Shaharizukirnain had asked how much research had been done on LGBT individuals who marry partners and what initiatives the government was taking to address the matter.
LGBT – an acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender – is an umbrella term referring to people whose sexual orientations or gender identities differ from the heterosexual and cisgender norm.
In Malaysia, same-sex sexual acts and gender nonconformity are criminalised under both federal and state syariah laws.
Section 377A of the Penal Code, which applies to all residents, prohibits 'carnal intercourse against the order of nature', interpreted as same-sex sexual conduct.

Terengganu MB calls for federal-state special grant for direct state funding
KUALA LUMPUR: An opposition lawmaker has proposed that the federal government introduce a federal-state special grant under a new act to enable direct funding to states for priority projects. Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar (PN–Kemaman) said this would allow funds to be channelled directly to states without leakages, bureaucratic hurdles, or delays from federal agencies. "Malaysia should consider moving towards a model of cooperative federalism and fiscal federalism, where solving the people's problems is prioritised over constitutional boundaries that were originally designed to prepare the nation for independence in 1957. "This would require a new approach to policy coordination, project implementation, and resource distribution, including a broader allocation of taxation powers so that states can obtain greater revenue compared to the current framework," he said during the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP)in the Dewan Rakyat today. Ahmad Samsuri said state governments have limited powers to collect taxes, especially when compared to the corporate and personal income taxes collected by the federal government. "The 13MP should also serve as an opportunity to enhance the powers of the states, or to implement decentralisation in certain aspects and to a certain extent, so that states can progress more swiftly without being influenced by partisan political sentiments. "This is to ensure that if the political alignment of the state and federal governments differs, it does not affect the state's development or the well-being of its people," he said. He also suggested the establishment of a National Development Transformation Commission to review the effectiveness of past Malaysia Plans, audit the current grant system, and explore new mechanisms such as the Equalisation Payment and Fiscal Stabilisation Programme, which have proven effective in countries such as Germany, Canada, and Australia. On other developments, Ahmad Samsuri proposed the establishment of a National Rare Earth Elements (NREE) Centre of Excellence to accelerate the growth of the industry in Malaysia. "The industry is now headed for expansion in five areas, namely mining, refining and separation, development of midstream and downstream industries, preparation for export products, and environmental protection. "This is a positive move, given that the industry is expected to generate significant returns for both the state and the nation, ultimately benefiting the people as a whole. "I propose the establishment of the centre of excellence focusing on advanced material processing, rare earth element metallurgy, and zero-waste recovery to further drive the industry's growth in our country."

Probe of Pamela Ling's abduction still ongoing, Saifuddin tells Dewan Rakyat
KUALA LUMPUR: Police are still investigating the disappearance of Datin Seri Pamela Ling Yueh under Section 365 of the Penal Code for kidnapping with intent to wrongfully confine, the Dewan Rakyat was told. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the investigation paper is being processed and several documents are being finalised by the investigating officer before being submitted to the deputy public prosecutor for further instructions. "The Home Ministry would like to clarify that the police remain committed to investigating any reported cases of abduction or disappearance following standard operating procedures and existing legal provisions," he told Ram Karpal Singh (PH-Bukit Gelugor), who asked the ministry to reveal the status of the investigation. Ram Karpal also wanted to know whether or not the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is being investigated in connection with the case, considering that Ling was reportedly abducted on her way to the commission's office on April 9. Saifuddin said the police would cooperate with other enforcement agencies, including the MACC, in conducting investigations when required. On the day of her disappearance, Ling was on her way to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya to assist an investigation under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. However, she reportedly went missing on the way to the appointment. Her lawyer lodged a police report the same day. CCTV footage showed her being abducted by several men. So far, no ransom demand has been received.

Malaysia records RM3.29bil approved investments in AI for January-June
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has successfully drawn approved investments totalling RM3.29 billion for the artificial intelligence (AI) sector under the Digital Malaysia initiative for the period from January to June this year, with the potential to create approximately 6,920 job opportunities. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the achievement showed investor confidence in Malaysia's potential as a regional AI hub, thus strengthening the country's position in the global digital ecosystem. He said the contribution of AI and technology to the country's gross domestic product in 2023 was 23.5 per cent, and the government targeted the contribution to grow to 25.5 per cent by the end of 2025. "I am confident that this target can be achieved based on positive developments in investments, talent development and the implementation of various AI use cases across sectors," he said. He was replying to a question from Datuk Wira Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN-Kubang Pasu) on the progress achieved by the National AI Office so far and what its contribution is to the development of AI. This achievement is in line with the government's efforts to develop the National AI Action Plan 2026-2030, based on data, talent, and infrastructure, to ensure that the benefits of technology can be maximised for the economy and the rakyat.
