appeared to be short-lived and Kidman is currently back on set with Sandra Bullock to film a sequel of the cult classic Practical Magic.

England's only tour game ahead of the Ashes will be against England A

England have opted against a suite of tour games to prepare for the Ashes and will instead play against themselves in Perth to prepare for November's opening Test. The only official practice match for the tourists in their quest to regain the urn will be against an England A side at Lilac Hill in a three-day red-ball match. Touring teams have long abandoned multiple matches against state teams given the packed nature of the cricket schedule. Last summer India played a single intra-squad match, behind closed doors and amid much secrecy, at the WACA. No media or outside viewers were allowed in, although the public parkland at Lilac Hill won't afford England the same privacy. There is potential for the tourists to play a two-day fixture in Canberra against the Prime Minister's XI in between the first Test and the second match at the Gabba, but that will be the extent of games outside the five-match international series. The news cames as Cricket Australia confirmed the Lions would play three fixtures on their tour of Australia will run a the same time as the Ashes, giving England a larger cohort of player in Australia at the same time. England could also choose to play some unused Test squad members if they are not selected in the XIs for the first two Tests. 'The reciprocal A series against the England Lions is important for Australian cricket giving our players the chance to perform against high calibre opposition,' CA head of cricket operations and scheduling Peter Roach said. 'We're confident this series will complement what should be a fiercely contested Ashes series and have strong benefits for both countries. 'It is a big year of Australia A cricket opportunities with the recently completed series against Sri Lanka A and tour of India in September before the Lions series.' Australian selectors will have four full rounds of Sheffield Shield cricket to get players tuned up for the Ashes, offering the chance for batters to seize an opening spot with Sam Konstas no lock to keep his spot after failing in the West Indies.
