Horrific collision on KZN north coast claims four lives
Department of transport and human settlements spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said the accident at about 8:30am involved a light motor vehicle and a truck.
Transport and human settlements MEC Siboniso Duma was expecting to get an update from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) on the crash, which claimed the lives of three males and one female, and had sent condolences to the affected families, he said.
Sibiya said the accident happened shortly after the MEC issued a statement about a successful multidisciplinary force roadblock which had led to the arrest of scores of motorists for drunk driving, being in possession of stolen vehicles, drugs and other offences.
'The MEC has urged we intensify the no-nonsense Alufakwa and Zero Tolerance approach through the province to save lives and ensure visibility of the Road Traffic Inspectorate, and also sustain the road safety campaign until the end of the year and beyond,' he said.

77 motorists arrested for drunk driving in KZN over weekend
The department has identified young people as particularly vulnerable to road accidents. KwaZulu-Natal's Road Traffic Inspectorate arrested 77 motorists for driving under the influence during a weekend operation following a directive from MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma. The arrests occurred between the evening of 15 August and the early hours of 16 August 2025. The operation formed part of the department's Zero Tolerance, No Nonsense and Alufakwa campaigns targeting intoxicated drivers across the province. Drunk driving weekend operation results According to the MEC, the RTI team, led by a female commander and comprising mainly female law enforcement officers, stopped 251 vehicles during the operation. In addition to the DUI arrests, officers discovered 11 motorists driving without valid licenses and removed two vehicles from the roads that 'resembled moving coffins' due to their poor condition. The arrests were spread across five major centres in the province. Duma revealed that Durban recorded the highest number with 29 arrests, followed by Pietermaritzburg with 17, Kokstad with 12, Empangeni with 11, and Ladysmith with 5. The operation received support from the South African Police Service, Durban Metro Police, Umsunduzi Traffic, and traffic officers from various municipalities across KwaZulu-Natal. 'I mandated the team to arrest intoxicated drivers and ensure that they sober up in cells during the greater part of the weekend,' said Duma. The MEC emphasised the department's commitment to removing dangerous drivers from provincial roads. 'Our campaign against drunken driving is now in full swing, and we will only rest once all irresponsible motorists are removed from our roads,' he added. This figure underscores the significance of the department's crackdown on drunk driving. The MEC noted that winter months present particular challenges for road safety. 'Critically, we reported in June that the winter period is characterised by increased night travel involving young people, especially over weekends,' Duma explained. According to Duma, car accidents become more frequent during winter months due to longer nights and reduced visibility, factors that compound the risks associated with impaired driving. Youth road safety crisis The department has identified young people as particularly vulnerable to road accidents. 'We were informed by the Road Accident Fund that the agency paid out R43 billion for injury benefits to young accident survivors aged between 15 and 34,' Duma shared. This is for the period between 2020 and 2022, and the amount represents 44% of all claims and averages R14 billion annually. According to the MEC, the agency also disbursed R2.86 billion in death-related benefits for young victims during the same period. MEC Macie demands 'eye-for-an-eye' justice for cop killers

These were the words of Mpumalanga MEC for community safety, security and liaison Jackie Macie during the funeral of police officer Sgt Lawrence Dumisani Mtshweni, who was shot while responding to a robbery last week. He died in hospital hours later. Two men have since been arrested for his murder, while two others were shot dead by police in Eswatini last week. Another suspect shot himself in the head before the police could arrest him. At the service held at Schoemansdal community hall on Saturday, Macie said: 'There's no hippo's calf that can be devoured by crocodiles and the river settles,' Macie said. 'Let me address comrade Lawrence Dumisani Mtshweni. Thanks, Mtshweni, that you died with your boots on and fought to the end. Sgt Mtshweni died when he was trying to protect the citizens and property of South Africans. 'When we understand the events [leading up] to [his murder], we know that some of the suspects we arrested were released, and they [the suspects] felt that they were in charge. 'The battalion in blue arrests people, but you [the courts] release them. But we are not complaining about the Tonga police station or the court. I'm telling you today, it's not going to happen as long as I'm an MEC. 'I don't believe in the New Testament. When you kill an officer, what are you telling us is [that] if you kill using an axe, then you will face an axe,' Macie said. He called on the community not to hide criminals. 'We want that [criminals must bring themselves to the cops] before we get them because if we get them first, we don't know what shall happen,' he said.

Video: Death toll from N2 in KZN crash rises to 6
The lifeless body of the truck driver involved in a fatal crash on the N2 northbound near Amatikulu River bridge yesterday morning was located by the afternoon, bringing the death toll to six. While the Road Traffic Inspectorate and emergency services were on scene, the body of the driver was found trapped in the truck that was loaded with sugar. The jaws of life were used to extricate the body from the vehicle, Zululand Observer reports. KwaZulu-Natal MEC of Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma has expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims. He said that based on initial reports from RTI, the truck slammed into a light motor vehicle and pushed it to the side of the road.
