Recognise pourakarmikas like Class I, II officers, says Aravinda Malagatti
Speaking at the inauguration of a painting exhibition on freedom fighters by artist UG Mohankumar Aradhya, Malagatti said pourakarmikas deserve recognition on par with Class I and Class II officers. The event, held at Kalamandira Suchitra Art Gallery, was organised in collaboration with Kannada Sahitya Kala Koota and Karnataka State Backward Classes Awareness Forum, as part of the Independence Day celebrations.
Malagatti urged the state and central govts to treat pourakarmikas with dignity. "Even if they cannot be paid on par with Class I employees, they should at least receive salaries on par with Class II employees," he said.
He noted that although the department of Kannada and culture published three volumes on freedom fighters, many unsung heroes — both from the pre-and post-Independence periods — were overlooked. "There is a need for further research to bring their stories to light," he said.
"Many participated in the freedom struggle, with some even engaging in battles against the British, while others contributed in some other ways, such as disrupting the British communication lines by cutting telephone wires," he said. He suggested that uncovering and documenting these small stories would ensure their place in history.
Legislative council member D Thimmaiah stated that freedom fighters should be remembered year-round, not just during Independence Day.
"We are free today as a result of the independence they brought us," he said.
Mysuru City Corporation deputy commissioner GS Somashekar presided over the event. Kannada Sahitya Kala Koota president M Chandrashekhar and Karnataka State Backward Classes Awareness Forum president KS Shivaramu and others were present.

Children ‘perform' national anthem in sign language in Karimnagar
Karimnagar joined the nation in celebrating India's 79th Independence Day in a novel way on Friday. Collector Pamela Satpathy led a group of children with hearing impairment perform national anthem Jana Gana Mana in Indian sign language at the main Independence Day ceremony held at the police parade grounds in Karimnagar. The patriotic-themed event left the audience spellbound, fostering patriotic spirit and spreading the message of national pride and unity. A host of district officials also took part in the event. In an initiative to promote Indian Sign Language (ISL) as a tool for inclusive communication, the district administration recently conducted training sessions in the basics of ISL for district officials. The initiative seeks to help the hearing-impaired persons to effectively access government welfare schemes, avail of the opportunities available to them and enable them reach their full potential. Earlier, IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu hoisted the national flag and felicitated freedom fighters on the occasion.

Figure of speech: on the Prime Minister's Independence Day address
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 12th consecutive Independence Day address from the Red Fort was notable not only for highlighting national security and self-reliance but also for laying stress on a communally coloured demographic threat to the country. While showering praise on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Mr. Modi repeated its refrain by saying that the seeds of a new crisis were being sown. The launch of a High-Powered Demography Mission, to address what he described as 'a deliberate conspiracy' to alter the demography of the country, is little more than a thinly disguised effort to polarise the country on religious lines by pointing to the different rates of growth in population among different communities and to the 'infiltration' of undocumented migrants from the neighbouring countries. However, the speech also dwelt on substantive issues with a considerable focus on self-reliance in all fields including the economy, defence and technology, and youth empowerment. Mr. Modi also presented an account of the developments in India's national security and developmental landscape in the last year, and previewed what to anticipate ahead. Mr. Modi lauded the armed forces for Operation Sindoor, which, he said, showcased the effectiveness of India's defence capabilities and indigenous weaponry. He also used the occasion to warn India's adversaries, particularly Pakistan, underscoring the policy of zero tolerance toward terrorism and cross-border attacks. Recent successes in the combat against the Maoist insurgency also found a mention. As in a plan announced by Mr. Modi, Mission Sudarshan Chakra, a fully indigenous defence system, will be developed and deployed by 2035. The details were scarce, but he described it as 'a powerful weapon system' which 'will not only neutralise the enemy's attack but will also hit back at the enemy many times more'. Speaking amid rapid changes in global power equations, Mr. Modi's Independence Day message was also aimed at the United States, which has announced tariffs as high as 50% on many Indian products. While promising to focus on revving up the domestic economy, Mr. Modi showed an awareness of the challenges that the Indian economy is facing. The next generation GST reforms would be rolled out by Deepavali 2025, which would reduce the tax burden on core goods and services and boost business. On the one hand, Mr. Modi is trying to cultivate his ideological ecosystem while on the other, he is trying to tackle the material challenges facing the nation. The success of one, however, can only come at the cost of the other.
