Lucy Markovic, who competed in ‘Australia's Next Top Model,' dies at 27
Fashion model Lucy Markovic, who first gained popularity as a competitor on 'Australia's Next Top Model' before professionally modeling for luxury brands including Givenchy and Versace, has died.
Elite Model Management NYC, which represented the model, announced Markovic's death Thursday on Instagram. Markovic, remembered as a 'bright shining light,' died after a 'brave battle' with a rare brain condition, the management firm said. She was 27.
Markovic suffered a brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM), which the Mayo Clinic describes as a 'tangle of blood vessels that creates irregular connections between arteries and veins in the brain.' A brain AVM disrupts the vital exchange of blood between the lungs and heart. It's unclear what causes a brain AVM.
In Thursday's announcement, Elite also remembered Lucy for her 'incredibly dry sense of humor,' her warm and magnetic personality, and her love for modeling.
'She brought elegance, strength, and beauty to her work,' the statement continued. 'But more than that, she brought herself — her warmth, her laughter, her light.'
Markovic's sister Jelena Markovic also confirmed the model's death Friday morning. In a joint Instagram post with her sister's account, Jelena mourned her sister, writing, 'words will never express the mark you left on all the people around you.' Jelena said she could not believe that her 'little Bambi twin' was gone and that her heart was broken 'in an infinity of pieces.'
Lucy Markovic of Australia's Gold Coast first showcased her modeling abilities as a 16-year-old contestant on the ninth season of 'Australia's Next Top Model' in 2015. Markovic proved herself a strong competitor in her debut, taking the top slot in the first catwalk challenge. When Markovic wasn't the top-ranked model of the season, she was consistently safe. She only faced the threat of elimination twice across 12 episodes, including in the finale. Ultimately Whittlesea's Brittany Beattie won the the title of 'America's Next Top Model' and a spread in Elle Australia.
'I'm just really proud of myself right now. This is what I wanted to show you guys from the start, that I could do this,' she told judges in the finale.
Despite losing to Beattie, Markovic's modeling journey was far from over.
In the years since, the model has posed for brands including Armani, AllSaints, Cult Gaia and Staud. She was also featured in Vogue Singapore, Vogue Korea and Vanity Fair Italia. Throughout her career, Markovic also appeared in fashion campaigns alongside modern modeling's most notable stars including Bella Hadid and Alex Consani.
Before her death, Markovic sought to release her fitness app, her sister said on Instagram. Jelena shared behind-the-scenes footage of Markovic posing in active wear while lifting weights. 'Your ambitions were always so high,' Jelenea said.
'In fact your dream was to be a Victoria Secret angel, and now you will be walking with all the Angels in heaven. They will all be jealous of you!,' Jelena wrote. 'We will keep your happiness and energy in our hearts and will focus on all the amazing moments you had in your life. For now, fly free, enjoy your journey and we will see each other again on the other side. We love you Lucy, forever.'

Addison Rae is ready to reintroduce herself. Since amassing more than 88 million followers on TikTok, the 24-year-old has effectively pivoted her career from social media influencer to full-blown pop girl — and her self-titled, debut studio album, Addison, released on June 6, is proof of that. Rae, a former cheerleader from Louisiana, is living out her nostalgic "noughties" dream — and she's making music that captures that feeling. On Addison, Rae serves up her now signature trip-hop meets synth-pop sound. 'Diet Pepsi,' Rae's first release since 2021's 'Obsessed,' marked a turning point in the young star's career: It showcased Rae's artistry at its most sophisticated. Addison's 12-song tracklist, through its exploration of fantasy, fearlessness and doing what feels good and right for you, solidifies Rae as both a student of pop divas past and the genre's latest 'it' girl. 'And even with posting and feeling like, 'Okay, well, I really want to make sure I give this the credit and the energy that it deserves.' The album's this many days away' … Sometimes I get onto myself about that and I'll be like, 'No, it deserves that.'' Focusing on her passions was more of a risk than a given. She joined Charli onstage during her 'Sweat Tour' stop at New York City's Madison Square Garden that September before dropping 'Aquamarine,' her single about transformation and rebirth, in October, followed by its remix 'Aquamarine/Arcamarine' in November. Rae ushered in the new year with the release of her third single off the album 'High Fashion' in February 2025. On the track, Rae sees no appeal in embarking on a drug-fueled bender and instead opts for the finer things in life: a closet full of couture. She sings, with her soft, atmospheric vocals atop a darker, synthier sound, 'I don't need your drugs/I'd rather get high fashion.' After gracing the cover of Vogue France, the singer dropped her fourth single in April 2025. With 'Headphones On,' Rae gives listeners a peek into how she relies on music as an escape from crisis and reality. The 24-year-old singer then reunited with Charli XCX at Coachella, where she performed the 'Von Dutch' remix. 'Fame Is a Gun,' Rae's fifth and final single — and music video — ahead of album release day, hit streaming platforms in May 2025. The track's artwork is a photo of a young Rae posing with sunglasses indoors, likely a nod to the fact that Rae has always been drawn to living a glamorous life. New S.F. Pride festival loses headliner weeks before event
Oakland R&B singer Kehlani has pulled out of the lineup for San Francisco's new Pride celebration, SoSF, leaving the event without a main headliner three weeks before it's scheduled to take place. The festival, a new one-day block party, announced that the 'After Hours' singer has decided to no longer be a part of the line-up' in an Instagram post shared on Thursday, June 5. Organizers also announced that the event, set for June 28, will no longer be held at Pier 80's warehouse. Instead, it will take place outdoors at 900 Marin Street, just across the street from the original location. The Chronicle has reached out to SoSF for more information. 'Nasty' singer Tinashe and Grammy-winning pop artist Kim Petras remain on the updated bill as headliners, and German DJ and Portola Festival alum Horsegirl has been added as a special guest. Still others on the festival's roster appear to be in flux. San Francisco DJ Adam Kraft, the 'Reparations' drag show and event company Fake and Gay have also dropped out of the lineup according to an Instagram story post from Kraft, which Fake and Gay then reposted. Kraft teased that a statement on the artists' decision to drop out would be 'prepared soon.' None of these acts are listed on the SoSF website anymore. Kehlani has been under fire recently for her stance on the war in Gaza. Her performance at Cornell University's end-of-school-year Slope Day was nixed by the school's president in April due to what he deemed 'antisemitic, anti-Israel sentiments." The artist has frequently used her platform to speak out in opposition against Israel and Zionism. She included keffiyehs, traditional Arabic scarves often associated with Palestinian identity, in the music video for her 2024 song 'Next 2 U,' which also uses the phrase 'long live the intifada,' which translates to 'uprising' or 'resistance' in Arabic. The term is also considered, by some, as a call for violence against Jews. Though the Oakland School for the Arts alum quickly responded via an Instagram video, refuting accusations of antisemitism by clarifying that she is 'anti-genocide' and 'anti the actions of the Israeli government,' more concert cancellations followed.
