Fresh off World Cup success, Divya Deshmukh continues giant-slaying run

India Todaya day ago
India's 19-year-old chess prodigy Divya Deshmukh has continued her remarkable run of form by storming into the quarter-finals of the 2025 Women's Speed Chess Championship. Facing world No. 7 Lei Tingjie of China, Divya produced a dominant performance across all formats, blitz and bullet, to secure a resounding 10–3 victory. Her precision, speed, and ability to convert even the smallest of advantages left her opponent struggling to find a foothold.advertisementThe format tests players in a mix of time controls: 5+1, 3+1, and 1+1 games. Divya thrived in each, winning eight games, drawing four, and conceding just one loss. The victory sets up a tantalising quarter-final clash against Hou Yifan, the four-time world champion and current world No. 1.The Speed Chess Championship, an online event, marks Divya's first competitive appearance since winning the Women's World Cup last month. It appears she has already put behind her the highs of the biggest win of her career to focus firmly on the next challenge.SLAYING CHINESE GREATS
This latest triumph continues a growing trend: Divya's ability to consistently outplay top Chinese opponents, long regarded as the dominant force in women's chess. The pattern was most vividly displayed at the 2025 Women's World Cup in Batumi, where she produced one of the most stunning tournament runs in recent memory.Seeded 15th, she began her campaign with solid wins before facing a string of Chinese heavyweights. In the round of 16, she upset world No. 2 Zhu Jiner in a tense rapid tiebreak. In the semi-finals, she defeated former women's world champion Tan Zhongyi in commanding fashion, displaying a blend of aggressive preparation and endgame tenacity. She capped off the event by edging out Indian legend Koneru Humpy in the final, securing the World Cup title, the Grandmaster title, and a place in the 2026 Candidates Tournament. Her ability to break through the Chinese wall is no accident. Divya has shown an exceptional knack for preparing against their structured, theory-heavy style, often steering games into dynamic and less-charted territories where her tactical vision shines. She has also demonstrated immense psychological resilience, never appearing overawed by an opponent's reputation. Her success extends beyond individual events. In recent team competitions, she has delivered crucial wins against Chinese boards, including a rapid victory over Hou Yifan in a blitz match. When asked if she had discovered a particular weakness against Chinese players, Divya was characteristically modest.'I don't know if it's about them, really. All of them are very strong players. But I didn't do anything new—I just kept fighting until the end. I think that's what helped me,' she told India Today last month.advertisementOff the board, Divya's meteoric rise has made her a symbol of inspiration. Her return to Nagpur after her World Cup win was marked by a celebratory homecoming, with crowds lining the streets. Known for her calm demeanour, she credits her success to disciplined training, a supportive family, and a mindset that treats every game as a learning opportunity. It's no surprise that her childhood coach, International Master Srinath Narayanan, likens her nerves to MS Dhoni.'She has this uncanny ability to rise in crunch situations—like Dhoni pulling off a win in the final over,' he told news agency PTI. 'Divya turns up when it matters most. She performs incredibly well under pressure in big games. I've seen that in her since 2018.'A tough test against Hou Yifan awaits her on Thursday, but the 19-year-old will be determined to put her best foot forward and book a place in the semi-finals of the Speed Chess Championship.- EndsMust Watch

'I pray India refuse to play us in Asia Cup. Itna bura maarenge vo...': Basit Ali spits raw venom after drubbing vs WI

