Malaysia records RM3.29bil approved investments in AI for January-June

New Straits Times14 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has successfully drawn approved investments totalling RM3.29 billion for the artificial intelligence (AI) sector under the Digital Malaysia initiative for the period from January to June this year, with the potential to create approximately 6,920 job opportunities.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the achievement showed investor confidence in Malaysia's potential as a regional AI hub, thus strengthening the country's position in the global digital ecosystem.
He said the contribution of AI and technology to the country's gross domestic product in 2023 was 23.5 per cent, and the government targeted the contribution to grow to 25.5 per cent by the end of 2025.
"I am confident that this target can be achieved based on positive developments in investments, talent development and the implementation of various AI use cases across sectors," he said.
He was replying to a question from Datuk Wira Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN-Kubang Pasu) on the progress achieved by the National AI Office so far and what its contribution is to the development of AI.
This achievement is in line with the government's efforts to develop the National AI Action Plan 2026-2030, based on data, talent, and infrastructure, to ensure that the benefits of technology can be maximised for the economy and the rakyat.

NST Leader: Desecration of Jalur Gemilang

To fly the Jalur Gemilang upside down is an insult to the dignity of our beloved nation, but a hardware store owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, has done exactly that. And to do that just weeks before the country celebrates its National Day is like stabbing the very heart of the nation. Insult a man's dignity, he may forgive you. But insult the dignity of the nation, which the Jalur Gemilang is a symbol of, he will neither forgive you nor forget the disrespectful act. So will not the nation. The proof of this is the numerous police reports lodged around the country by loyal Malaysians and statements issued by national leaders. Disturbed as he was, National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang took to X, urging the police to take firm action against the offender, stressing the need for the action to serve as a lesson to all. Flying the flag correctly is every citizen's responsibility as a sign of respect and love for the country, Bernama quoted him as saying. He is right. To fly the Jalur Gemilang incorrectly is to seek to blemish the sovereignty, dignity and unity of the nation. Such an abhorrent act mustn't be tolerated. Strongly worded condemnation was also issued by Penang PKR Youth chief Muhammad Zakwan Mustafa Kamal in a statement on Saturday. He said the act of flying the Jalur Gemilang upside down was disrespectful, irresponsible, and an insult to the dignity of the nation. He said if the act was proven to be deliberate, no compromise should be shown. We say the same, too. Zakwan also called on the hardware store owner to issue a public apology to all Malaysians. As this Leader goes to press, no such apology has been issued. The police are saying that there is a case for prosecution. The hardware shop owner, who was detained on Sunday and released on police bail later, is being investigated under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. If there is a case for prosecution, it is high time the authorities bring to bear the full brunt of the law on him to show how serious an insult to the dignity of the nation is. There have been far too many cases in the past, many of the culprits feigning ignorance. Utter incredulity must be the response. Even in the past, it wasn't the act of one who hadn't come of age. Or the act of one who suffered from some disease of the mind. Though the past acts showed clear disrespect for the dignity of the nation, we chose to adopt a softly, softly approach. The Kepala Batas incident proves to the authorities that such an approach was wrong. Nay it might have even encouraged it. If what the police investigation is saying is right, then the full brunt of the law must be brought to bear on him. Even ordinary crime demands punishment. Insulting the symbol of the dignity of a nation is no ordinary crime. As severe as it is, so must the punishment be.

Malaysia showcases digital innovation at Expo 2025 Osaka

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia is committed to building an innovation-driven digital future that is inclusive and sustainable, said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo. He emphasised that Expo 2025 Osaka serves as a strategic platform to strengthen ties between Malaysia and Japan in shaping a collective digital economy. Gobind made these remarks during the launch of Digital Ministry Week at the Malaysia Pavilion, held from Aug 11 to 15. The event, themed 'Weaving a Future in Harmony,' was officiated virtually by the minister. The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) is leading the country's participation to showcase strengths in creative technology sectors like animation, gaming, and immersive tech. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Unbound and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia to boost digital literacy and youth development through AI and gamified learning. The initiative includes policy research and AI ethics, supported by the Securities Commission and Ministry of Finance. Fourteen local digital companies will exhibit their innovations through interactive activities, including game demos and virtual reality experiences. Visitors can also try the locally developed game 'No Straight Roads,' now being expanded through a partnership with Japan's Shueisha Games. This collaboration highlights Malaysia's potential in producing globally competitive creative content. Expo 2025 Osaka provides Malaysia an international stage to promote its digital ecosystem and attract investments. The country aims to position itself as Southeast Asia's leading digital hub through strategic partnerships. The Malaysia Pavilion, open until Oct 13, 2025, targets RM13 billion in investments with participation from 21 ministries and 70 agencies. This effort reinforces Malaysia's ambition to strengthen its global economic and technological presence. - Bernama

AI sector drew RM3.2bil in investments in first half of 2025 [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's artificial intelligence (AI) sector has attracted RM3.29 billion in approved investments in the first half of 2025. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the investments could potentially create 6,920 jobs under the Malaysia Digital initiative. He told the Dewan Rakyat that these investments mark progress by the National AI Office (NAIO) in developing the country's AI ecosystem. Gobind said this in response to a question from Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN-Kubang Pasu) on the progress of the NAIO. Meanwhile, Gobind also said that the Asean Digital Summit 2025 will be held from Aug 11 to 13, as part of efforts to strengthen Malaysia's position in the regional digital landscape. On cross-sectoral collaboration, Gobind said an AI impact study on the public sector involving 28 ministries is in its final phase, with 55 use cases identified. "These include AI-powered traffic forecasting, smart port management, radiology and hospital resource management, digitisation of medical records, agricultural supply-demand forecasting, pest detection systems, and workforce upskilling programmes," he said. He added that an "AI at Work" programme will also be used to enhance public sector operations. "This is important to realise our national transformation from social, economic and governance perspectives," he said.
