The BS stage VI buses will replace ageing fleets connecting Central and Chathiram bus terminuses.
Initially, the buses were planned to be operated once the Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) at Panjapur becomes operational. However, as the opening of the terminus has been postponed to June-end, the buses were launched from the Central bus stand. Talking to reporters after the event, the minister said vacant shops at the Chathiram bus terminus will be allocated to traders soon.
On desilting waterbodies, the minister said, "Ahead of opening of the Mettur dam, the desilting work in canals and channels has been expedited as per the instructions of the chief minister. Other waterbodies are also being desilted as a part of preparatory measures before the monsoon to prevent inundations. Around 80 crore have been sanctioned for the work."
TNSTC sources said the Kumbakonam division was allocated 173 new buses, of which 110 buses including 50 city buses and 60 mofussil buses, were commissioned. The remaining buses — 26 city buses and 37 mofussil buses — will be launched in a phased manner. About 30 low-floor buses are likely to be allocated for operations in Trichy and Thanjavur, sources added.

Nearly 5 lakh board buses from Chennai ahead of I-Day; 18 omnibuses fined
CHENNAI: More than five lakh people travelled from Chennai to various parts of Tamil Nadu on government buses between Wednesday and Friday, ahead of the weekend and extended holidays. According to officials from the state transport department, between Wednesday and 3 am on Friday, 3.13 lakh commuters travelled from Chennai on 5,780 buses, including 1,596 special services. 'On Friday alone, around 1.6 lakh people travelled from KCBT, Madhavaram, and CMBT,' said an official. To meet the surge in demand for destinations such as Tiruvannamalai, Tindivanam, Cuddalore, and other northern districts, the Villupuram division of TNSTC hired private buses. 'These buses, operated from KCBT, were deployed to handle high-traffic routes. Based on reservation patterns, private operators were kept on standby and ran services at government fares,' the official added. Major routes, including GST Road, Chennai Bypass, ECR, and OMR, saw heavy congestion from Thursday, with vehicle queues stretching up to two kilometres on GST Road during peak hours in both directions. Meanwhile, omni buses ferried around 1.3 lakh commuters on Thursday and Friday. With demand soaring, ticket prices on several routes including Chennai - Madurai, Chennai - Coimbatore and others touched Rs 4,000. Following passenger complaints, Meenambakkam RTO officials inspected omni buses at Kilambakkam, imposing fines totalling Rs 1.26 lakh on 18 vehicles for violations such as expired insurance, unauthorised luggage transport, lack of pollution certificates, and permit breaches. Excess fares collected from passengers were retrieved from the operators and refunded on the spot.

Private buses flout rules near Trichy Central bus terminus
Trichy: Services to Central bus terminus in Trichy may have took a dip after Panjapur KKBT was opened, but private city buses continue to flout rules in the vicinity. Private buses, instead of following the designated route, are spotted taking risky U-turns putting fellow commuters including pedestrians in danger. After the state highways department closed access to the service road of Trichy junction RoB last week to take up civil work, buses commuting from Trichy Junction railway station to Central bus stand were diverted via Dindigul Road. Buses should use the Ambedkar statue roundabout beneath the elevated rotary of Trichy junction RoB (Aristo circle) to reach the terminus. However, multiple private buses are skipping the roundabout and take a risky U-turn on service roads very close to the pillars of the RoB. "Pedestrians and riders on the service roads are completely caught by surprise as buses make a sudden turn very close to the pillars. Their manoeuvres are a threat to other vehicles accessing the area. In peak hours, school and college buses are caught in the bottleneck," C Balasubramanian, former road safety council member, said. While TNSTC buses are following the change, private bus drivers are taking risky detours to cut short their journey time, locals alleged. City traffic police said police personnel will be deployed below the elevated rotary to regulate private buses. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Seven low-floor buses rolled out in Trichy
Trichy: The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), Trichy region, on Sunday commissioned seven Ultra-Low Entry (ULE) buses, all originating from the KKBT terminus in Panjapur and connecting three destinations via five city routes. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Of the 25 low-floor buses allocated to Trichy, seven are now in service, three more will be commissioned within a week, and the remaining 15—currently under production—are expected to join the fleet in a month. A TNSTC official said trial runs on all ULE routes had been completed, along with road and bus stand modifications. "If overloading issues arise, we will analyse and address them to sustain operations," the official said. Four of the new buses connect Panjapur with Chathiram bus terminus—two via Woraiyur, one via Palakkarai, and one via Thillai Nagar. Two buses run between Panjapur and Samayapuram Mariamman temple via Trichy–Chennai NH (Palpannai and No 1 Tollgate), catering to pilgrims from other districts. One bus links Panjapur and Srirangam via Thillai Nagar. In total, the seven buses will make 104 trips daily, 60 to Chathiram, 28 to Samayapuram, and 16 to Srirangam. Passengers, especially senior citizens, welcomed the low-floor design, saying it made boarding with luggage easier. "Other buses have steep footboards. Though fares may be higher, those who spend more on autorickshaws may now opt for ULEs," said passenger Puthanampatti N Saravanan. TNSTC also launched four other services on Sunday, three mofussil buses from KKBT to Kodaikanal via Dindigul, and a city bus from Panjapur to Samayapuram via No 1 Tollgate.
