Recognise pourakarmikas like Class I, II officers, says Aravinda Malagatti
Mysuru: Former Karnataka Sahitya Academy chairman and noted writer Aravinda Malagatti on Sunday called for greater recognition for pourakarmikas, stating that symbolic gestures like foot-washing ceremonies (pada puja) are not enough. Speaking at the inauguration of a painting exhibition on freedom fighters by artist UG Mohankumar Aradhya, Malagatti said pourakarmikas deserve recognition on par with Class I and Class II officers. The event, held at Kalamandira Suchitra Art Gallery, was organised in collaboration with Kannada Sahitya Kala Koota and Karnataka State Backward Classes Awareness Forum, as part of the Independence Day celebrations. Malagatti urged the state and central govts to treat pourakarmikas with dignity. "Even if they cannot be paid on par with Class I employees, they should at least receive salaries on par with Class II employees," he said. He noted that although the department of Kannada and culture published three volumes on freedom fighters, many unsung heroes — both from the pre-and post-Independence periods — were overlooked. "There is a need for further research to bring their stories to light," he said. "Many participated in the freedom struggle, with some even engaging in battles against the British, while others contributed in some other ways, such as disrupting the British communication lines by cutting telephone wires," he said. He suggested that uncovering and documenting these small stories would ensure their place in history. Legislative council member D Thimmaiah stated that freedom fighters should be remembered year-round, not just during Independence Day. "We are free today as a result of the independence they brought us," he said. Mysuru City Corporation deputy commissioner GS Somashekar presided over the event. Kannada Sahitya Kala Koota president M Chandrashekhar and Karnataka State Backward Classes Awareness Forum president KS Shivaramu and others were present. Karnataka forum urges govt to regularise national health mission staff
File photo used for representational purpose. MYSURU: Karnataka State Backward Classes Awareness Forum State President K.S. Shivaram urged the health minister, Dinesh Gundu Rao , to support the staff working under the National Health Mission ( NHM ) rather than demanding their resignation. Shivaram told reporters on Friday that around 30,000 employees worked for the past 16-17 years under the NHM and served selflessly, especially during the COVID-19 crisis. However, now the workers were asked to resign, he said. Contract employees in the health department risked their lives in service, and now the minister intends to remove them. The staff members worked for low salaries and without any benefits, he said. With 38,000 vacant posts in the state and 30,000 currently working under NHM, a policy should be introduced to regularise them in phases and fill the remaining 10,000 vacancies, he demanded. Shivaram also demanded the finalisation of inter-district transfer files, implementation of health insurance, ensuring equal pay for equal work, and forming a wage commission. Congress promised in its election manifesto to regularise health department workers. The minister must take note of this, and the chief minister and deputy chief minister must intervene to fulfil the demands, he said.

OBC forum urges Rahul Gandhi to support caste census report
Mysuru: The Karnataka State Backward Classes Awareness Forum on Tuesday initiated a postal campaign requesting Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, to address concerns regarding certain Congress MLAs who opposed the socio-educational report, commonly known as the caste census. The forum members sent letters to Rahul requesting his intervention in implementing the report. "For the first time in Karnataka, a comprehensive social, economic, educational, and political survey of all communities was conducted through the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes when Siddaramaiah was the CM for the first time in 2013. The primary objective of this survey was to understand the socio-economic and educational conditions of all communities, including the oppressed, with statistical data and to ensure social justice for these sections. This survey was conducted scientifically with a cost of approximately Rs180 crore. But now a few Congress MLAs are opposing it without any valid reasons," they alleged. "The report has now been presented and discussed in the cabinet meeting. However, it is deeply saddening that senior Congress MLAs such as Shamanur Shivashankarappa and a few others are opposing this report. Moreover, these MLAs and some leaders have made extremely derogatory statements about the report and the AHINDA communities (minorities, backward classes, and Dalits). They are demanding that the report be discarded entirely, which has caused great distress among all AHINDA sections," said forum president KS Shivaram. "The report consolidates statistical data not only on population but also on social, economic, and educational status of AHINDA communities. It has recommended reservation categorisation and an increase in reservation for various sections. Based on the statistics in this report, the govt will be able to provide political, social, and educational representation to AHINDA communities. However, it is truly unfortunate that some Congress MLAs themselves are opposing this," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Google Brain Co-Founder Andrew Ng, Recommends: Read These 5 Books And Turn Your Life Around Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo The forum requests Rahul's immediate intervention to instruct Congress MLAs to avoid creating unnecessary confusion regarding the report.