Pakistan endured a crushing collapse against the West Indies in the ODI series decider at Tarouba, crumbling to a mere 92 while chasing 295. After taking an early 1-0 lead with a comfortable five-wicket win in the series opener, Mohammad Rizwan's side imploded in the second match and capitulated spectacularly in the decider. India are scheduled to meet Pakistan in the Asia Cup match on September 14(Files/AP) The batting order disintegrated from the outset, losing three top-order wickets within the first three overs. Openers Saim Ayub, Abdullah Shafique, and captain Rizwan all departed without scoring, leaving the chase in tatters. Babar Azam, too, fell cheaply for just 9, while Salman Agha offered little resistance before being dismissed for 30. Pakistan's innings lasted just 29.2 overs, with Jayden Seales being the tormentor-in-chief, registering brilliant figures of 6/18 in 7.2 overs. Following the embarrassing collapse and a heavy defeat, the former Pakistan cricketers reacted furiously; while Shoaib Akhtar took a ferocious dig at the batting lineup, stating they can't take fly home pitches everywhere, Basit Ali went a step further. Referring to the upcoming Asia Cup amid rising India-Pakistan political and diplomatic tensions, Basit expressed his hope that the BCCI refuses to take part in the match, saying it would spare Pakistan an on-field humiliation. 'I pray India refuse to play against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, just like how they did at the World Championships of Legends. Itni buri tarah maarenge na vo, ki aapki soch hai (They will beat us so badly you can't even imagine),' Basit said on The Game Plan YouTube channel. The host had a wry laugh at this remark, and further commented that Pakistan don't even stand a chance against Afghanistan with the way things stand. To this, Basit replied, 'If we lose to Afghanistan, no one would care much in this country. But everyone goes mad the moment you lose to India.' Asia Cup in T20 format While Pakistan's performance in the final ODI does warrant criticism, it's worth noting that the Asia Cup will take place in T20 format, where the team has been relatively stronger. Pakistan had previously edged West Indies 2-1 in the T20I series, led by Salman Agha. None of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan featured in the T20I series, a trend which is likely to continue in the Asia Cup. The Asia Cup, to be held in the UAE, serves as preparation for the next year's T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

Virat Kohli hints at making a return to India's ODI squad ahead of the Australia series

Virat Kohli Former India captain Virat Kohli, who announced his retirement from T20I and Tests, is getting ready for the Australia series in October after the Bangladesh ODI series scheduled for August was postponed. Kohli recently shared a picture from an indoor net practice, indicating that he is ready to play the ODI format again since his last appearance at the Champions Trophy. Kohli took to his Instagram story and shared a picture with Naeem Amin, the assistant coach for the Gujarat Titans while training, 'Thanks for helping out with the hit, brother. Always lovely to see you,' he wrote Kohli liked a post related to his ODI return A fan page reposted the picture, suggesting Kohli is training ahead of the Australian ODIs, and the post was liked by Kohli's official account. Virat Kohli is excited for the ODIs. Joke's on those who dared to question his dedication for the game. — Pari (@BluntIndianGal) August 13, 2025 Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will continue playing in the ODI format Both Kohli and Rohit Sharma will continue playing in the ODI format after stepping away from T20Is and Tests, with Rohit also continuing as the team's captain. However, the BCCI is proceeding cautiously about their long-term ODI plans, with age becoming a key factor in the discussions. Rohit will be 40 and Kohli will be 39 by the time of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Their value to the team is nevertheless highlighted by their combined ODI record of 83 centuries and overs 25,000. Even though India no longer depends on them in other formats, they still have a big influence in 50-over cricket. India's next ODI assignment is the Australia series, which is scheduled for October 19–25. Both veterans are anticipated to be key players.

Former Norway coach Martin Sjögren named coach of the NWSLs Chicago Stars

Oslo, Aug 14 (AP) The Chicago Stars have named former Norway women's national team coach Martin Sjögren as the National Women's Soccer League club's new head coach. Sjögren will join the Stars starting with the 2026 season after wrapping up the current season as head coach for Hammarby in the Swedish Damallsvenskan, the Stars announced Wednesday. 'For me, this position as head coach of the Chicago Stars is a new challenge in a new country, in a new league," he said in a video posted to social media Wednesday. 'But to me the NWSL has always been a very interesting league. It's one of the most competitive leagues in the world, if not the most competitive. And there's so many things happening in the U.S. when it comes to women's football, and it's growing really, really fast." Sjögren coached Norway's women from 2016 through 2022, leading the team to the quarterfinals of the 2019 Women's World Cup. Norway also played in the Women's European Championships in 2017 and 2022 under Sjögren. Sjögren's longtime assistant and friend, Anders Jacobson, has been named interim coach through this year and will join the team in the coming weeks, the team said. Current interim coach Ella Masar will continue as an assistant coach. 'This appointment is the result of a rigorous, data-driven hiring process and deep discussions about our soccer identity, methodology and long-term vision. We were not just looking for top-level coaches but for people with exceptional human values, leaders who align with our ambition to build a high-performance environment rooted in trust, unity, and a true sense of family," Stars general manager Richard Feuz said. The Stars fired coach Lorne Donaldson after winning just one of six games to start the NWSL season. Donaldson, who led the Jamaican national team to the knockout round at the 2023 Women's World Cup, was in his second season with Chicago. The Stars went 10-14-2 in his first season and made the playoffs. The Stars are currently 1-9-5 and sit second-to-last in the NWSL standings.
