New Rotherham park and ride site opens
A new park and ride site for tram train passengers has opened next to Rotherham's Parkgate Shopping Centre.The free 289-space car park is part of a £12.9m project to improve transport connections across South Yorkshire.Money for the site, which includes 14 EV chargers, cycle racks, disabled access spaces, and parking for solo motorcycles, has come from the government's £166m Transforming Cities Fund.Chris Read, leader of Rotherham Council, said: "The new Park and Ride is a real win for Rotherham – it's about making everyday journeys easier, greener and more accessible for local people.
"Whether you're hopping on the Tram Train, cycling to the shops, or charging an EV, this investment helps us cut congestion, reduce emissions, and build a better-connected future for our town," he added.The money was also used to build a new link road to make it easier for people to reach the shopping park and reduce traffic congestion on the A633 and A6123.
South Yorkshire's Mayor Oliver Coppard said: "South Yorkshire deserves nothing less than a world-class public transport network so our communities can access the jobs and opportunities they deserve; and that we can all stay near and go far."Mark Kanaris, senior operations manager for Parkgate Shopping Park, added: "This investment will have a daily impact, benefitting the hundreds of people who work here and the thousands of visitors who enjoy our big name stores and restaurants each week."

A BEEFY super saloon that once belonged to Noel Gallagher has recently hit the market - for a supersonic sum of £1.2million. A gorgeous Bentley Turbo R was listed on Auto Trader, having once been the pride of joy of the Don't Look Back in Anger singer. 3 3 3 The four-door saloon, which was first registered in 1997, was owned by Gallagher despite the fact he couldn't drive it. The Turbo R - with the 'R" standing for "roadholding" - boasts a 6.8-litre V8 engine and is good for 0-60mph under seven seconds, as well as a top speed of 143mph. Not only built for speed, the Bentley boasts all the trimmings you'd expect from a luxury set of wheels of its time - featuring a cream leather interior, complemented by a wood trim. Described as being in both "excellent condition" and "surprisingly reliable", the Turbo R has clocked some 100,000 miles in its 28-year life. The snazzy motor also has the number plate 'OASI6 2', in reference to the Britpop band, which is set to reunite to play a run of gigs this year in the UK and Ireland. This includes shows at Manchester's Heaton Park, London's Wembley Stadium, and Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium, throughout July, August and September. The reunion made history, with more than 10million fans trying to get their hands on the British shows alone. Every performance, including those in the US, South America and Australia, sold out within minutes of going on sale. Famously, the Manchester-born musician has never passed his driving test - but seemingly hasn't stopped him owning or, indeed, driving cars. In 2023, he was handed six penalty points and ordered to pay a court £1,000 for failing to tell police who was driving his Range Rover - which was clocked speeding at 41mph on a 30mph stretch of the A40 in Edgware Road, West London. Speaking about the Bentley's sale, Erin Baker, editorial director at Auto Trader, said: 'Cars listed by music legends don't come around very often, and Noel Gallagher's Bentley Turbo R is certainly one for the Auto Trader history books." Warning airport staff strike could ‘ground planes and passengers'
Over 800 workers across five companies at Glasgow Airport may strike due to pay disputes, potentially disrupting summer travel. Unite the union will ballot staff at Glasgow Airport Ltd, ICTS Central Search, Swissport, Menzies Aviation, and Falck for industrial action if disputes aren't resolved in two weeks. Swissport workers are in dispute over rotas and work-life balance, while ICTS Central Search workers are protesting under-staffing, working conditions, and pay. Workers employed by Glasgow Airport Limited and Falck firefighters rejected a 3.6% pay increase, and Menzies Aviation workers turned down a 4.25% uplift. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham stated the companies can afford better pay and conditions, accusing them of prioritising profits over fair wages.
