Beach season in Ottawa will not be extended to Labour Day: City

The 2025 budget included funding to extend the beach season beyond Sunday if enough staff was available. In a memo to city councillors sent on Monday, general manager of Recreation, Cultural and Facilities Services Dan Chenier said despite attempts to keep beaches open, there were not enough available lifeguards. 'Unfortunately, after exploring several options, including a shortened or modified daily schedule and a reduced number of beach sites, staff are not able to retain a sufficient number of certified waterfront lifeguards to extend the season at any of the locations,' Chenier wrote. The city must have between 55 and 60 lifeguards available to properly supervise Ottawa's beaches, Chenier says. Summer lifeguards were unable to extend their employment, Chenier said, due to the early return of classes at French school boards and the early Labour Day long weekend. Beaches will have signage to inform residents that there is no supervision after the beach season officially ends on Aug. 24. 'Appreciating that residents may still choose to go to the beach beyond the supervision season and into September, we will maintain measures at each site to promote safety around the unsupervised waterfront,' said Chenier. Beach pavilion washrooms at Mooney's, Britannia and Petrie Island will remain open until Sept. 1, operating Monday to Thursday 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday to Sunday 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Porta-potties will remain at these locations until October. Westboro Beach Pavilion and washrooms will be opened, closed and maintained by the National Capital Commission (NCC). Extended service at outdoor pools Some outdoor pools will have extended service into September, Chenier said. 'With the support of the additional 2025 budget funding for an extended aquatic season, Bearbrook, Crestview and Glen Cairn outdoor pools were selected to remain open until Sept. 14, with modified hours,' he wrote. The General Burns pool, which has been closed for several weeks for repairs, is expected to reopen on Sept. 9 for an extended season until Oct. 3. The Beaverbrook, Corkstown, and Katimavik pools will close Aug. 24, and the Entrance pool on Eaton Street will close Sept. 9. Wading pools that opened on June 23 closed on Sunday. The wading pools that remain open will be closed on Aug. 24. Splash pads are open until Sept. 14, and the season could be extended if hot weather persists.

Sault firefighter sent to hospital after industrial blaze

Marie on Friday afternoon, with officials confirming the blaze was caused by mechanical failure. The Sault Ste. Marie Fire Service was called to the 500 block of Wallace Terrace shortly after 4 p.m. on August 15, where crews contained and extinguished the fire at an industrial occupancy. 'The cause of the fire was determined to be a mechanical failure,' said Aaron Gravelle, the city's public education officer, in a news release Monday. No injuries were reported among the public or staff. 'One firefighter was taken to hospital for precautionary reasons,' Gravelle said. Authorities did not provide further details about the extent of the damage or the specific industrial business affected.

Fire breaks out at condos under construction in Hawkesbury, Ont.

A fire broke out at a condo development under construction on Nelson Street East at around 10 a.m. Monday, an OPP spokesperson said. Police were sent to the scene to assist firefighters and closed streets in the area, including Nelson Street East, Higginson Street, and Regent Street at William Street. Homes in the immediate area were evacuated as a precaution, police said, and victims' services on scene for them. Police said workers were working at the construction site when the fire broke out. No one has been reported hurt. OPP said two buildings were destroyed by the fire.
