PM Narendra Modi's strong message to Pakistan from Red Fort: ‘India will not differentiate…'
Hailing the armed forces on 'Operation Sindoor', Modi said it dealt a severe blow to Pakistan as new details of damages suffered by the country are emerging every day.
Addressing the 79th Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort, Modi once again made it clear that India will not tolerate Pakistan's nuclear blackmail.
"What the Indian armed forces have done during Operation Sindoor was not seen in many many years. We have set a new normal in dealing with cross-border terrorism, he said. I salute our brave soldiers who punished those behind the Pahalgam attack beyond their imagination," he said.

Children ‘perform' national anthem in sign language in Karimnagar
Karimnagar joined the nation in celebrating India's 79th Independence Day in a novel way on Friday. Collector Pamela Satpathy led a group of children with hearing impairment perform national anthem Jana Gana Mana in Indian sign language at the main Independence Day ceremony held at the police parade grounds in Karimnagar. The patriotic-themed event left the audience spellbound, fostering patriotic spirit and spreading the message of national pride and unity. A host of district officials also took part in the event. In an initiative to promote Indian Sign Language (ISL) as a tool for inclusive communication, the district administration recently conducted training sessions in the basics of ISL for district officials. The initiative seeks to help the hearing-impaired persons to effectively access government welfare schemes, avail of the opportunities available to them and enable them reach their full potential. Earlier, IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu hoisted the national flag and felicitated freedom fighters on the occasion.

Figure of speech: on the Prime Minister's Independence Day address
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 12th consecutive Independence Day address from the Red Fort was notable not only for highlighting national security and self-reliance but also for laying stress on a communally coloured demographic threat to the country. While showering praise on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Mr. Modi repeated its refrain by saying that the seeds of a new crisis were being sown. The launch of a High-Powered Demography Mission, to address what he described as 'a deliberate conspiracy' to alter the demography of the country, is little more than a thinly disguised effort to polarise the country on religious lines by pointing to the different rates of growth in population among different communities and to the 'infiltration' of undocumented migrants from the neighbouring countries. However, the speech also dwelt on substantive issues with a considerable focus on self-reliance in all fields including the economy, defence and technology, and youth empowerment. Mr. Modi also presented an account of the developments in India's national security and developmental landscape in the last year, and previewed what to anticipate ahead. Mr. Modi lauded the armed forces for Operation Sindoor, which, he said, showcased the effectiveness of India's defence capabilities and indigenous weaponry. He also used the occasion to warn India's adversaries, particularly Pakistan, underscoring the policy of zero tolerance toward terrorism and cross-border attacks. Recent successes in the combat against the Maoist insurgency also found a mention. As in a plan announced by Mr. Modi, Mission Sudarshan Chakra, a fully indigenous defence system, will be developed and deployed by 2035. The details were scarce, but he described it as 'a powerful weapon system' which 'will not only neutralise the enemy's attack but will also hit back at the enemy many times more'. Speaking amid rapid changes in global power equations, Mr. Modi's Independence Day message was also aimed at the United States, which has announced tariffs as high as 50% on many Indian products. While promising to focus on revving up the domestic economy, Mr. Modi showed an awareness of the challenges that the Indian economy is facing. The next generation GST reforms would be rolled out by Deepavali 2025, which would reduce the tax burden on core goods and services and boost business. On the one hand, Mr. Modi is trying to cultivate his ideological ecosystem while on the other, he is trying to tackle the material challenges facing the nation. The success of one, however, can only come at the cost of the other.

Kishtwar cloudburst: 60 dead; PM Modi vows support; dozens still missing
The death toll from the cloudburst in Kishtwar rose to 60 on Friday, with scores still missing as rescue operations continued for the second consecutive day. Independence Day 2025 Modi signals new push for tech independence with local chips Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave India its own currency Officials said over 100 people were injured, including 38 with serious injuries. More than 160 people have been rescued from the debris, while dozens remain unaccounted for. So far, over 35 bodies have been identified, and the process of identifying the remaining continues. "It felt like the wrath of God. The debris was flowing like a mad dragon out to chew us all. We were extremely lucky to survive," said Sham Lal, a survivor from Jammu. The cloudburst triggered massive landslides and mudslides, burying houses, temples, a bridge, government buildings, and several vehicles. A community kitchen set up for pilgrims, where scores had gathered, along with a nearby security camp, was washed away. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Friday, assuring them of full support. "Spoke to Jammu and Kashmir LG, Shri Manoj Sinha Ji and CM Shri Omar Abdullah Ji regarding the situation in the wake of the cloudburst and flooding in Kishtwar. Authorities are working on the ground to assist those affected," the Prime Minister wrote on X. The cloudburst struck around 12:30 PM on Thursday in the Chisoti area, about 90 km from Kishtwar town - the last motorable village en route to the Machail Mata temple. A large number of pilgrims were in the area for the annual yatra, which began on July 25 and was scheduled to conclude on September 5. The 8.5 km trek to the 9,500-feet-high shrine starts from Chisoti. Many people were also stranded in nearby Hamori village and could not be contacted, as power lines were down and mobile devices had run out of charge. CM Omar Abdullah visited Chisoti on Friday afternoon to take stock of the situation. His cabinet minister, Javed Dar, confirmed that 65 people had been killed so far. Locals claimed to have seen some bodies floating in the Chenab River, but officials have not confirmed those reports. The exact number of casualties, injuries, or missing persons is yet to be finalised as rescue operations continue. Officials warned that the toll may rise as several people are still missing. Rescue efforts by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, army, paramilitary forces, and volunteer groups are ongoing. Chopper deployment has been hindered due to poor weather conditions. The Jammu-based White Knight Corps of the Indian Army stated that additional rescue and medical teams have been deployed and are working around the clock. "Teams on the ground are prioritising saving lives and providing assistance to those in need in close coordination with other agencies," the army said. Volunteer teams from humanitarian organisations, including Ababeel, with nine ambulances, and Hilal Volunteers, are also on the ground, helping in rescue efforts and transporting the injured to hospitals in Kishtwar, Udhampur, and Jammu. "Rescue operation is going on, but the debris is too heavy and difficult to remove. We have shifted several critically injured people to hospital," said Shagun Parihar, BJP legislator from Kishtwar, speaking to ET. BJP leaders, led by party president Sat Sharma, also visited the affected area.
