‘The Beatles Anthology' Expands With a 9th Episode and 4th Volume

New York Times9 hours ago
The Beatles are back: Unreleased demos and never before seen footage are coming later this fall.
The fourth volume of the band's 'Anthology Collection' of recordings (including 13 new demos) is arriving, along with a capstone episode to the 1995 eight-part documentary and a 25th-anniversary edition of 'The Beatles Anthology' book.
The album, 'Anthology 4,' includes new mixes of 'Free as a Bird' and 'Real Love.' The release will accompany remastered versions of the first three 'Anthology' albums as well, and will be available Nov. 21.
In the documentary series, fans followed the Fab Four — John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr — from childhood through the 1960s, as they rose to fame before their breakup in 1970.
Now, 30 years later, the ninth episode will stream on Disney+ beginning Nov. 26. It features footage of Paul, George and Ringo from 1994 and 1995 as they were creating the 'Anthology' film.
Earlier this year, the Beatles won a Grammy for 'Now and Then,' which was billed as their last song. Using advanced audio technology, John's voice was isolated from a demo he recorded not long before he was killed outside the Dakota in Manhattan in 1980, and blended with the others to make 'Now and Then.'
The unreleased music and new episode will also be accompanied by a 25th-anniversary edition of 'The Beatles Anthology' book, which features interviews with all four members and close collaborators, including the former producer George Martin, the road manager Neil Aspinall and the Beatles' spokesman, Derek Taylor. The illustrated book will be published on Oct. 14, ahead of the album and film.
Martin curated the original three volumes of the music anthology. His son Giles Martin is responsible for remastering the work, after his father's death in 2016. He also curated the fourth volume.

Strictly Come Dancing replacement announced as NI actor Kristian Nairn pulls out

The replacement has been announced for Strictly Come Dancing after an actor and DJ from Northern Ireland pulled out for "medical reasons." Less than a week ago, Kristian Nairn was announced as the final celebrity to join the upcoming series of the hit BBC show when it returns next month. On BBC's The One Show, the Lisburn actor and DJ's replacement was announced as Emmerdale star Lewis Cope, known for his role as series regular Nicky Milligan, who in an explosive storyline was revealed to be a member of the series' iconic Tate and Dingle families. I've always been a fan of the show and cannot wait to get started!' In a statement issued on Thursday afternoon, a spokesperson for BBC Strictly Come Dancing said: "Due to medical reasons, actor and DJ Kristian Nairn has sadly withdrawn from the upcoming series of Strictly Come Dancing." Sharing his own statement, Kristian said: "With a heavy heart, I have to step back from this season of Strictly Come Dancing due to unexpected medical reasons. I was truly looking forward to the journey, and I'm deeply sorry to disappoint anyone who was looking forward to seeing me on the dance floor. "Thank you all for your support, and I will be back on my feet very soon, in every sense. Love to all, Kristian." Lewis was nominated for the Rising Star Award at the 2023 National Television Awards for the role. Away from the Dales, Lewis' other television work includes roles in Vera, Miss Sidhu Investigates, and Hetty Feather and he previously worked with David Beckham on an advertising campaign. BBC Boss Promises ‘Doctor Who' Will Carry On—With or Without Disney

The end of Ncuti Gatwa's run as Doctor Who was confusing for multiple reasons. But beyond the 'Wait, what's Billie Piper doing here?' of that regeneration scene is a larger question about the show's future. With no additional seasons scheduled, no updates on the BBC-Disney partnership that powered the Fifteenth Doctor's seasons, and the most recent showrunner Russell T Davies distancing himself from any Who-related inquiries, fans have been left wondering if, not when, the show will return. Today, there's a flicker of new hope. According to the Radio Times, the BBC's Chief Content Officer, Kate Phillips, addressed the Doctor Who conundrum at the ongoing Edinburgh TV Festival. 'Any Whovians out there, rest assured—Doctor Who is going nowhere,' she said, then made reference to the upcoming Doctor Who spin-off, a limited series set in the same universe as the show but not featuring the Doctor character. 'Disney has been a great partnership and it continues with The War Between the Land and the Sea next year,' Phillips said. 'But, going forward, with or without Disney, Doctor Who will still be on the BBC.' For emphasis, she added, 'The TARDIS is going nowhere.' The Radio Times also quotes the director of BBC Drama, Lindsay Salt, as saying the network will 'always stay committed' to Doctor Who, though there's no update beyond that. The takeaway is that the BBC isn't closing the door on future seasons of Doctor Who—a show it was making for decades before Disney came around and enhanced its budget and broadcast reach. No shock there. The Doctor will return; that much seems certain. But it also seems everything else remains tangled in time and space for now. Want more io9 news?
