Bodies of two women recovered after car plunges off cliff in KZN
Search and rescue officials have found the wreckage of a car that plunged down a cliff in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), claiming the lives of two women.
It is not clear what caused the vehicle to reverse and inadvertently fall off a cliff in KwaSwayimane on Saturday.
Tragedy
KZN Department of Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said they are saddened by the tragic accident.
'I sent a team from my office to visit the Shabalala and Madlala families in Ward 3, KwaSwayimane, outside Pietermaritzburg. We are saddened by the death of Mama Shabalala and Ms Madlala, a Grade 12 pupil. Both were in the car.

'Mama Shabalala, a single parent, received this car last year as a gift from her children. Sadly, she left us on Women's Day,' Duma said.
Recovery
Duma also thanked a local teacher who alerted Traffic Ambassador Ayanda Msweli about the accident.
'We acted immediately by calling for the helicopter rescue team and reinforcement. The Helicopter Rescue Team worked under very difficult conditions to retrieve their bodies from the wreckage located more than 800 meters down the cliff.
'We thank Rev Xaba and our Ambassador, Pastor Vidima, for being closer to the family. I have mandated my office to arrange social workers to provide professional counselling services to the families,' Duma said.
Limpopo bus crash
Meanwhile, four women were also killed on Women's Day in a tragic bus accident in Limpopo.
The accident occurred late on Saturday evening, 09 August 2025, on the R81 road in Sekgopo, Mopani District.
Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene said they are deeply saddened by the deaths of the women.
'Preliminary reports indicate that the driver lost control of the bus, which subsequently overturned. Sadly, four women were declared deceased at the scene. Eight passengers sustained serious to moderate injuries, while 45 others, including the bus driver, suffered minor injuries.'
Hospital
Chuene said all injured passengers were swiftly transported to Kgapane Hospital, Mankweng Hospital, and Van Velden Hospital for urgent medical care.
The exact cause of the accident is currently under investigation.

5 dead in head-on collision on N2 in KZN
The death toll from the horrific head-on collision between a sugar truck and a light motor vehicle on the N2 on Saturday morning has risen to five. The crash, which occurred between Amatigulu and Dokodweni, claimed five lives after emergency personnel revised the scene, The Witness reports. He also urged community members, who had gathered at the crash site with buckets, waiting to loot the sugar, to leave the area immediately, warning that the diesel leak from the overturned truck poses an explosion risk. Sandton CPF celebrates women and community safety
Chilli Lane Shopping Centre in Sunninghill was alive with conversation, flowers, and a spirit of unity as the Sandton Community Policing Forum (CPF) Sector 1 hosted its Women's Day celebration. The event combined tribute, awareness, and community engagement, recognising the vital role women play in society, while strengthening ties between residents and law enforcement. Residents were encouraged to voice concerns, ask questions, and learn more about resources available to them. Roshan Byjnal, public relations officer for Sandton CPF, said the celebration was about more than honouring women. 'Women have gone beyond being a moms, wives, and businesswomen. Women are now leaders in every aspect of the community, but it's also about raising awareness on gender-based violence is a major challenge. We want every woman to know she is not alone. Horrific collision on KZN north coast claims four lives
Four people were killed in a collision on the N2 between Dokodweni and Amatigulu on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast on Saturday. Department of transport and human settlements spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said the accident at about 8:30am involved a light motor vehicle and a truck. Transport and human settlements MEC Siboniso Duma was expecting to get an update from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) on the crash, which claimed the lives of three males and one female, and had sent condolences to the affected families, he said. Sibiya said the accident happened shortly after the MEC issued a statement about a successful multidisciplinary force roadblock which had led to the arrest of scores of motorists for drunk driving, being in possession of stolen vehicles, drugs and other offences. 'The MEC has urged we intensify the no-nonsense Alufakwa and Zero Tolerance approach through the province to save lives and ensure visibility of the Road Traffic Inspectorate, and also sustain the road safety campaign until the end of the year and beyond,' he said.
